Reported cause

One person claimed this was due to people comparing their guage readings, then complaining to the dealership that their neighbor was running at lower temps/higher oil pressure than their car....or getting freaked when they saw coolant temps run higher on hot days in traffic.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is it normal for the oil temp to go all the way up to "5" when at full throttle? What should it be at while cruising?

POST 2Original post

That's not temp it's pressure. Do a forum search and you will find lots of postings on oil pressure.

POST 3Original post

What you are seeing is pressure not temp. and yes under cold morning starts and WOT the oil pressure is going to be high. At normal cruising speeds the pressure should be some where in the middle.

POST 4Original post

Yup, thats not the oil temp. You're looking at the pressure gauge. at cold starts, it will stay at 5 until the oil warms up, then it vary with your engine RPM from 2bars at idle to 5bar at anything over 3500rpm for me.

POST 5Original post

One source of confusion in recent years comes from American car companies creating "central tendency guages." In effect, the guage always reads in the middle of the range, except when the temp/press gets dramatically out of range. In effect, guages on most American cars have become idiot lights in the form of a guage. One person claimed this was due to people comparing their guage readings, then complaining to the dealership that their neighbor was running at lower temps/higher oil pressure than their car....or getting freaked when they saw coolant temps run higher on hot days in traffic. (How is this POSSIBLE!?) For some reason, Porsche thinks that more accurate information can be used by intelligent people. (Go figure.....) Anyway, while your guages have more informative readouts, recognize that between cars, differences within manufacturing tolerances can produce slightly different readings (as these are just daily guages rather than diagnostic quality readouts). So, your readings may be slightly different than the next guy's, even if the actual conditions in your engine are the same. That said, you do need to keep track of whether you're looking at coolant temp, oil pressure, etc.

POST 6Original post

You mean like the Porsche coolant temperature idiot light that reports the temperature as 175F even if it is actually 220F? I guess this is a gauge for for the intelligent drivers? Even the oil pressure gauge if way off as far as reporting accurate oil pressure. It is consistant and does increase and decrease on the scale as pressure changes, but it is hardly accurate in reporting the absolute oil pressure. The fact is, if you want accurate gauge readings, you'll have to spend alot more money than Porsche or any other auto manufacturer is willing to invest in their cars. Porsche makes only 1 accurate gauge, and that is the clock.
