i've been reluctant to change also because the stock shifter doesn't seem that bad to me.

Suggestion

Using the "heartbeat" heistation in my opinion negates the need for a short shifter, because it's not about speed or distance travelled, it's more about smoothness and precision.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just saw an ad in the latest Christophorus, Porsche is now offering a Tequipment short shift kit for 986/996. Anyone have any additional information or details?

POST 2Original post

Yes it is the same design as the B&M SSK but in black instead of Blue. It will also cost you tripple to have it in black! http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p96139.htm

POST 4Original post

Does it really make such a difference? If so, why is it not standard? Any downsides? Spizz

POST 5Original post

I believe the downside is an increase in shifting effort.

POST 6Original post

Triple the price for black! Gee Porsche will never shift them

POST 7Original post

I have driven stick shifts all my life, and I'm of the opinion that the SSK does nothing for the 996. I'm taking it out of mine and going back to the original. I'm aware that others rave about it.

POST 9Original post

I have heard that Foreign Affairs Motorsports has the best prices...

POST 10Original post

I saw those pix in Christophorus and was really surprised by the difference, especially in the 2 right pix, showing 3rd & 4th gear w/ and w/o the short shifter. Sure looks like more than a 35% reduction, doesn't it?

POST 11Original post

colm why don't you like your short shifter? i've been reluctant to change also because the stock shifter doesn't seem that bad to me. perhaps i'm just used to it.. or cheap

POST 12Original post

When it is an option Porsche claims 35%. The Porsche installation instructions claim 37%. B&M claims 35%. If you go to the link I measured 36.85% on a C4S. The 2004 Boxster special edition claims 15% so it will be interesting to see what is in that car when I get my hands on one.

POST 13Original post

Yes Colm - very interested. I like the feel of the standard unit - but everyone suggests that Shirt Shift is the one mod you should make. Spizz

POST 14Original post

Here is the picture that Tool Pants took of the C4S SSK. You will notice that the First picture is of the stock shifter.

POST 16Original post

There are some gearboxes designed to "snick, snick" when you shift. These tend to be very fast. The Porsche box is not one of them and to me it always feels notchy, you still get the best shifts (and fastest), even with the SSK using what I call "heartbeat" hesitation between the gears. Using the "heartbeat" heistation in my opinion negates the need for a short shifter, because it's not about speed or distance travelled, it's more about smoothness and precision. At the PDE they don't put in the short shifter, but they do put on the sport exhaust. That might be the one mod to have!
