Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got back from Summit Point this weekend and was getting the car ready for a suspension overhaul and noticed grease coming from the very end of the rear axle. This is the left rear axle which makes sense since it does see the most forces on this track. I always thought this shaft was solid?? These are also turbo axles with PT# 996.332.024.10 on my 2000 996 track car. So is this a seal issue or are the shafts done?

POST 2Original post

How do the CV boots look? Do you have grease on the inside of the wheel?

POST 3Original post

Could be a little bit of grease from the wheel bearing, or from the CV joint, that got forced out during the turns, or liquified due to very high brake temperature. My suggestion - clean it up with some degreaser and keep an eye on it. Doesn't look all that bad. See Items 7 and 8, and 9...assembly grease for the spline shaft. http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-p...section=501-05

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the help guys.. The CV joints/boots look good. I did not notice any vibrations. I thought wheel bearings too but the grease is at the very end of the shaft and is coming from that hole. It is not on the threads. I would like to think the high g-forces in the turns on a hot day pushed the grease out but this looks excessive. Here is the right side:

POST 5Original post

The drive shaft is hollow drilled to reduce weight. I do not see how any grease from the wheel bearing or CV joint could get into the drive shaft. So it is strange. Maybe some old sludge that just found its way out while hard cornering.

POST 6Original post

Bumping an old thread - that hole is the vent hole on the end of the stub axle and it reaches down to the outboard CV Joint, and the grease coming out is CV Joint grease. Mine started happening in 2015 on my Boxster after a track event, but it was very minor, so I kept an eye on it, until lately it has gotten much worse and getting all over the place, and has started seeping out of the big end of the CV Boot. I'm in the middle of cleaning the joints, repacking with Redline CV-2, and new boots. I'm done with the left axle (the one with the mess) and while there was still grease in there, it was virtually a liquid (I guess due to heat/age?). It also has just started to happen on the passenger side so I'm rebuilding that side too. I am also finding that my driver side hub has a lot of grease on it, and some has gunked up the rear rotor on that side as well. It has been a while, how did it work out for your situation? Steve Edit: there is a good picture in this post that shows the backside of the stub axle, where the grease is coming out - you can see how the grease from that outer cv joint could get out that hole under hard cornering forces if it gets liquified. https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...ml#post6193936
