Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
I conjecture that the cracking is caused by the extreme UV/heat that hits the plastic clearcoat on the steering wheel.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looks typical. Our carbon work exceeds Porsche's standards, and that's why you see what you see. Seems like more and more factory carbon is cracking and yellowing. Shame on Porsche.
Some dealers were replacing it under warranty, but I believe once the first few years pass, that's it, it's your nut. Sucks.
Not easy to repair but can be replaced. Email me with questions anytime:

I notice you have a cabrio and you live in L.A. I conjecture that the cracking is caused by the extreme UV/heat that hits the plastic clearcoat on the steering wheel. The chemical properties vs. appearance and durability of different plastics is always a compromise.
The carbon steering should hold up better in regular coupes because the windshield blocks most of the UV rays.
there is a guy on ebay called ruf_gt2 that does excellent cf work. If you can get a temp wheel, I'm sure he can reapply the CF. He' not cheap, but his work is excellent and I knowitwould be less that buying anew one. No affiliation, I have just had dealings with him.
Oh no, not the scammer ruf_gt2. There are HORROR stories about this guy. He has several eBay names and has screwed alot of poeple. His other "main" name was "dedoonewhila" till he moved over to one of his many others. Do a search and you will find a bunch of unhappy people.
I am sure you (smshirk) may of had a goof dealing with him, but there are so many bad stories about this guy that the red flags are not worth it.
I sure wasn't aware of it. I had him make me a couple of things. He does laminating type work and started this CF thing on the side. I do know about dedoonewhila but had no idea they were the same. Here are the sills he made for me.
in context - the English made wood dashboards for 80 years and never really perfected the art of high heat resistance until the 21st century. Look at the dashes of any old Jag or whatever and they all had cracks from heat stress.
hmmm - i think thats because they were so insular they did not consider the heat in the US market
never seen cracked wood on a jag in the UK - speeaking as a brit!
