Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. In all seriousness, I installed the aero kit for 3 simple reasons.
Leading evidence: 'Install aero kit' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean ones out there' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

If you think there are some clean ones out there that look good, can you post some pics?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is having a body kit on a 996 carrera "ricey". I just want your opinions guys, yes or no. If you think there are some clean ones out there that look good, can you post some pics? Thanks.
For the most part, if something doesn't improve performance (without ruining the ride) -- it's largely b.s. Use the money to go to a good driving school. Take an interesting vacation. Adding a body kit is just a stupid "look at me" ploy. Screams insecurity.
It's not that I wouldnt be wasting money. There's a guy selling a 996 mk1 carrera with a gt3 kit on it already. I'm kinda skeptical on it. Not sure if I should get it. That's why I ran it by you guys for opinions. The cars in great shape, decent miles and all that, just wasn't sure if the kit would consider it riced out.
my car came with an "aero kit" already on it (TECHART front lip, side skirts, rear bumperettes and tail) and YES, I think it makes the car look better and NO, I really do not mind what others think of it.
P.S. After I found how much $$$ Techart pieces cost, I really got to like my car a whole lot more.
An aero kit is not rice - it's a piece of OEM performance equipment. Whether you like it or not is another matter. Most Porsche enthusiasts like the aero kit and it adds a degree of rarity to your car - expensive equipment that most appreciate.
My 996 came like this when I bought it. I think you can personalize your car by adding some nice rims and aero pieces. Mine did not have the fixed wing, but I have often thought of adding one...i just have other priorities. I dont track it yet, so no huge advantage for me in that aspect of the performance.
Hmmm, maybe buying a Porsche without tracking it screams insecurity too? Why would you need all that performance otherwise?
I don't think there is anything bad with having a nice looking car. Personally I like the aero kit on the Carrera.
Robert
Yup! Agreed.
Firstly. the Aero kit does give performance improvements at higher speeds (do you really think Porsche would spend so much time in the wind tunnel making aero kits for all of their cars if that were not the case?). Additionally, IMHO the aero kit makes the 996 a better looking car
Many would argue that all Porsche owners need male enhancement. Making blanket statements like that would certainly seem insecure and judgmental.
Yes, really. You cannot legally use even a small fraction of the capability of a Porsche on the road, so why would you buy one if you were not putting it on the track? If that doesn't scream of posing and insecurity, what does?
I personally don't put my car on the track, so conclude what you will.
In all seriousness, I installed the aero kit for 3 simple reasons. i) It is a performance aid at high speeds. ii) it makes the car look better. iii) Aero kit cars generally command higher resale values than non-aero cars.
Three good reasons in my mind. Others may not appreciate those reasons, but they are valid and a like the look on my car, so that's all I need.
I personally think that your opinion has little substance to back it up and could probably point to many options in your car that fall into that category. Want to take that Pepsi challenge?
An aero kit in its very definition is for AERODYNAMICS. Therefore, unless you need more downforce, whats the purpose of putting it on other than asthectics? If you want your car to look 'cool' knock yourself out. It simply states you want a 'look' which usually means there is no substance other than looks (see definition of poser)
As for a Porsche being under utilized for everyday street use, sure, so is EVERY other car made today. They can all go faster than the legal limit so I guess all the folks driving Honda Accords and minivans bought them just be cool.
Get the car with the best PPI, aero kit or not. You can swap out a deck lid any time. If the car is otherwise solid, and well maintained go fo it..IMHO
I like the aerokit and wish my car had one. I do think they made some subtle changes to the MKII models to make them look a bit better in stock form but the aerokit really does enhance the car's appearance in my opinion.
I don't know if I'll ever get to the point of installing one just because they are expensive and aside from looks do very little for a car like mine. If my car were a dedicated track car though it would make sense. But for a few DEs a year and given that mine is convertible I'd rather spend the money on other mods.
As 996_North said, a PPI is most important.
I suspect that most aero kits add weight, increase drag, scrape on steep driveways, add unnecesary expense and might even make your car stand out more to the local constable. I hear some of them have the secret code stamped on the inside "EYIR."
Embrace Your Inner Ricer.
But only the best ones.
Whoa I'm not a ricer. The car has a full gt3 kit wrap around. I didn't do any of the work. It's fitted on very good. It looks clean. I like it. But like I said its the fact that it's dressed up to look like a gt3 kind of bothers me because it won't perform like one. If I do buy the car I will track it though.
You asked for opinions, so you're getting mine.
I'm not a fan, I look at body kits and think they almost always look bulky, often times ricey. Rarely do I look at a 996 with extra body panels and think it looks any good.
OK, the GT3 gets away with it because of the stance mostly, and because of course its the real deal.
But even then the taco wing never sat right with me. I'm more of an ironing board man.
As has been said though...my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.
It's what you like that matters. For every guy like me that doesn't like it there's another guy that does. We cancel each other out.
Then it can't hurt you, with regard to downforce, that is.
I hear ya on the "dressed up like one / doesn't perform like one" thing. I'd feel the same way.
If a car comes with something on it, eh, what're ya gonna do? I looked specifically for a car that didn't have any ad-ons. That said, if the car IS a GT3 or TT, etc.... I think they look bad-***!!!
I was faced with exactly the same dilema a few months back. 2002 C2 dressed up with a GT3 kit - or so the owner told me.
All the cars I've owned have always had a "sleeper" look.
At the end of the day it's your call.
I bought the car simply beacuse there are very few where I live and this is the only Manual one in the country - again so I believe.
You can always swap back to a stock look if you don't like it.
