Suggestion
My assumption was made from the statement that my particular X73 is recommended for 2003 and up C4S only.

You may still not like the wheel gap that you're left with.
I am contemplating the X74 kit for my 99-01 C2 Carrera, which currently has the ROW M030 suspension kit installed. The kit was Installed less than 250-miles ago. The ride is perfect; however, the car still sits a little too high for me. Will not consider an aftermarket kit so please refrain from those comments.
Any thoughts?
I may be willling to sell the ROW MO30 if anyone is interested.........Im in So. CA. and really don't want the hassle of shipping.........
If you consider than the ride is perfect, why go for a stiffer suspension?
I would go for Gemballa springs with the same shocks
As a matter of fact I'm going to lower my car with them
I think my car is too high after installling the RoW M030 too
Some pics from my mechanic Porsche specialist, and he recommends me to do that
You have my attention! These springs you indicate, are they 'matched' w/ the ROW M030 shocks or are they merely 'lowering-springs' from Gamballa? Really would like to know.......
Thank You,
http://shop.fvd.de/de/en/Porsche-0/-...%28TUV%29.html
They are lowering springs from Gemballa.
My mechanic told that M030 springs lowers 20 mm front an 10 mm rear.
These Gemballa springs lower 30 mm aprox.
If you go for these springs with stock US suspension they would forcing the stock shocks because they were too much high, but can work with Row M030
They are perfect to fit with shorter shocks (as you can see in the upper pic with yellow shock = Bilstein Sprint)
Not looking for a 'cheap' solution, just the right "PORSCHE" solution and to my knowledge, ROW M030 / X74 are the only factory choices. One, which I have is perfect - ride wise, but is not quite low enough. The other - X74 is low enough, but does have a more stiff ride, which I'm willing to deal with......
I have the same "problem"
Here is mine:
After installing the RoW M030, lowered 20 mm front and 10 mm rear.
Before this, It was too much taller than I'd like, but after the installation the height didn't pleased me.
That's why I'll probably mount Gemballa springs.
Looks like you're right on the money on your choices. The X73 on my C4S is just the right height. If you don't have bad roads with a lot of potholes or bad expansion joints, the stiffer ride of the X74/73 is not that noticeable. That is, until you bring it to the track. Then that suspension just shines.
juankimalo,
I see your problem too. X74 for me. No aftermarket mix of springs for me. Thanks for you help...........
Thankfully, the sways from ROW are the same in the X74 kit.
Your car looks "slammed" compared the the ride height I got after I dropped my car off a "Billy Joe Bob's Garage and Eatery." They were done by the time I finished eating lunch, and here is what I saw when I walked out to the parking lot! The food wasn't any good either!
The pic above is what really started me down the path of heavy modding. Here is a pic of the final product.
I can't believe no one wanted to buy this before my lease ended!
IIRC, the X74 for your year was only offered as a factory option. The X74 now available is for MY02+, and it is not recommended by Porsche as a retrofit to pre 02 cars. I have never heard/seen anyone able to purchase the Gen I 996 appropriate X74. Although I have heard of many people putting the 02+ X74 on early 996s successfully.
My point being that you are searching for the right "PORSCHE" solution, but are considering something Porsche does not recommend. If I were in your shoes, I would seriously consider aftermarket parts to make the ride height what you want. The aftermarket parts fill the gap that OEM solutions cannot fill. They are no less "right" and defnintely not "cheap." I would bet there are springs that work correctly with the M030 dampers.
There are probably many threads on this all over the net, but here are a few from Renntech:

FWIW, I went stock -> ROW M030 -> PSS9. The improvement from stock to M030 is about as dramatic as M030 to PSS9. Both in handling and in harshness.

I've heard and read this till the cows came home. Gert does have the 'factory' spring and dampener numbers and they 'match' the 02-04's numbers exactly. The ONLY difference is that the US has no 'kit' available for the early 996's,
I have searched and talked w/ soooo many Porsche people and not one has been able to produce something tangible stating (from Porsche Corp.) that this kit, "is not recommended for the early 996".
If you have this information in print, please scan and post for all.
Thanks for your help though.....
Yup. Looks like you're on your own.
Why not call Porsche directly and ask them? Then you can post the answer for all future generations and be a hero...

