I heard that you can't use the litronics on the pre 2002 996's.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi...am a US serviceman currently deployed overseas and am scheduled to return to the US soon the US (within 30day) to my family and I've just been told I am returning to be the now the proud owner of a MY99 996 C2 w/38,000 miles from a local import dealer I've had family and friends who have dealt with before (thanks to the wife). I have a question on upgrades and sorts. 1. Has anybody done xenon upgrades avail for this vehicle? If so what is the usual avg cost and best way to get it done? Also what is the difference between the factory xenons and the xenon bulbs that replace your original H7 bulbs? I heard that you can't use the litronics on the pre 2002 996's. 2. I don't have NAV but would like one. Any thoughts on what is avail from Porsche vs aftermarket and what are the pros and cons price and even availability? I've heard that certain ones will disable certain functions in the onboard computer and you'll get ABS and other false lights on the dash. 3. Aftermarket rims and tires to upgrade to 18" all around, advised or not? I like the OEM Sport Design 18" design too from Porsche? Any thoughts on good online sellers or folks in the Atlantic seaboard/DC Metro/N.VA area? 4. My vehicle has a solid vehicle servicing history (carfax history without incident, service records, etc) and clean. Any thing I should be on the look out for in this particular model year? 5. Any options to add leather to the back seats and carpet area anyone know of? 6. When driving the wife has noted the engine temperature gauge light was flashing when it got to midpoint. approx. 180 degrees but no problems with the car or engine. Ran just fine and went out after the temp went back down. Any thoughts? Thanks....This is an additional vehicle to my '01 BMW 325xi and the wife's ML350 so hopefully it'll be a pleasurable experience for me......can't wait to get home to drive it. Any nasty tendencies to watch out for since I am mostly BMW and Audi driving experience? Will it drive much differently from my ALL wheel drive BMW? :) Md-out!

POST 2Original post

First off congrats brother!! And that wife sure does rock, I got a hammock for father's day 1. The car does not have bi-xenon lights and you want to add them I assume? Not a problem but they are expensive and depending on where you live they are a target for thieves because of their value so think about it... 2. There is a great thread here just posted about a custom nav system installed that looks fantastic. Just look on the upper right hand corner of the screen and you'll see the search link, just type in NAV. 3. I'm also assuming that car currently does not have 18" rims all around... I would strongly recommend getting 18" for both front and rear, plenty of aftermarket choices and you could never go wrong with the Porsche 18" wheels. 4. RMS (Rear Main Seal) check your garage for fluid on the floor every now and then. If you see any take it to the dealer and verify it's not an RMS issue. Again if you search the forum for RMS you'll get forty million pages of information. 5. I'm not sure I understand this question, you don't have leather back seats?? I never heard of that, and as for carpet there are aftermarket companies that make carpet for the 996 so that shouldn't be a problem. 6. Take the car to the dealer sounds like a compression tank leak... very common. The car is out of warranty so I'm not sure of the cost but it's not insane. My guess is that after driving this car for a short period of time it will feel as if your BMW is towing a dump truck. The car is quick and nimble, very tight and perfect line of sight. It's in such a different league than a 3 series bmw that it's unfair to compare them. Best of luck!! And adhere to the first rule of this forum... as soon as you get home post some pictures Come home safe, peace. Rob

POST 7Original post

Excellent post by Riad. As far as leather back seats (item 5), many of the P-cars (including mine) do not have leather back seats. The back seats are immitation leather-- pleather. Unless you got the "full leather" option, you don't have leather back seats, nor do you have leather trim in the front (doors, etc.). The back seats look like leather at quick glance, but feel them and you will see. Pleather. I suppose you could have them re-upholsterd at a leather or furniture place, but this would probably be $$$. Please post if you learn anything. My hat's off to you for serving our country. (where's the smiley face with a salute?) Gary

POST 9Original post

For the NAV system have a look at the Pioneer AVIC-N1 , I had one installed in my 996, fantastic and no probs with existing on board systems. Heres a pic Enjoy the drive!

POST 10Original post

If keeping an OEM look and ease of installation are paramount to you; Harmon Kardon (Becker) makes a stereo with navigation built in (Traffic Pro). You can find it for under $500 at Crutchfield. It is a direct replacement for the basic Porsche stereo. Search this site and renntech.org for more information.
