Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

People seem to encourage the use of a magnetic drain plug but what affect does this have on the oil analysis? Seems like it would skew the results by removing some of the iron from the analysis and possibly disguise the very problem you were hoping the UOA would prevent? If this isn't an issue, why not?

POST 2Original post

It gives you instant feedback when you do an oil change and I'd rather have those particles on the plug than in circulation, however small they may be.

I believe the oil analysis measures more PPM of metals rather than chunks, I doubt the magnet would skew the results that much.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, no one seems concerned about this but me. Here is the reply I received from Blackstone. I was hoping for something scholarly. It's just fine to install a magnetic drain plug. I did an experiment a few years back with two of my cars and adding a magnetic drain plug didn't seem to alter our results much at all. We'll still be able to get a good look at how steel parts are wearing.