What you're describing that you want can only be delivered from PSS9's. I'm uncertain why you have ruled out aftermarket parts (esp ones with lifetime warranties that they stand behind) when they fit your needs better than the OEM parts.
The X74 isn't THAT much lower than the ROW M030. You may still not like the wheel gap that you're left with.
Andy
Tomorrow I'm going to see a friend's car that just installed the X74 on his 99
C2. That will be the deciding vote, as he has 18" shoes too.........
By the way Andy, your car looks great.
at certain angles (like your pic), mine looks just fine, however, sitting in the gargage and looking at it while squating, it definitely has too much gap.
Wouldn't it be great if Porsche had a different set of springs to accomodate a select few of us......
X74
is an optional from Porsche.
Lowers 40 mm front and 30 rear from stock height
Includes stiffer shocks, shorter and springs, and wider antiroll bars.
The shocks are made by Bilstein
PSS9 or PSS10
are coilover kit adjustable in 9 or 10 positions. you can choose the harder or softer you'd like the suspension, and the same with height.
Made by Bilstein too.
I drove a 996 with PSS9 some weeks ago and It was good-looking, but not so harsh. It was in the medium position (hard). I love them.
As Gert said, X74 is very noticeable compared to RoW M030
As I have the same "problem" with M030 Gaps, I cheked my car compared to a 996 Carrera X74 from a friend of mine, and they look absolutely different.
I went from ROW M030 to X74 on my 02 Coupe and the handling and aesthetics is greatly improved in my experience. The lower ride height is especially noticeable in the rear. With X74 I have just the right stance-ride height is perfecto now. Handling is better too in all facets but it is much more firm the the ROW M set up. There is almost no body roll at all, really fantastic. If you drive a bumpy road for more than a minute or two though you'll feel like you did 50 sit ups because the firmness will make ya tense up a bit. I love it though, totally worth the compromise for me.
OK. let me give it a try.
My C4S is 2002. The X73 kit is for 2003 and up. Nobody said it was NOT recommended for the '02. just that it was for the '03 and up C4S. So, I researched, and agonized. It boiled down to one question: Is there any structural difference between the '02 vs '03 C4S? The answer: No. The '02 and 03 C4S are exactly the same. The '02 was introduced to the US late in the year, and there were NO changes for '03. So, I bought and installed the kit.
Now. Same question. Is there any structural difference between the '99 vs the '02 C2? Answer: Yes. Chassis has been tweaked several times. Rigidity in all axes, particularly torsional, have been increased. Engines have changed, and therefore more chassis changes associated with it. The X74 was specifically designed with these changes altready in place. So. Is the X74 right for the '03 C2? Definitely. Is it right for the '99 C2? No, for the reasons stated above. Is it wrong for the '99 C2? Dunno, your call. Is it more right or more wrong than the aftermarkets like PSS9? Dunno either, unless PSS9's etc have different part numbers for the '99 C2 and the '02 C2.
Let me give it a try :
Question : Did Porsche offer the X74 as an option for the '99 C2 or C4 ?
Answer : YES !
I have a German order guide from '99 where they list the X74 as a factory option.
Facts vs assumptions.
I stand corrected, and appreciate the info. Thanks, Gert. My assumption was made from the statement that my particular X73 is recommended for 2003 and up C4S only. This statement came from one we all know and love, Loren of Renntech.org and here.
Questions. Are the part numbers for the '99 X74 and the '02 X74 the same? If the same, or even if different, what model years are the X74 kits recommended for, if at all, by the parts book? I hear that it's an option in an order guide, but is the X74 part number available in PET or Porsche parts book for a '99 911? I'm just trying to get all the facts straight so there are no assumptions
.
Thanks!
HI i car has cargraphic H/R SPRINGS with reg shocks and it looks slammed 25inch front and 25rear ....the ride is not bouncy and firm...just as a race car should be......

Ed, the first rule about giving Newbies a hard time for not posting pics is..... make sure they have not posted them already.
Maci911 Pics
After all, you don't want the Newbies having the upper hand!
And you probably thought harassing Newbies was easy! It takes a lot of work to do it correctly.
The '99 C2 I nearly bought was delivered in '99 brand new with the X-74 suspension on it from Champion Porsche in florida. They had to order the suspension separately and install it once the car was delivered but you'd have to figure that if Porsche didn't approve of it that the dealer wouldn't be selling cars that way.
Andy
As with many things on Porsches these days, just because you (and others) have done so, doesn't actually make it Porsche approved/recommended. Take 20" rims for example.
Perhaps the relevant point was too subtle: this particular issue relates to how much (if any) truth is in the "urban legend" that Porsche has issued some official statement that the X74 retrofit from a post 02 996 is not recommended for a pre 02 996. [Not whether anyone has done it/loves it/recommends it/ etc]
One source indicates that the Tequipment catalog for the X74 (post 02) stated that it (the 02+ x74) was
not
recommended for pre 02 996's. I hunted around, but couldn't find that catalog so I gave up looking for it. Maybe someone with more time or dedication can find it. I also understand that the issue is not normal driving, but extreme driving, whereby structural issues can manifest themselves. There is also the possibility that Porsche stated it for a while, but then realized it was in error, and now there is some confusion as to Porsche's official stand on this.
As Audi pointed out, the X74 was a factory option on the early 996s, but so far no one has actually seen/posted/noted the existence of a 99-02 specific X74 upgrade kit. I would guess that the majority of X74 kits added to early 996s have been post -02 X74 retrofits.
-td
Yes I did. His car is 1/2" lower in front and 3/4" lower in rear. I didn't drive it, but I have been in other X74's and loved it.
I'm ready to order, but I that leaves me with the ROW M030 Suspension which I'd like to sell. The suspension has less than 250 miles and was purchased from Suncoast........
. I know. Be a member, anyway. This is a fun place. See how you stated you were not considering anything else other than the X74, and this thread STILL went up to 4 pages, and still keeps going
. I always log in with popcorn and drink in hand. It's quite entertaining.
