Here in the midwest, if I see a car painted bright yellow, it's probably a Chevy Cavalier or Colorado pickup or equally boring car.

I ran into this guy on the NY thruway in Rockland this morning....gorgeous gt3 i think?

When passing another 911 some folks wave, some folks flash their high beams. But what is the proper greeting etiquette when coming up directly behind another 911 or if you are in front of one?
I would think a wave would suffice.
Actually where I live, people who own Porsches are arrogant, jerk-offs who do not wave back. They buy a Porsche for the status, not for what it is.
I got waves all the time in my old 'vette and sportbikes.
I would like to think that owning a Porsche separates us from other cars on the road. So with that said, displaying our passion for owning such a great automobile to another Porsche owner on the road is a nice thing to do but not necessary. I will wave or high-beam another Porsche owner and in most cases (I say 2 out 3) I will get a response back. I am usually the initiator of the 'greeting' but I have also had a couple initiate first. Yes I see motorcyles (specifically HD owners) do this greeting as they go by each other, but they also do not greet all riders. I have also had other exotic car owners wave at me even some Corvette owners, and I will wave back to them (I do not initiate a greeting to most of these though).
So for me I will say hello to fellow Porsche drivers. If they do not wave back then I really do not care.
I totally wave at all the 911s and it's usually the older 911 guys who wave back since, I'm guessing, they appreciate the history of the car.
I used to be too cool for school and act all hard, but realizing now that there's good to being positive and friendly.
I noticed that too. It's the older guys who usually initiate or wave back, especially if they are driving a 964 or 930. Young guys are often caught off guard but will wave back on reflex. And don't even get me started on women. For some reason women of all ages driving any year of 911 don't even acknowledge me in my 911.
I don't think the people in SAT are arrogant......
Seems to be pretty laid back, open, and friendly.
Maybe my perception is off. I did live for a long time in DAL.
Maybe they are not paying attention and do not see you wave.
I wave, don't care if the wave is not acknowledged all the time. Eventually it'll grow on other nonwaving Pcar owners.
My boss in his Pcar was a 'nonwaver', he's a 'waver' now.
I wave to every p car i see....sometimes they won't see me...no biggie. On the others....most wave or flash back. I try to get the attention of boxsters, 944's, all 911's, 356, 924, most anything. Although I will say that while I love Cayennes, I don't make the attempt...just strange.
I ran into this guy on the NY thruway in Rockland this morning....gorgeous gt3 i think? It's a 997....I came up on him and then next to him...got the wave in a second. Fantastic ride, anyone know who it is?
I don't know how to block a plate number, so if the owner sees this and is offended...I'm sorry...PM me and I'll take it down.
Best,
J
I'd say 90% wave or flash. Women sometimes do if not on the cellphone, which is hardly ever, so I don't count them. I'd say the least likely to are are 997's. (and who cares about SUVs)
Nothing more annoying than waving at what I think is a 996, and getting a "WTF stare", only for me to see the mid engine vents and realize it's a Boxster poser that isn't waving back. No wonder 911 guys complained when the new 996 came out looking like a Boxster up front! Makes it way harder to see who to wave to, or not!
Out here in Socal, I've never had another P-car driver wave or flash, unlike the Corvette folks who do it religiously. It seems like the P-car drivers almost deliberately avoid any eye contact with the others. The only place I got a flash was from a group of Boxsters in Moab, UT when I was in my 993.
I have owned several street bikes and it is common place, I always wave. Many dont wave back and think that there **** dont stink! I think its just showing respect that we see each other, and were on there side when ****** in old 350z cut us off and try to act bad for their retarded kids! (can you tell this happened)
I wouldn't wave AND flash, you will look like a spastic!
Flashing IMO seems very 80's. I used to do that with my Toyota 4X4 to others back in the day. With the 911 or Boxster I just give the peace sign or thumbs up and roll on if aknoledged or not.

WTF are you talking about?
I guess I am happy for you that you have come to realize that being positive and friendly are good things.
God help us!!!
