The PO changed the oil right before I bought the car and even though it's only been a 1000 miles, it's a year later and I wanted to get a baseline started for the car with Blackstone Labs.

In between freaking out, I remembered that the PO had the left valve cover resealed right before my purchase.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The PO changed the oil right before I bought the car and even though it's only been a 1000 miles, it's a year later and I wanted to get a baseline started for the car with Blackstone Labs. The magnetic drain plug looked good but when I cut open the filter... I was seeing some stuff in the pleats that looked like white plastic bits. Of course, I'm thinking water pump impeller, chain guides or worse. I picked out as much of the stuff as I could and was noticing that it was all very soft. In between freaking out, I remembered that the PO had the left valve cover resealed right before my purchase. I checked back underneath the car and saw that a white sealant had been used. I scraped off a sample and it was the same color and consistency as what I pulled from the oil filter. I'm considering it a bullet dodged for now.

POST 2Original post

A little over exuberant with the sealant. What year?

POST 3Original post

stuff will clog tiny oil passages, proceed with extreme caution! .

POST 4Original post

Good catch SoCal! I'd just drop the sump plate (super easy to do) and check the pickup screen and clean if necessary. Use sealant very sparingly when replacing sump plate. It really doesn't take much.

POST 5Original post

If your green cam plugs start blowing out you will know that the excess sealant has clogged the return holes in the head.

POST 6Original post

The guy who did that must put a half a gallon of tooth paste on his tooth brush thinking he'll get a brighter smile.

POST 7Original post

Is that the color of the recommended Drie Bond?, as the Loctite 5900 is dark grey/black. Your supposed to use a 1.5mm bead on the cam cover, looks like they slapped it all over the head first

Again, who ever did this put way to much and I would pull and redo. If you found some in the filter I'd bet there's a lot more...
