Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had a high pitch whine coming from the back-end so I dropped it off at the shop. Not the dealer... a shop I trust and have used for years.
He tells me Porsche doesn't sell the tranny parts so they can't rebuild. A new/rebuilt tranny is about $5k. My car has been out of warranty for about 8 months or so. Gear oil was change last summer (2004) with Mobil-1. The car has seen moderate track duties.
Options? Solutions? Suggestions?
Which Mobil gear oil did you use? You can't buy the correct one in the States. If you used the wrong one, why not get the SHELL lube from Porsche for $90 and try changing it. It possibly could correct your symptoms.
Also, your transmission can be rebuilt. Have your shop look into it a little more. The big issue is that the gears/sycros/etc are pressed on so you need a big press to work on them. There are a few shops that do it now though and most of the parts are available. When I broke my tranny case in a crash, I bought a used case and had the insides rebuilt. I don't remember the name of the shop but it might be in an old thread.

I've checked with 2 local Porsche shops and they both tell me the same thing... no rebuilds. Only swap for new or rebuilt from Porsche.
If you have ANY info, please pass it along. I would appreciate it.
well the tranny cost is one thing, but replacement with labor and tax adds up.. mine came to $8,500 out the door for replacement... couldn't find anyone that would even touch it.. and used prices weren't much better than a rebuild one.. nice thing about a rebuilt is atleast you have a 2 year warranty... sucks.. i know..
Have you called Sunset Imports in Beaverton, Oregon? They will sell you a factory rebuilt transmission for cost + 15% and you could have it shipped to an independent mechanic or your local dealer. On big ticket items like engines and transmissions the savings can be close to 50%!
Well... I wasn't in the best of moods yesterday and I was trying to think of how or why this happened. Then it dawned on me... I had a small fender bender on Easter this year where a guy hit my right rear wheel and fender. The fender was replaced as was the wheel. The shop put the car on the alignment rack and fram machine and it came out fine. So I figured the wheel damage was just cosmetic and never thought the force was transfered to the drivetrain.
So I told my mechanic about it and he said "Now this makes more sense. All your noise is coming from the right side!" So he suggested that I contact the insurance company again. I told him I had finished/closed my claim so how can I go back and tell them something else was wrong.... 8 months and 7k miles later?
So I'm not sure if this will fly or not but it's worth a shot. I was told I have 2 years on property damage claims. I just see this as being a battle BUT at this point I have nothing to lose.
For Porsche, the 996 gear box is a closed system. There are no diagrams, manuals, or parts available. So for a dealer, it is intended to be a swap one for one. There are some aftermarket shops as stated that can help as they have taken them apart and learned from there. They are not cheap, and you will be left in the same spot.
Contact the insurance company, if a certified mechanic confirms that the damage is related to the hit, the insurance company has to comply.
I was in a similar situation a couple of years back with my previous car. Hit a curb, had insurance cover the damage to the wheel, control arm, etc. About a year later wheel bearing on the same wheel started making noise. My wrench suggested I call my insurance company and ask them WHY they didn't replace the bearing, etc. Long story short, the insurance company paid for bearings on BOTH sides
with the tranny in order to receive the special price without paying $13,000 for a new or rebuilt one, you have to give them the core.. so unless you live close to portland, or want to ship your car to portland, and let them take out the core and keep it.. that won't work.. besides, ever tried shipping a transmission? it'll be cheaper to get one from your local dealer than shipping one <g>
it works just like the engine.. without the core.. you will pay more than twice as much.. and if you bring it to an independant repair shop, you don't have the 2 year warranty.. which isn't worth saving a few hundred dollars imho..
It is mine....tried to play chicken with the tirewall in turn 5 at VIR...
Going back this weekend with Carolinas to get revenge
PS. Haven't seen you at the track in a bit, congrats on the Club Race!
Ouch! You Dorki boys play hard! Glad to know you're okay. How's the 996 treating you? Is that what you're taking to the CMP? I need to get down there some day.