If I have to waive everytime I see a Porsche in the Newport Beach area........Porsches are like camry's here....Lambo's (only the Murcielago's) and Ferrari's (actually only the Enzo is considered special around here since you see the 430 spider here a couple of time everyday). Must suck to be rich!! ...NOT!!
I have always waved....but, I've seen this kind of thread before...
Consider the motorcycle post below and start substituting models and marques...and ....
To Wave or Not to Wave
By Shalom Auslander
I love motorcycles, and I love riding. Like many of you what first drew me to bikes was not just the experience of riding, but the feeling that I'd become part of a special community - a brotherhood, really. Nothing calms me more than a long ride down the interstate, waving to the members of my beloved clan. Except when I pass Harley guys. I hate Harley guys. Hate, hate, hate. When they pass me on the highway, you know what I do? I don't wave. With their little tassel handlebars and the studded luggage and the half helmets - God, they drive me crazy.
You know who else I hate? BMW guys. Oh, do I hate those guys. I don't wave at them either. They think they're so great, sitting all upright, with their 180 degree German engines. God, I hate them. They're almost as bad as those old bastards on their touring motorcycles. You know what I call those bikes? "Two wheeled couches!" Get it? Because they're so big. They drive around like they have got all day. Appreciate the scenery somewhere else Grandpa, and while you’re at it, I'm not waving to you.
Ducati guys - I don't wave at them either. Why they don't spend a little more money on their bikes? "You can have it in any color as long as it is red." Aren't you cool! Like they even know what a Desmo-whatever engine is, anyway. Try finding the battery, you Italian-wannabe racers! I never, ever wave at those guys.
Suzuki guys aren't much better, which is why I never wave at them, either. They always have those stupid helmets sitting on the top of their stupid heads, and God forbid they should ever wear any safety gear. They make me so mad. Sometimes they'll speed by and look over at me and you know what I do? I don't wave. I just keep going.
Please, don't get me started on Kawasaki guys. Ninjas? What are you, twelve years old? Team Green my ***. I never wave at Kawasaki guys.
I ride a Honda. I'll only wave at Honda guys but even then, I'll never wave at a guy in full leathers. Never, never, never. Yeah like you're going to get your knee down on the New York Thruway. Nice crotch, by the way. Guys in full leathers will never get a wave from me, and by the way, neither will the guys in two piece leathers.
And I'll tell you who else I'm not waving at - those guys with the helmets with loud paint jobs. Four pounds of paint on a two pound helmet - like I'm going to wave back at that! I'll also never wave at someone with a mirrored visor.
Or helmet stickers. Or racing gloves. Or hiking boots.
To me, motorcycling is like a family, a close knit brotherhood of people who ride Hondas, wear jeans and a leather jacket (not Vanson) with regular gloves and a solid color helmet with a clear visor, no stickers, no racing gloves and regular boots (not Timberlands). And isn't that what really makes riding so special.
------------------------
We remain tribal.
I've been burned saying this before...but...I find most Boxster owners are just people who want to look cool in a Porsche, without knowing anything about the marque. I call them posers.
Note, I didn't say ALL Boxster owners, just most of the ones I have come across!

I wave or flash. I get mixed results, but probably more responses from 911's than Boxsters. I once pulled up next to a Boxster at a traffic light and the guy didn't even look over at me. I promise I didn't have a wide stance or was shuffling my feet to cause him to ignore me.
I don't think I've ever gotten a response from a Cayenne so I've pretty much given up on those.
I remember how happy I was when I first took my '88 944 NA for a ride in 3/02 after getting it home. I was waiting at a light, when a 993 across the intersection flashed me, and the owner gave me a wave. I waved back, and thought "there is a cool Porsche owner, waving at me in my $6k 944!
that's funny, most people think that about Carreras too
I mean, they're all lumped in with the guy at the dealer who came in while I was checking out a new Cayman S, he asks if there are any Turbos, no, then he asks what they do have
the salesman points to a pair of cabs, both 997 one a CS one a C4S, in different colors and leather treatments, he says "I can't get that one because somebody in the office has that color, so I'll take this one"
he then proceeds to say this, verbatim:
-gesturing toward the rear-
"I've seen some of these on the highway and this seems to pop up, why does it do that?"
