I don't understand why Porsche is SOOOOO afraid to change their design...

I don't know why they insist on using the styling of the carerra in a 4 door sedan.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The first pic was published in Europe on Friday and the latter ones are photos of mules that have been circulating since the summer.
Here's a link to the latest report.

Wayne, I know you have been lusting after one of these for a while. The pics don't do it for me. Maybe I'll just need to see one in person.
Porsches are supposed to have only two doors
(except for the Cayenne, of course).
Your comment makes no sense - why can only the Cayenne have 4 doors? That's arbitrary.
I like the photo, although, I'll admit that I've not been impressed with the photos of the interior that I've seen... too many buttons.
Phil, maybe you can take two of the doors off the Panamera and put them on your C4S. Then you'll actually be able to get IN your car to drive it! Apparently, Porsche forgot to put doors on your car.
The car looks worse in person IMO, and yes, there are WAY too many buttons on the interior. The interior finish is nice though.
I can't get over that scabbed on looking rear end.
Yikes. I think it looks terrible. I pray Porsche never releases a car that looks like that. I don't know why they insist on using the styling of the carerra in a 4 door sedan. It makes no sense. Just build a new sedan with Porsche performance. Just my opinion.
I don't understand why Porsche is SOOOOO afraid to change their design... I completely understand the 911 with it's heritage and keeping this model basically the way is was meant and is meant to be forever!
BUT why does the Panemeameria (whatever!!) have to look like a 4 door 911?? with an hatch back?!?!
Ofcourse there will be buyers...just look at the butt ugly Cayenne (okay the Turbo and GTS look nice, but the inside is even uglier with that triangle steering wheel center)
THESE ARE ALL MY OPINIONS (so no hate mail please).... but just look at Ferrari.. pinniferinenanana (?) comes up with great new designs (and yes sometimes there is a miss..but mostly they are HITS!!)
Stop being to scarred german designers and come with a great new model....maybe a revival of the 928 GTS??? BUT than designed in this century!!!
I just associate Porsche CARS with having two doors. For me, it's like slapping extra doors on a Ferrari. Not that makes no sense. On an SUV, fine, but not a sports car. Just not for me. Again, maybe when I see one in person, I'll feel differently. The pics are not encouraging.
Who at Porsche is designing such ugly lines in the Panamera?
I saw some early concept drawings that looked great.
This looks like another fight between the design guys and marketing (or engineering).
I guess I don't understand this industry. With the Audi S8 in the available parts bin, why create an entirely new car? In this economy, with the luxury sport sedan segment flooded with excellent cars and choices, what will the demand for the Panamera be? I would have to see it in person, the pictures don't excite me.
Stefan
I cannot bring myself to like the back end. Just fugly.
On the same token, I love the C4S back end immensely!
Maybe they have a new kid (rookie?) on the block on the design department.
The rear end is definitely NOT on the same class and taste as the C4S lines.
I couldn't buy a car looking like that, after being spoiled by a C4S.
John
I actually think that last set of pics actually looks pretty decent.
I think in person the car will be a lot more striking, very low, long wheelbase, plus fast.
The R8 was the same way, didn't really dig it until I saw it in person (at the LA auto show).
Nice from some angles. To me the roof line looks like it almost thought about being a hatchback. To me the worst part is that console full of buttons. Looks like it belongs in a truck. But I bet I will like it in person when I see one (not enough to buy one, however).
I love the new Panamera!
I think it looks masculine, macho; I miss my 2001 Mercedes E sometimes, and this would be an awesome replacement. I miss the elegance, comfort, and roominess when I need to entertain.
If I can get around in bad weather as well with a Panamera 4S as I can in my Infiniti FX35, I'm getting one. SUV's are so dangerous due to rollover risk, and handling in general sucks.
The Panamera is a hit in the style department, and if performance matches looks then I'm sold, sign me up.
Hell no I'm not selling the 911! That **** is my "crack".
I like the way it looks. My problem is that I spent 92k in 2004, drove for 20k miles, and the same cars are now being sold for 38k..............I would probably buy a Cayenne s/turbo before the Pano? at least you can tow a boat with the "Pepper".
