POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just got back from a little run with my friend. We were just crusing on the highway and i was wondering what my car with 111K miles and a leaky engine was capable of... so we whipped out the camera and had some fun... the thing got to 160 pretty quickly and the it seemed to just jump up to 170 and me finally letting go of the gas pedal at 174mph.... i was so damn impressed that the car with that much milage still had it in it... i have a video and im trying to post it on utube so u can all see... o and don't mind the language its an inside joke between my friend and i because he is half black so im really sorry if i hurt or offended someone with what was said i don't mean it offensivly and im just used to saying to him.... i tried to bleep it out but i have no video editing skills.

POST 2Original post

174 on the highway would probably get you arrested! These cars are impressive though! "111k miles and leaky engine" should probably NOT make it into the "for sale" ad!

POST 3Original post

OK.....you must have had that car flat out! You are going to get some flaming for your open admissions.....lol.....I don't mind though. Interested in seeing a link to your video. Any shaking of the wheel at that speed?? J

POST 4Original post

I'd like to see the video too (no lecturing from me either, but you are brave. I can't imagine how much trouble you would've been in had you been caught).

POST 5Original post

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxy_UITRd-c

POST 6Original post

From the video it looks like you did this at night!?! No lectures, but you are a candidate for a Darwin award.

POST 7Original post

WOWWWWWW.....that's insane....others on the road too!!! and in the dark???? You guys get the award for sickos of the week, no the month...no....the year. Very fun to watch.....but totally insane. J

POST 8Original post

May I ask how old you are? . . . just curious ?

POST 9Original post

Holy Cow. Darwin Award, I agree, but that took *****.

POST 10Original post

What I love is the two lights - Check Engine and Seatbelt! No seatbelts at 170mph? Folks, we may have more than just a candidate...we've got a winner!

POST 11Original post

Ahhh! i was wondering what the other light was.... hands down winner on that one!

POST 13Original post

How about changing the music at 170 mph? Braver than me, for sure. He11, I'd be hanging on tight at the track at that speed.

POST 14Original post

Yeah.. I just watched this and thought, nothing good will come of that. Not the brightest stunt to pull on a public road, regardless of hour or visibility. So your lights would have given you, what.. a microsecond of warning if something was in the road?

POST 15Original post

you know better than to post this and not expect any "negative" feedback. I will keep my comments to myself because I am no saint....and because I am battling a completely undeserved ticket in Utah during One Lap...the cop "clocked" me at 148mph on a 70mph. The worst part is that I was not going ANYWHERE in that range...but got passed as if I were standing still by someone...so I am sure they got the reading on someone else. Say....where you in Utah on June 6th????????????? LOL!!

POST 16Original post

GEEEEZ!!! You sure got away lucky... Say, do you plan on pulling another one in daylight, just so we can see how fast the surrounding blows by?

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

sorry it took me so long to reply but thanks for all the comments..... Yeah i know im insane but what u going to do ... to awsners some questions no there wasn't really any shaking (it shook more at 160-167 then it did after that) yeah it was like 2 in the morning when i did it... what u expect me to do this in heavy traffic .... yeah the check engine light is always on... its for an emisson leak my car has and i got it fixed but the light stays on for like a week and then turns off... i don't get it... i swear i wasn't in utah anytime recently... ... ummm i don't think ill be doing this again anytime soon but who know lol i might get carried away one day .... o and i recently was arrested for speeding 45 over the limit so im under supervison... i think i need some help with my speeding addiction... and the car is a 6 speed manual and i had to shift from 5th to 6th at 147mph... that was most likely the fastest i had ever shifted... all i have to say the car really suprised me how quickly it got to that speed and the fact that it still went that speed... i did all u a service just to show u guys how great our cars are... 111k miles and a rms leak won't slow the car down one bit.. cheers to all of us for owning the greatest cars ever made ........... o and im 17 years old if u guys wanted to know.... don't judge i actully paid for most of the car.... and all the recent repairs... (water pump, clutch, emisson leak.)

POST 19Original post

I was young and stupid too; just too poor to own a car... maybe I'd be dead now. Don't think about killing yourself, you're incapable of thinking of consequences at such a young age, but perhaps contemplate killing someone else and having to live with that guilt the rest of your life. If you can afford a Porsche then you can afford to take it to the track.

POST 20Original post

The sad thing is that criticizing this kid is only going to make him more pleased with himself. The risk to himself, his passenger and everyone else is worse than just criminal. It's a possible felony given the radical nature of the act. And don't worry about the seatbelt light. While it may have been a malfunction and his belt fastened, at those speeds it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

POST 23Original post

What a friggin idiot. At least do this by yourself on an empty road, so when you crash you'll only kill your idiot self. If I was a Moderator, I would ban any child that posted such ridiculously unsafe videos. Do we really need kids like this in here?