he put the car on his amex card
I died a little inside
it's pretty amazing how much i've been hit up about my avatar as if it's in any way inappropriate or whatever. but i put it up for that very reason to sniff out who would be insecure enough to point it out.
but yea i was being completely/utterly serious bud
I think it is a regional thing. When I lived in CT, 90% of Porsche owners waved. When I moved to San Francsico, that number dropped to 20-30%. Here in Utah, the number is closer to 10%. We have many 911s and Boxsters in Park City, UT (vacation home town) and very few people wave. Like CA, I think it is a status thing for most of them...
-B
I can't win. When I drive the Boxster (according to some) I'm a poser or a girl. When drive the 996 (according to some) I'm not in a "real" 911.
Seems more than a little silly to me.

You haven't been reading the 993 board again have you Ray?
Please repeat after me, "I have two REAL Porsches which are good enough and fast enough and I will stop reading the 993 board."
Repeat this saying morning and night while looking into a mirror.
Nupe! I'm sorry, do you need me to give you some love?
I have the same problems... buy a 911 and the only thing I can pick-up are hot guys. I wonder what I'm missing.
Hell yeah, I wave all the time in my 944. I think I have gotten 2 or 3 waves back in over a year. Never once from a woman or a Boxster.
As another poster hinted... they are probably wondering why the guy in the 'supra' or 'celica' is waving at them.
it's a hat and a wife beater dude. the ladies love the guns.
so you put up a pic of yourself so we can play fair else u really need to consider not looking at pics of dudes and bringing attn to it on top of that.
i do have a tough time figuring out if a boxster is headed my way or a 911 carrera at times for the MK1s. rarely do boxster dudes ever say hi.
That is funny, I want that T Shirt Riad! Although I did see the hottest girl driving a 986 yesterday driving a boxster and waving crazily, she might as well of jumped in my lap. She knew were she belongs on the "totem pole".
Google "Jeep Wave" sometime. It's hilarious. There's a wonderful protocol (not really observed, of course) about who has to wave first, based on how dirty, dented and modded the Jeep is. Surely, we could figure out something similar... water cooled guys have to wave first when meeting an air cooled guy, tips have to wave first when meeting a stickshift guy, boulevardiers have to wave before racers...
I just laugh out LOUD at all the fat bastards in their 911 or boxsters...and than realize that I aint no spring chicken anylonger...but a 41yr old fat bastard myself....where did the time go.
RIAD you should be become a standup comedian....you post (almost) always crack me up!..however it might be your turtleface in your avitar.
Here in Boulder, where it seems like every second person is either a pro cylist, a pro tri-geek, or a wannabee cyclist/tri-geek, there's a very definite "hierarchy" of who greets when two cyclists pass each other head to head.
Generally, the wannabee initiates, and waves with hand and/or a head nod. The pro or semi-pro indicates his / her disdain by barely flicking a hand off the handlebar (he or she is too busy "training" you see..), or giving a slight nod with the head. If its truly one of the Boulder elite (or someone who believes they are), the nod becomes nothing more than a slight raise of the chin and an inclination of the head as they fly by.. while the truly desperate to belong are waving like their finger nail polish needs to dry while simultaneously nodding their head in imitation of a bobble head doll in the back window of a car.
Now, as to who is cooler than whom and how one determines this in the 10 seconds 2 cyclists approach and pass each other, as far as I can tell, it's based on a set of rules based on age and expense of bike, age and musculature of bike rider, whether they're legs are shaved or not, and whether they're an actual pro or just a wannabee.. it's all quite complicated, but most of the local cyclists seem to understand it inately.
And if you don't understand the rules, well, you're likely to be the the bobble-head doll drying yourfingernails, and definitely not part of the "in" crowd anyway.
