Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hopefully you guys can help me narrow down what to look for based on my car's symptom. When the car is warm there is a small chance for it to start and die again instantly. Almost as if I had turned the key on and off again. It has mostly happened when running errands since I will start and stop the engine a few times over a couple of hours. Usually, I can just start the car right after if it dies, but if it dies again I generally need it to let it sit for a while for it to even try starting again (the revs jump up less each time almost as if it is flooded). I just got my car back from my tech after unrelated maintenance, but there were no codes at the time. Here is what I have done to date to try to correct this issue: 1. Cleaned throttle body (I could try this again just in case) 2. New MAF - Cleared MAF code 3. Checked fuel pressure over a long period. Everything looked perfect. What else should be checked or could cause this kind of problem? Starter? Crank position sensor? I am no wrencher, so I will need some guidance on this. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Not the starter since it starts and then dies. Not the CPS because it does start (and then dies). Sounds more fuel related. Check fuel pressure regulator, maybe a leaky (more than one) fuel injector...and even if the fuel pressure is "perfect", it could be a fuel pump on the way out. Last time maintenance was done and what was done? How many miles on the car? Just so we have this straight.....the engine cranks fine, starts and then immediately dies...right? Fuel pressure regulator comes into play because as soon as the engine "runs", vacuum is supplied to the regulator. So it could be stuck or flaky.

Hey DBJoe996! Last maintenance items done were the clutch, flywheel, IMS, RMS and chain tensioners. The car has 69,000 miles and you're correct, the car cranks fine, starts and immediately dies. Fuel pressure regulator looks like a pain to get to. Can it be done with the engine in the car? Injectors and pump look a little easier. Also, if it helps, the car seems to have a stronger smell of fuel since this problem started occurring. Thanks!

POST 4Original post

Just throwing some ideas out there. Check the evap regen valve - move key to ON (not start) and listen for clicking sounds near the throttle body. The fuel pressure regulator can be replaced with the engine in the car, but have to move some things out of the way. I take it no CEL codes? Any problems fueling the car?

POST 5Original post

I had a very similar problem with my 99 cab last year. When you said you tested the fuel pressure for a long period of time. Was the pressure tested AFTER engine shut down to see how long it held pressure? If the pressure doesn't hold for about an hour the fuel will boil in the fuel rail and cause hard re-starting/stumbling/dieing.. The problem I had with my 99 cab was a fuel injector would stick open after a long drive and a short stop. It would start and die or be hard to start and run rough even with the throttle held slightly open to keep it running it would missfire. Smelled gas ect (flooded). At first it would clear up on the second or third start, but then got worse. After it got worse I kept it running and drove it while missfiring and the check engine began to flash, then it smoothed out. tested the codes and was a missfire on cylinder 1. replaced the fuel injector on cylinder 1 and problem solved.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, it was done after shutdown and the engine held fuel pressure for over an hour. What you describe is exactly my problem. I know I have had misfires on cylinder 1, but my tech thought he fixed them. This morning the car was rough.. Rough enough that in my head I was ready to throw in the towel. I will look into this next. Also, no CEL. I will also check the evap regen valve since that is easy to do. Thanks!