Steve
I really like the look from various front angles, but the back is horrible. Looks like misguided effort to create a station wagon. I would have preferred a little bit of traditional trunk at the rear, about as much as the 6-series BMW.
Yes, those would be the forum members whose posts are titled "what do you think of my options list?" or "I love my tiptronic!" or "will these 20s fit on my Boxster?"
The brand has been steadily diluted ever since the introduction of the Boxster. Then when the 911 died a watery wet sump death, brand dilution kicked into high gear. The SUV and the Panamera don't bother me as much as the mainstreaming of their "sports cars."
That said, I never would have believed Porsche could design something as ugly as the Panamera.
In USA you don't pay atention to diesel engines...
What do you think about the new Cayenne diesel?
http://www.porsche.com/spain/models/...ndetail/drive/
Purist Porsche people think that diesel is for tractors
Porsche is a brand with the only point of view located to obtain profits.
Next project and rummors are a new urban Porsche in the same market segment of VW Golf , BMW 120 series ....
Thanks for posting! Porsche seems to be very desperate! I remember the CEO Dr. Wiedeking saying some years back that there will never be a Diesel engine in a Porsche; guess he'll now say that Porsche started with Diesel tractors so it's logic to see a diesel Cayenne (which is a modern tractor anyhow).
Btw, Porsche had to close the 911 factory for an entire week last month due to over-production or let's better call it under-demand.
IMHO Porsche is heading for serious "brand" integrity troubles. This coming from someone who has an irrational love of all things Porsche. It's the only car I've ever wanted.
The SUV looks weak in my opinion. What an opportunity and they blew it. I'd much rather have a VW Touareg (same platform, better exterior/interior) The Panamera, looks like a collossal failure, however I'll hope for the best and hold final judgement until I see one in person.
The worst thing about the Porsche brand is that the car no longer holds its' value. 2001 TT selling for the high 30's yep. 2007 Caymans with 20K miles selling for the mid to high 30's (MSRP 50 - 64K). We all know about the 996, worth about 5-8 K more than a nice Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Today, an auction for a 2006 911 with 7 K miles did not exceed $26K in bidding! A 75K Porsche two years ago couldn't command a bid of 30K in today's market. WOW. You don't see this with Ferarri, even in today's market.
I'm sick.
Porsche was THE bonus car for finance guys and they are all on the ropes, my man. This has more to do with dumping assets than anything else. Heck, the S&P 500 is down 50% from peak to trough. It's rough out there. And for what it's worth, you ought to see sales on houses in the Hamptons. Oh lord.
You nailed it. But the steep depreciation curve of post-993 Porsches is not due only to the current economic climate...
...
There is no doubt that Porsche has become a hugely successful car manufacturer thanks to the 986/996/Cayenne. However, the flip side of that coin is what we are seeing now - disposable cars that lack real passion and craftsmanship, steep depreciation, and brand dilution. You can't have it both ways - either you cater to a small niche and maintain a cult following, or cater to the masses and become subject to a fickle audience. They used to say "A Porsche wasn't intended to mean something to everyone; It was intended to mean everything to someone." Certainly that is no longer true.
"The worst thing about the Porsche car is that it no longer holds its' value...."
But isn't that actually a good thing, narrowing the market (thereby increasing the car's "uniqueness") to those who do not have need to care about resale value...??
Do LS600h or GS450h customers buy for resale value...??
I have not, and will not, purchase a Porsche Cayenne due to it's unique market segment appeal. Put the Cayenne on a serious weight loss program, add an equivalent to the Lexus GS350's R/AWD system and its DFI V6 engine and I'll have an interest.
Other than, potentially, the off-road crowd (obviously NO interest in the Cayenne "there"), what is the need for a HEAVY, 0-60 HP/torque rated, hi/lo range 4X4 SUV, Turbocharged, yet.
Only those with money to burn IMMHO....!!
Give me a Panamera targeted more toward FE, even the latest DFI boxer (rear..??) engine, and I'm "in". Otherwise the deep pockets folks are the market, narrow, UNIQUE, market.