- Nick
BoulderNick, I laughed out loud at your post. Porsche guys are amateurs compared to road cyclists when it comes to arcane customs, hierarchy and snobbery. Imagine if a bunch of guys went out for a drive together and were expected to "just know" who goes to the line, who leads out the sprint in sacrifice to the leader, who carries water and spares, and who rides home alone because they were dropped for not observing the rules. And that's just on a training ride. Never made it past 'loyal domestique' myself...
in CT, i'd say at least 60% wave. (sad, but true, i only wave at 911's and sometimes 944's and 928's). my wife can't stop cracking up when they dont' wave back, but i tell her i have no choice in the matter.
Wow turtle face! I think thats harsh.... If you bag on yourself first does that give you the go ahead to call someone a turtle face! I will try tonight!!!
Like this: I am a disgusting *****!, Yes honey your *** does look fat in those jeans you turtle face!!!
Phil's hand movements in a dark corner - Some might mistake it for something else.
I do keep an eye out for you, but like the Loch Ness Monster your sightings are more myth than reality.
Nick - you are right on the money. We have the same thing here in Park City with cyclists. I have learned to just look "pissed off" and no one messes with me when I ride...
I appreciate the explanation. Maybe I need to learn the game.... Nay, I'll still be just a poser...
-B
I'm glad that you wave, but am bummed that it is down to 60%. I moved away in 1996 so I guess times change. The CVR was a great group of guys. From what I remember most Porsches on the road in CT had CVR stickers on their rear side windows. That was very cool...
-B
I wave at all Porsches even the Cayenne even though it doesn’t have the spirit of the breed. If they don’t wave back for all I care they can eat sh*t and bark at the moon.
Went driving today...waved at everybody...got some very strange looks...the only ones that waved back were the bikers...the wonderful republic of Boulder.
Yeah, well, I went from a wannabee in my 20's to a poser in my 30's to a "I just don't give a **** anymore" in my 40's. Now I'm nearing the end of the 40's and closing in on 50's I'm the complete dork riding along with MTB shoes and pedals on my nice road bike, and calf high white socks (a real cyclist fashion faux pas - gotta wear ankle socks, don't you know). I think the serious guys now cross the road when they see me coming so they don't run the risk of getting associated with me
- Nick
Hey, I'll wave, Bill, on my bike or in the car.
- Nick
FYI - talked to Orrin at Eurosport the other day - gonna get the short shifter installed next Thursday. He told me to be careful I don't catch "mod fever" from you
When I moved to Park City back in 2001, I saw a cool Ralph Lauren RLX bike shirt at one of the high-end ski/bike shops in town. Of course, I bought it and wore it cycling. You would not believe the snickers that I got from other riders at stop lights... My attitude is more "f-them" so I wore it until it faded in the wash... Now I wear the yellow Tour de France jersey and pretend that I am Lance Armstrong. I am a bad *** in my own mind....
-B
sorry this turtle face was because of another tread about how the 996 cab looks like a turtle without a shell....it was never my intention to be mean
...and the fat bastard part was also being sarcastic
....I think all porsche drivers are goodlooking
smart
young
upstanding men!
I think turtles are cute
....and I am married with children and don't do airport bathroom footsies!!
with other men! So no worries Riad!
When I showed this thread to my wife it was like everything made sense again. She said that she always slowed down when driving my car and someone flashed their lights; she assumed there were police ahead... :-)
I also wanted to add that the colour of the car will also make a diff IMHO.
I will notice a Porsche if it is painted correctly, sorry, with a bright colour, well it's either a Porsche or some exotic car in most cases. So if the Porsche is painted black, white or grey it can easily blend in (no offense to those that own these colours), so it might be at the last minute I see you. But I am noticed all of the time wherever I go, driving or just parked, I get a lot of compliments which is satisfying, I even get waves back from my neighbours with the car parked in the garage too
Here in Germany it is easy you can:
1. Not wave and nobody cares
2. Wave and have the other Porsche driver look at you like an idiot and wonder where he knows you from, thus leaving him feeling like an idiot.
ie no wave here
Whats with some of you fella's being so hard on the Boxter croud? Its still a Porsche. It might be the "poor mans Porsche" of todays world. But you shouldn't hate on them, unless they dont wave back. Then throw coffee on them.
