Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I see a lot of folks saying an '02 C2 is much improved over an '01. Could someone please list the improvements? Do any relate to reliability or quality?
As well as I can remember, 3.4 L engine changed to 3.6 L so HP jumped from 300 to 320, 02 got the the glove box added, interior plastics were improved, headlights from the turbo were put on the standard cars, and I am sure a few other things as well, but that will get you started. I specifically looked for an 2002 for the engine change and ended up buying a 2002 C4S. Wonderful car.
In addition to items listed by dhud, cabrios got a rigid glass rear window instead of the soft vinyl one; aerodynamic changes resulted in 25% less lift at the front and 40% at the rear; coupes had a 25% increase in beam and torsional stiffness (10% increase in cabrios); the 3.6l engine also featured Variocam Plus, 6% more torque and better fuel economy that the 3.4l.

From the sales '02 brochure: ...headlight system derived from the 911 Turbo. More discreet is the careful reshaping of the front and rear fenders, bumpers and air dam. The result is 25% less lift in the front and 40% less lift at the rear for improved high speed stability.... Reinforcements to the body structure have resulted in a 25% increase in torsional rigidity for crisper response and enhanced agility. The standard 17" wheels weigh almost eight pounds less than the previous design, while the optional 18" wheels are lighter by over 24 pounds. The front air ducts have been reshaped to increase the flow of cooling air to the radiators by 15%"
You also get 20 more HP, a glove box, better cup holders and a glass rear window in the cab. I test drove a number of cars and spent a few $$ more for an '02. You could definitely tell the difference when you drive them back to back.

Go for the 2001. The 20 HP are more than cancelled out by additional weight. so you get the same basic acceleration performance but a heavier car with a motor that is closer to being overbuilt than the 2001. Result would be a slightly less lively feel. Continuing an unfortunate Porsche trend, the 2002 is marginally less sports car and a little more GT car.
Many drivers also complain that the variocam in the 2002 produces an annoying surge.
I had a '99 and now have an '04. Go for the '02+. It's worth it alone just for the aerodynamic upgrades (especially the better airflow for the radiators) and the stiffer chassis (my old one had issues with a squeaky dash and rear quarter windows).
In my mind, the differences between the two are as significant as those between the 996 & 997. Why not get the one where they worked most of the kinks out if you can afford it? It's a much better car...I know, I had both.
I have a 99, which I really like. I think the 02+ looks better for all the reasons mentioned, but the price differential was not worth upgrading. If depreciation is a factor for you, the 99 - 01's have already taken a big hit and the 02, 03, and 04s, will really take a hit as soon as the 997 sales take off. JMO