POST 24Original post

I've done equally dumb things in my teens, like driving my step-mom's Mercedes at 140 mph on the highway back in the early 80's with 3 of my buddies in the car, so I'm not going criticize this guy. I'm blessed and fortunate to still be alive given some of the acts of stupidity in my younger days. I really gave my guardian angel a work out. Luckily, I came to my senses before my guardian angel was forced into early retirement . Oscypek, I can relate to your insanity, but we all want you to live long enough to die of natural causes. PLEASE get in a DE program to 1) learn how to be a better driver and 2) get your "need for speed" out of your system in a controlled and safe environment. You can do things on the track that you could never do on a public road in a much safer environment. Many professional race car drivers (and many of us non-professionls) have mundane sedans and SUV's, not sports cars, for daily drivers. The reason? Driving fast on public roads isn't as satisfying (or safe) as driving fast on the track.

POST 25Original post

If each generation was not held to a higher standard of intelligence than the last, evolution would have ground to a halt a hundred thousand years ago. I certainly didn't use my conduct as a kid as the standard by which I raised my own. Just sayin'...

POST 26Original post

My main issue with this is that there are other cars on the road. A 17 year old kid just doesn't know how to drive very well, despite what he may think. Ayrton Senna, Dale Earnhart, Stefan Bellof, and endless other actually talented drivers, are all dead while driving in vehicles with all the latest safety equipment and on actual race tracks. A 17 year old kid driving 170mph for kicks down the highway is putting many people in real danger. Imagine some car looks in the mirror and sees headlights way back there and moves into the passing lane to get around another car, then gets slammed into from behind by some kids - then that's it - two dead kids in a Porsche, and a dead family in a mini-van. Everyone thinks they are invincible when they are young, and that all the older people are boring and don't know how to have fun, but when you get older and more experienced you realize you owe it to everyone else to be responsible. I used to do stupid things when I was 17, also. I had a very, very fast 69 Cutlass that was sooped-up and I used to race that thing around all the time with a load of friends in the car. I thought I knew how to drive and all that stuff, but as I got older I looked back and thought "holy crap I'm lucky to be alive with those stunts I pulled". Unfortunately you can't talk sense into kids, they have to grow up on their own and get wiser- hopefully before they kill themselves or someone else.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

damn made some people mad on here... yeah i know what i did was a huge risk to me, my friend, and the two cars that were on the freeway, but im not sorry for what i did.... im sorry it might have pissed u off but im not on here to get anyones approval. also most of u have been extremely quick to judge. LiveNupe i am actully trying to get into racing on the track and am doing my first autocross event tomorrow ... ive been talking with the people at euroquip and trying to get them to set me up with this track meet they have over the summer where they actully have instructers so i can get better at what i want to do..... im not going to lie i have takin this car to high limits before (never that high and never during traffic) and i totally understand what could have happened to me, this is why i want to start track racing and why i am going to. what i did was dumb for a short period of time, when i was 13 my dad and i drove up from clearwater florida to my house in des plaines il in 13 hours, the needle on his sl500 never dropped below 130mph unless we had to get gas. to me that is just completely stupid and i am lucky to still be here after that. what im trying to say with that statement is yeah just like livenupe i can't help my self and do dumb **** sometimes but at least i try to keep it as controlled as possible and at least im using the right equipment and not some crappy civic with 15in narrow tires that would pop at thoughs speeds sending me into a spin. gary mermel i know the seatbelt would make no difference at thoughs speeds thats why i didn't put it on. ElTorrente yeah i totally dragged my friend and told him he had to go with me, and the two cars on inside lanes of the highway were totally going to hit me and i missed them by two inches but it jsut added to the effect.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i don't think im an amzing driver or anything of that nature, i know im still just learning of what a car can do.... i understand what u mean about endangering other people on the highway ... anyone that has driven on highway 355 toward naperville il know how huge the high way is... i was all the way on the outside and the two car i passed where all the way to the left and i was whatching them like a hawk... yeah i know my car could have spun and taken them out or they could have suddenly dove into my lanes but i was willing to take the risk because the risk of all that happening wasn't that great...... look im sorry i pissed people off and i don't want to start any fights, im a friendly guy with no enemies (well up untill now....) i did what i did and i totally understand how u guys could be mad. i don't take huge risk every single day of my life and i don't think im god, i think things through before i do them, but im also not going to be scared of everything and hide in a corner. i have to go now but again im sorry i pissed u guys off that wasn't my intention at all. but again im not sorry for what i did. PS whats funny up until i told u guys my age u guys where applauding me for my action and asking me to do that again... hmmmm....