You should redirect your hate to the people who drive slow in the wrong lane!
I was recently in Long Island (don't ask) and Boxster S pulled next to me and gave me the big wave, I waved back and say great color I love the Lapis Blue, he said "Thanks man, really appreciate that" and we went our way.
Anyone who is dick enough not to be friendly to another p-car should be driving something else.
If I ever see a CGT owner and wave to him and he doesn't wave back I'm going to smash my 110,000 Porsche into his 400,000 Porsche, life sucks get a helmet.
Rob
Ha - What's funny about Ben's avatar is that he's usng his knuckles to push out his biceps...ooops I mean "guns". I remember doing that when I was 12 or something.
Seriously though Ben, it's good that you've come to realize that being "too cool for school" mens you were just being a ***.
Here's a pic of me, make fun all you want. Notice I am a fat(ish) white guy. I shave my head because I'm pretty bald as well, although the pic doesn't show it. Don't make fun of my old car though....I draw the line there.
S'far as waving goes - we've had this discussion (many times) over on the air cooled board. Say what you will, the newer the car, the less likely the owner will wave back. Probabilities will say that the newer the car the less likely it is that the owner is an enthusiast as well....kinda goes like that.
Well my picture has not been modified, so you are going to either like it or not (probably because of the subject matter), but it is the art work that you should admire...oh and tattoo's do not hurt
Maybe I should use it for my avatar
Here in the midwest, if I see a car painted bright yellow, it's probably a Chevy Cavalier or Colorado pickup or equally boring car. There seems to be no correlation between "bright color" and "semi-exotic car" anymore.
I'm pretty sure Ben was being facetious.....no one really believes that's cool do they?
Speed demons back tatoo on the other hand....now that might intimidate me. Oddly though it turns out he's a full on gentleman. Wierd. I'm confused.
hahaha Phil....yes indeed...your car still looks brand spankin new!!!! Wanna trade for a day? I'll drive yours to fill it up, and you can put unlimited miles and hit the rev limiter on mine!!
J
bro u know i love you like a rennlist brother but u gotta get off this whole silver/black is boring on a porsche tip.
1 yes your car is yellow
2 yes your car is slammed on black w/ polished lip top tier wheels
3 your car has a huge wing on the back with aggressive skirts front and sides
= 4 you will get mad looks regardless of color, **** i'd look at ya ride and give u props
yellow is great like it's great on taxi, buses, rain slicks... u know i like speed yellow, but silver and black are classic colors on any sports car. silver is porsche's motorsport color. yea you right it's common, but it's far from boring.
and believe me if u saw me heading your way, you'd take notice right away
peace,
Actually, just to inject some pedantic fun into this, silver was Germany's "motorsport color" back when F1 teams raced for their countries rather than for sponsors. And green was Britain, and blue was France, and red was Italy... Porsche has no cultural claim on it. BUT, Porsche has made some of the most beautiful automotive silvers ever, and nothing shows of the lines of a 911 quite like it, IMHO, common or not.
Best color = more common color > resale value. I think that math works. Of course when the 996 becomes collectible in the year 2150 I guess the more uncommon colors could bring better resale but till then I think the average person would take silver over yellow.
Of course I have blue so not sure where that puts me
other than in a car I love which most of us do no matter the color.
Back to topic.
I wave at every p-car owner, 944 to 911TT (haven't passed a CGT). I will agree Boxters are the least likely to wave. I just attribute to "there's one in every crowd".
I was bringing my son from his mom's to Rock Hill via I20 in Columbia and a 993 caught up with me. We had a spirited 15 miles on I-20 doing 100+, till he got off. We both honked and waved to each other. What a blast!
I just ignore and snobbery withen p-car land. I think most people own a Porsche for the same reason. the only difference in any of us is how much we want to/can spend on our driving 'dreams'.
I'll also wave at vettes, BMW's, anything where I think the person thinks just like me about his toy. If I meet them, I also always complement their ride and ask many questions about it. Most of the time, they are as enthusistic about their purchase as I am mine. I very much appreciate that!!
