Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Repair under warrenty' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair under warrenty' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am just curious to determine the mileage on your 996 and if you or prior owners have had any minor , major or no mechanical failures. Minor failures include bulbs burning, sensor errors, rattling etc.......while major flaws include RMS failures, tranny, engine components and son on. For those of you who drive in countries with KM's the conversion rate is 1 Km = .6214 Miles.
24K, zero major problems, I drive mine daily, yr round, including track time. Only minor one is where the radio goes into a security mode. They replaced the radio, still does it.
No problems after 45,000 miles. But because someone suggested it...I am still in the "break in" period. You know.....taking it easy for the first 100,000 miles or so to be sure everything is seated. HEE HEE. I also use only Porsche air in my tires amd Porsche windshield washer fluid.
16k miles, 4 years, and no problems (besides rattling air vent on dash since new and fixed and a broken center console hinge which was a known defect) on 01 996 C2 cab.
i acutally thought about coming with a poll that would allow us to extrapolate the actual percentage of porsches that have RMS issues but decided i did not have the time to interpret all the data and crunch the numbers
basically we would have to find out our sample size - those people who are here for whatever reason so long as they did not seek this site out initally because of RMS issues. this would be our random sample size. those who sought out rennlist because they were trying to learn more about the RMS issue would skew the randomization. so say we had 100 people here for whatever reason who had 2003 996's. and say 1000 '03 996's were sold that year so we would have 4% of the owners. say 22 out of our 100 had RMS issues in the meantime then we could extrapolate that 22% of 2003 996's had RMS probs or exactly 220 996's.
the problem would be in crunching all the numbers and coming up with an elaborate questionairre so we could delineate model years, 1st vs 2nd owner etc, yada yada yada
too much for me
but you get the gist
MY01 C2 Coupe
18K: cracked cyclinder - engine replacement
few days after engine replacement, faulty MAF sensor - replaced
20K: squeaky clutch pedal - lubricated
Daytime running lights not working, relay replaced
23K: screeching noise from clutch bell housing - turns out to be leaking coolant hose - retightened
1 week after - hose not the problem, bad water pump - replaced
Also, to this day, I still have an intermittent problem with the gas tank tricking the gas station's pump into thinking the tank is full. I need to pull the trigger slowly to get gas into the tank. Dealer could not reproduce, and it's not the documented ORVR problem with the flap. Happens maybe once every few months.
The dealer has been great in providing warranty service, prompt and courteous, but my warranty runs out in April. I have heard 3rd part warranty companies won't warranty replacement parts, so I'm a bit concerned.
- Engine replacement at about 30K RMS failure
- Replaced clutch when RMS was done, early clutch wear.
- Alternator "Crapped Out" on me (Christmas Day 2002) on the way home in the rain at 11pm at night.
- Replaced MAF's (x2)- CEL Warning
- Oxygen Sensors (x2)- CEL Warning
- Replaced coolant overflow container
- Lost one Litronic torch
- And those pesky leather sport seats keep coming apart at the seam where it is tucked around on the side...looks tacky
Most everything repaired under warrenty.
23k and loving it. Previous owner replaced RMS, at last checkup dealer thought it might be weeping again but wasn't sure -- cleaned it up and will recheck before the warranty runs out this spring.
Other than that, only minor problems -- bulbs burnt out, broken headlight clamp (as per my previous thread). About what I expect from any car, and I can do a lot more with this one.