POST 29Original post

Your seatbelt would make a difference. If you had a blow-out or had to swerve and lost it and rolled, you wouldn't get thrown from the car and would at least have a chance. If you think what your Dad did was "completely stupid", then you should learn from that. I went 150mph+ last year, because I wanted to cross that magical barrier, but I did it on a completely empty road by myself - but believe me I understand the lure of doing something like that. I knew that if I crashed, I would only hurt myself and took that risk on my own. Now that you've gone that fast, you don't need to keep doing it - do you? You got the video and the knowledge that you broke the 170 barrier, so hopefully you'll keep it in check. Going that fast repeatedly is just asking for trouble. Not to mention of course, that if the cops catch you doing it- you are gonna lose that car and will be talking to a judge who won't think 170mph is as cool as you do. You are doing the right thing by considering track driving. Go to a track and learn how to handle it and drive the way it was meant to be. You'll have a blast and will become an infintely better driver than you are now, and will continue to improve over time. We are giving you a hard time because we SHOULD give you a hard time. We aren't a bunch of old dorks who don't like to push our cars, it's just that we have the life wisdom under our belts and feel obligated to steer younger people in the right direction. Seriously - we know you feel invincible and nothing can happen to you, but that's what everyone thinks when they are young, yet thousands upon thousands die every year on the roads anyway, and you can bet that 99.99999% of them were going slower than 170mph, and most at least had their seatbelts on.

POST 30Original post

I don't think we were applauding you at all in this thread. Driving that speed on a highway is moronic at any time of day. At night you cannot see what is about to jump out into your path (think animal, or any other slow moving obsticle). In hitting an unseen hazard you would have killed yourself and anyone else in the path of your out of control car. Sure, you may have no respect for your life, but I care more about the other people that might be on the road at the same time as you. If you want to drive those speeds go to the track. If you don't think that speed kills in the hands of people like you I'll refer you to the case of Nikki Catouras - 18 years old when she died. Silly girl. http://www.snopes.com/photos/accident/alton.asp Google her name and you'll see the photos that show the mess she made of herself when her daddy's Carrera went out of control in her inexperienced hands. You're 17 years old and do not have the seat time to have good judgement. If you live long enough you might gain some, but I think that you should start working on getting some common sense first. It's plain and simple, a car is a weapon and it can kill. Your life is expendible, as you've achieved nothing with it yet. In the scheme of things you're a nobody - a blank page waiting to be written. You can chose to continue to be a stupid nobody, or you can chose to contribute to society with something good. I'd prefer that you don't kill others that might have done more for those around them than yourself.

POST 31Original post

Sorry. I don't think there is a chance at 170 miles per hour. Seat belt, no seat belt, you're toast. The advantage to the seat belt is that below a point (say 100 mph??) it WOULD make a difference, and he was there as he sped up and again as he slowed down. My comment was meant to be sarcastic, and I don't know which smiley says that. As for doing anything on a public road, at 150 mph you're traveling 2.5 miles each minute. No way you can say you were on a "completely empty road". It may been empty to your sight lines. But at those speeds your sight lines ain't really worth a lot. I don't mean to seem so judgmental, but these are PUBLIC safety issues. These types of actions have ramifications for people and property besides the perpetrator. I was in a near head-on accident (car totalled, but my evasion minimized any injuries. It was the real thing) last month because an impaired driver came around a bend in my lane. She might have had a mental condition, and that's life. But if it was drugs or alcohol I'd have been another "damn her for being so irresponsible" tragic and unnecessary statistic....

POST 32Original post

I saw these same pictures of Nikki in February which included the ones of what was left of her, what a mess and a waste. OK I will admit I have been at speeds in excess of 165 mph a few times on the motorways, but it has been in a car that I owned for several years and so I knew it inside and out, it also had a lot of safety pieces added (full roll cage, racing seats, 5-way harness, etc., etc.). But anything can happen on public roads so it is not adviseable no matter what you have or how old you are, but at 17 it is definately the wrong thing to do. Like other said before, go to the track (which I noticed you will be doing - that is good). Also I am not applauding you for doing it, and you did the wrong thing by posting a video of it. Keep that video for private viewing only or else it could get you in a lot of trouble. If you needed the video to prove that you went that fast you didn't, you know these P cars can do it, so if you told us we would believe you (you still would get some verbal bashing though). If you owned a Pontiac Aztec and told us you went 174 then we would want to see proof (this time you would definately get verbally abused but we would hve been amazed). So grow-up, get to the track and live life to the fullist. Don't let your friends lead you to believe this is fun as it is not! All this coming from "The Speed Demon"

POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

trust me i don't think im im untouchable or a god at driving or anything like that... this is why i want to find an instructer and have some fun and learn the limits of my car in a safe place ( i also know that even though ill be on a track there is still a risk but at least its extremly on the minimal)..... and yes i don't plan on doing something like that anytime soon i just need to try it and it also boosted my confidence in the car since i thought that it most likely wasn't what it used to be but now i see that i was wrong. i was actully looking to get rid of it once i cleaned it up a bit and get an audi s4 but now i don't even want to look at the audi.... i wasn't trying to show off what the car can do, that wasn't my intention, i just need to know my car was still what it was ment to be..

POST 35Original post

speed demon is right, hope the highway patrol doesn't come after you...lesson learned

POST 36Original post

Good for you for top ending your car - I'm looking for an opportunity to do the same. You pretty much have to do this on the public roads because there are precious few, if any, tracks which have straight stretches long enough. I never understod it when people say you shoud take your car to the track to see how fast it goes....where do you live, LeMans? Plus which I think the track marshall would kick you off if you went 175 mph in a stock car on street tires. Now about that seatbelt story - "I knew it wouldn't help so I didn't put it on." Yeah - sorry chuck: u R stoopid...probably not the kind of guy who should be driving 175. No sense. But whatever, it's your life. I dare you to do it with bare feet...or maybe with a blindfold on - that would make a cool video!

POST 37Original post

I'm not all that much older than you, and all I can say is that you obviously lack the emotional maturity to perceive risk. The top speed run isn't all that dangerous, but the fact that you drive around without a seat belt, and obviously rather aggressively makes you rather stupid. Prime reason why kids shouldn't be given high powered cars.

Having had the misfortune to be involved in a number of nasty crashes (only once at my own hand) I put on a seat belt to move my car out of the garage. Not wearing one for whatever rationalization does not seem too bright. I'll admit that I used to push the limits on the highway when I was younger, despite my ignorance of consequence I was lucky to live as long as I have. Knowing what I know now I would not have done those things. I save my speed release for tracks. As many have said.. get some driver's Ed and keep the pedal off the metal until on a closed course.

POST 39Original post

Did you try with the headlights off too? Just curious!!

POST 40Original post

Everyone is talking about letting it out on the track....which I have done as well,...so was wondering...and not trying to be a wise guy...but how fast do you get your machines up to when you drive in a spirited mood on the street? Does anyone hit triple digits often on the road? Where I live, if you go slower than 80 on the thruway....it feels like you'll get rear ended...no traffic of course. So quick bursts that hit trips are not so rare for me, but not much over that, and never for extended periods. j J

POST 41Original post

Short bursts of speed happen... you get it going on the highway at 120 then slow down... but 170, at night, no seatbelt, passenger, radio playing, and video taping it? Come on.

POST 43Original post

I'm fairly sure that every single one of us has had a time when they've done something really stupid in a car at least once and are fortunate enough to still be around. Some will admit to it and other won't, but not everone is so lucky to have the choice. I had some good friends that fit into the latter catagory. Sure, it's a lot of fun at the time even if you knew how wrong or dangerous it was. All eveyone here is trying to do is look out for you with the benefit of their experience and try to avoid you being someone elses memory. All that I will add is this: Remember this thread, maybe print it out now and keep it. If you get the chance, look back on it in fifteen years and see how your opinion has changed.

POST 44Original post

We SoCal people have no choice... everyone else drives 10-15mph BELOW the speed limit for no f'in reason.

POST 45Original post

Agreed! Then also ban all smokers or people who post videos about smoking. Chill ElTorrente, whilst I also don't condone this type of action, jumping straight onto the 'moderator ban' bandwagon is a little too much.

POST 46Original post

All it took me to start wearing my seat belt was totalling my BMW at 20 years old and hitting my head on the rearview mirror and then the window. Sometimes people have to learn the hardway. I always tell my kids that the primary flaw with humans is that they have to learn the hardway and are bad about taking good advice. I occasionally run up my car early weekend mornings to 120 as I enter an otherwise empty freeway and then let the car wind down by itself. 170 is nuts and his parents should not have given him a 911. I have taken my car up to 155 in west texas on a very empty and flat highway. We are talking about a part of our country with no other cars in sight and hours on hours without seeing another car. But it is a risk because of the wild life. Just look at your insurance, it says high performance for a reason.

POST 47Original post

Lord help us. Having a Porsche is like owning a handgun - you're only supposed to fire it at the range. Then some jackass kid comes along and starts shooting up your neighborhood.