Sorry I know this is somewhat off topic:
Thanks...I am a good example of someone that lives an extreme life but is very professional when it comes to work etc.
yeah I got it corrected after I saw the photo
Nope...took the pain like a man
I can understand I see the same vehicles out my way
Ben...trying to see if I can keep everyone on there toes here on rennlist and make this place a bit more exciting, you know what I mean bro this place does get a little boring from time to time
even assuming my guess is even remotely accurate, prolly reflects growing 911 sales and a larger demographic driving these cars, i.e., more mainstream post-yuppie types who don't give a damn buying these cars up. lotta older gents don't wave, equally with younger ones. always funny to get that tentative and a bit surprised wave back from the uninitiated.
And in fact white was Germany's national racing colour, until a 550 spyder needed to shed a few pounds back in the 50's The paint was sanded off, and then it was silver. Wikipedia told me so I *know* it's true.
I have to agree that the newer the model the less attention they pay to other Porsches. I will drive around occasionally in my 58 convertible D and there is a 996 guy in my neighborhood who I swear doesnt even realize they are the same make of car. I try to waive to all other Porsches and hope they will eventually catch on.
Interesting this thread has been revived... I was thinking about this topic this morning. So far this week, I have flashed my lights at two oncoming 993s and didn't get a return flash or wave from either. So I was left wondering whether they were just clueless or didn't acknowledge me because I wasn't drivng a "real" 911?
West Minneapolis area. Pass maybe 3 or 4 p-cars everyday and get 50/50 on the waves. I stopped waving at boxsters because I just started feeling stupid because they never even acknowledge that another p-car is going by.
I was a wanna be,(wanna be from about the age of 4 or 5) my last car was a boxster ...loved it for it's handling. It was really my entry car and never regret the time I had with it. I think my 996 C4 Cab fits me better and is a more elegant car and even I catch myself thinking, it's the real deal. Also, Boxster drew some bad vibes from some drivers, not sure why. 996 always gets respect i.e. - nice ride, love it, can I drive it, etc...
Coming home another 911 flashed a couple of times....as I struggle to find out where the hell the high beam lights where, he was gone. Well, now I now where they are and I hope the Porsche Gods forgive me.
abe
It's interesting the lack of respect the boxster gets.
I was driving with my friend once and a boxster drove by us. He said, "Ha - that guy couldn't afford a 911, so he had to settle on the little boxster. Would you ever want to be seen in a boxster?"
I had to tell him that the boxster was a sweet car and that it was worthy of the Porsche emblem. I would be happy to have a boxster if I wasn't a 911 man. It's not as fast, or expensive, but it's a great car and has truly excellent handling.
I think many people think of it as the poor-man's Porsche, or a wanna-be, so it has an unfortunate image in the minds of the uninformed.
Try being in a 928 and flashing/waving. What I have noticed is the older cars and the track guys are very receptive. They actually are enthusiastic about it.
Peppers.....never........ Boxters, almost never (you can tell when a Boxter owner also has had a previous marqui, they wave and are glad that you did). The 924/944 crowd only seems to see what they can do against the 928 and they barely give a thumbs up/down.
Ahh, being the red headed step child, always fun.
I used to flash and be flashed when I owned my BMW 2002. Now, it's near impossible to get the 65 year old ladies who drive their BMWs to flash, let alone remember what lane they're driving in.
Well, now that I have a 996 I cant wave anymore, I just have to drive around with my cell phone to my ear and that dopey look that the majority of 996/997 owners around here seem to have.
Well, by now you should be expecting it. But what are we going to give you a hard time about in 2008 when you start driving the C4S? I'm going to have to think about that for a while.
O.k., to take this even more to the OT realm - this comment makes me think you watched the Mayweather/Hatton fight.
I'm a big boxing fan and watched with joy as Floyd's
left hook out of nowhere
zapped Hatton in the 10th, sending him head-first into the turnbuckle for his first knockdown. It was right during the annoying song his fans were singing - it was great.
The fight is being replayed tonight on HBO. Oh yeah, watch the British fans boo the National Anthem before the fight.
