I did the whole floor in one color, beige, to match the house exterior color, also installed tile with all grain pattern in same direction.

I am looking for advice from anyone in the Northeast who has used tile or some other material on their garage floor.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking for advice from anyone in the Northeast who has used tile or some other material on their garage floor. If you have had it through at least one winter, how did it hold up? Would you use the same material again? Thanks
I got mine from the dealer by me--Any color any size they come install only pay for what I use dont have to buy a whole box of a certain color. Plus there is cutting involved as well--normally I would have done myself but for $300 or so to install it was well worth the 2 hrs they were there-- btw the space is 19x19

Cleaning--you can sweep dirt and junk right off it or use a leaf blower--from rain and such there are dirt wwater stains-so you can hose off or use windex and just wipe away. It has the pseudo diamond plate finish so its raised and hasnt been slippery.
I almost got a high grade industrial carpet but the price is close to this so skipped it

Re race deck: I use a wet mop with floor cleaner every once in a while. The tiles are raised slightly off the floor, so any moisture that gets in will run off or dry up eventually. FWIW I have jacked up large cars on the floor, and they can handle a huge amount of weight without deforming.
Grizzy,
You paid 300 total for your race deck? I just spoke to a lady who quoted me 1400 for a 20x20.
Did you guys get the diamond flooring or the circle trac? Does anyone have the "free flow"?
I just spoke to Dave at ZR1 and he quoted me 3.49 sq.ft before discount.
Are they still connectable if you cut them in order to make them fit within a given space? And how would you cut them.....perhaps Skil Saw or Jig Saw?
Cheers and safe driving.
You only cut the side that doesn't connect to another tile (e.g. where it meets the walls). i used a table saw for long cuts (12") and a band saw for the irregular cuts, but a jig saw would also work. It is very simple, and I would recommend a rubber hammer to speed up the installation. The pieces snap together and form a very tight lock.
OH997, in answer to your first question, I live in Annapolis and put down the Armstrong tile this past summer so I experiencing my first winter (what little we have had). So far the tile looks as new as it did when I installed it. When wet floor is slippery, but still less slippery that when it was painted. Installed tile myself (pain in the a--) but doable, took about two weekends. I had entire garge painted gloss white before I started, including concrete footer. Installed white rubber 4" moulding around perimeter when done. I did the whole floor in one color, beige, to match the house exterior color, also installed tile with all grain pattern in same direction. If I had it to do over, I would still install all the same color, but I would alternate the grain patterns to create a checkerboard effect. I do not have any pictures but I can take some if you like.
Thanks Huskydog. Would you be able to let me know exactly which Armstrong tile you used? I stopped at Home Depot and they were pretty clueless.
I am also curious why you painted the floor first. A picture would be great. Thanks again.
I have racedeck as well and it cost be about $2.90 sq.ft. Installed in June, no problems so far. Install was a snap (no pun intended) 20x24 grarage took two hours.
At our prevous house, I had Armstrong tile installed in Sept. 1988 and sold the house in March 1992. It was a black marble-like design (alternating direction) that looked fabulous to the day we sold the house. I just mopped it a couple of times each winter. It was indeed slippery when wet. Installed in a one-car garage, the cost was $1300 (in 1988) -- quite pricey.
When we moved to our current house, I painted the garage floor with Sears heavy duty garage floor paint in August 1992 and again in October 1998. It held up extremely well. No blistering or peeling, it just wears out gradully under the tires (and we use our garage for constant in-and-out). I repainted this last summer with Sears garage floor paint, except, it turns out, this time, the paint was latex-based instead of oil-based and hasn't held up well at all. I went back to Sears and demanded my money back, and got it. Turns out, they do make the oil-based, but they don't sell it in NY. I tried to buy some in NH while visiting at Thanksgiving time, but they were out of stock and not likely to re-stock until spring. I'll try again next time we're there.
If you can get the Sears garage floor paint in oil-based mixture, I would highly recommend it.
Other questions about Race Deck-type materials: Do they drain or puddle from a wet car or hosing out the garage? Corollary question: Do they get all funky/moldy underneath? How do they stand up to things like floor jacks, etc.? They look trick, but I'm trying to find out in advance what I'm in for.
For parking only the plastic flooring is great. Looks sharp and keeps dust on the floor out of sight.
However, turn a wheel or do heavy lifting and it gets outta whack. I've gone to Porter Paints Industrial Floor epoxy. Two part epoxy requires a respirator ($20/Lowes) and an acid etch prep for the concrete floor. It holds up to hot tires (never peeled) and to cold snow/ice.
Despite the extra effort to install, it is the most durable high quality finish you can put on the floor... short of the granite cited above ;-) Now if I could find a way to drive my cars and NOT get them dirtly, that would be nirvana....
The Race Deck tiles have a raised profile underneath, so any water which seeps down will not puddle or get moldy; they are also treated with something antifungal. However, I would not recommend hosing it down because it is not designed for that. They make a separate version of tiles for those applications (which I did not install). I have jacked up both my 745Li and my big SUV, without any damage. (I understand it is even used in fire houses). You can find out more on line.