POST 48Original post

Good...just checking about the sprints in the triple digits.....didn't think I was the only one! Yes....even on a clear path...I don't like going past 120, but in this new (to me) c4s...it's almost too easy. I can reach 100 without even trying....just happens. 4th gear is incredibly strong. J

POST 49Original post

^ +1. Short bursts in appropriate traffic. I'm never in triple digits for more than a very short period of time. I have a rule of never driving faster than conditions will let you see and react - that means speed only comes when I can see far ahead on a quiet road and have time to react to anything unexpected. In hitting speeds that let you cover a mile in a minute (or less), then you have to be able to see a couple of miles ahead.

POST 50Original post

With all said, I am glad to know that my car is capable of hitting those speeds. Up until I read this thread I wasn't so sure - just the other day I hit 120 on a secluded road and the car started vibrating like crazy. Maybe it's my tires...

POST 51 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah no real vibration at thoughs speeds... i mean the camera man was scared so that why the camera was jumping up and down but for some reason as soon as i past 166 the car got extremely stable and didn't vibrate almost at all...it was actully kind of eerie... i thnik it might just be downforce or something but yeah. o and before anyone ask the car is stock outside of window tint and smoked side markers... which add at least 30-40 hp to the wheels.... yeah and i don't go driving 100mph every chance i get but im not going to lie if the road is clear and i feel like road conditions are ok (not wet, or dusty etc..) i will have some fun but just for a short burst and then chill out...

POST 52Original post

I am happy that Los Angeles is a long ways from Des Plaines. We are chock full of morons here and don't need any more. I was unimpressed and disappointed by your activities and your thread without watching the video and without knowing your age. I think you're one of the reasons that many non-Porsche owners hate Porsche owners.

POST 53Original post

Better sooner than latter get those codes checked on that cel.

POST 54Original post

Thumbs Up for having the ***** to admit it. Thumbs down for being so ignorant and careless in public. Youth and wisdom will never be friends, but ignorance and stupidity are your brothers. Having over 400hp at the wheels and a diff rear gear, I am sure I could close on 200mph, but I just don't think I'll try that. Put this on your visor next time you want to be such an ******* on the streets:

POST 55 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah the cel comes on for like a a week and then turns off and comes back its really annoying i already had it checked out and the dealer "fixed it" but yeah im going back to either get my money back or make them fix it right. o and the whole seatbelt issue... when i did this my girl was in the philipines and well when she got back and she saw the video.... yeah my seatbelt stays on even when im just sitting in the car.... she scares me don't tell her i said that ....

POST 56Original post

Damn Wellard, this is not the first time I saw those pics, and I couldn't get it out of my head for a week. The really graphic photos are hard to find because they are so tragic, but this is the kind of thing that makes me slow down. If I hadn't seen "wheels of tragedy" in high school I might be dead too. Oscypek, do yourself a favor and look for the other photos. They are too graphic to post on Rennlist, so please don't try.

POST 57Original post

Glad that you appreciate them. I kept a link to her story, as there's always someone around that needs reminding of what happens when you push up the speed too far. It's easy to make a dumb decision to push the speed too far and in a split second you and people around you can be dead. No turning back on a bad hair day like that.

POST 58Original post

"bad hair day???" I don't know whether to throw up or laugh... or both...

POST 59Original post

Yeah, I know. I thougt of that image after I wrote it, but it seemed appropriate, so I kept it in the message.

POST 60Original post

Guess my problem with this kid is his total disregard for others. Sure, it's his life and if he kills himself and his friend, that's his choice, we won't mourn him much. The real tragedy will happen when there's a stalled car by the side of the road with no lights, with a young mother and her children in it, or some old guy walking along in the dark. Yeah, he claims he was careful and there were no other cars on the road. Truth is there is NO WAY you can safely drive at 170mph on a public highway. Anyone who believes otherwise is fooling himself.

POST 61Original post

Glad that kid does not live in the Dallas area!

POST 63Original post

Don't forget he is selling the car now, I hope bringing this thread back to life doesn't interfere with that

POST 64Original post

It cant interfere, because he started another one!....

POST 65Original post

At least he wasn't "text-messaging" at those speeds Save the triple digit high speed driving for the track or salt-flats. John

POST 66Original post

I didn't see that he was selling the car - must have missed that thread. Hope he fixed the check engine light.

POST 67Original post

You read my mind, this thought continually made its way through my head as I read through op's juvenile posts.

POST 68Original post

i agree ... i was that stupid at that age, but no money at all ... i had a used beetle VW ... i did the same crazy things with my small car ... had a good time ....
