So far I have removed the axle by unbolting it from the differential via the six hex bolts and have rebuilt the axle, now I want to replace the seal.

I drained mine prior to replacing the seals, so I can't say for sure if you're going to lose fluid when you remove it and require a refill - but if its been leaking you might as well plan on refilling it to be sure its topped off.

I think with this method you put a couple blocks of wood on the inside so the bolts have something to push against (other than your diff casing) - then go back and forth tightening two bolts opposite each other to keep the pressure in the direction that you want it.

I tried using a prybar as well as attaching a rope to pull but it would not budge, so I decided to leave it.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I'm in the middle of rebuilding the passenger front CV joint on my 2001 C4 because of a torn outer CV boot. While I'm in there I thought it would be a good idea to replace the seal between the axle and the front differential. So far I have removed the axle by unbolting it from the differential via the six hex bolts and have rebuilt the axle, now I want to replace the seal. The problem is I cannot remove the inner most part of the axle. Is there a trick to this? From what I've read it should just pop off. Any help would be appreciated.
Inner front CV joint
Yeah it just pops out. If I remember correctly I got a breaker part or long screw driver between the differential case and the output shaft and levered them apart. You could also get a slide hammer and give it a good yank. A word of caution - that's a tight space to work in - getting the new seal in there and seated properly could be tricky. I had mine out of the car when I did it.
Dropping it out isn't too terribly difficult so you can always keep that in mind as a backup plan. I drained mine prior to replacing the seals, so I can't say for sure if you're going to lose fluid when you remove it and require a refill - but if its been leaking you might as well plan on refilling it to be sure its topped off.
Cheers
Charlie
This could work as well. I think with this method you put a couple blocks of wood on the inside so the bolts have something to push against (other than your diff casing) - then go back and forth tightening two bolts opposite each other to keep the pressure in the direction that you want it.
edit - I found a thread where I documented the process I went through. Looks like I did a hybrid approach - threaded bolts in and then levered against them.
"For the differential I threaded in the CV boot/cup bolts enough to have something to pry against. It ended up being a quick jerk/hit that pops them out rather than consistent pressure. Overall they really weren't hard to remove. I made a point to mark the left and right shafts - I am not sure if its necessary but it made sense to me as there is a chance they have worn in unison with their bearings or internal gears."
Here is the thread for reference and some pictures:

Thanks for the reply's. I tried using a prybar as well as attaching a rope to pull but it would not budge, so I decided to leave it. Maybe the ring on the end was in the wrong position and hanging down?? I tried turning it but still wouldn't budge. The seal was not leaking but I wanted to replace it while it was apart. I'll try pressing it out with the bolts next time.
Cheers,
Dave
Hey Dave - sorry to hear you weren't able to get it out - but if it wasn't leaking then you saved some time and potentially headache of installing the new seal. Plus now you know the basics for if/when it ever does start to leak. If I remember correctly it took a sharp/quick jolt from the levered prybar to pop them out. I can't remember if I did this with my hands or smacked the end of the bar with a small sledge.
