I replaced the battery AGAIN and it worked fine for about a day...then the same thing.

I figured that the battery was near dead, so I replaced the battery in the key, and then the remote operation worked fine - for about a day.

I figured that the battery was near dead, so I replaced the battery in the key, and then the remote operation worked fine - for about a day. Then its operation slowly started deteriorating. After about two weeks, it would take about 30 seconds of pressing and re-pressing that button to get the doors to open. I replaced the battery AGAIN and it worked fine for about a day...then the same thing. What is wrong with this thing? Should I just get a new key? One dealer told me it would be about $150.

Dealer quoted me close to 325 when all was said and done. Try this. Take the key housing apart and remove the electronics. Use alchol to clean the inside of the key and the electronics (minus battery of course). That fixed my issue. It was all gummed up inside.

I was just going to post something similar to this... I have to get really close to my 04 C4S for the key to work. And sometimes I have to press the key a couple of times before it works. My 2001 C4 keys worked from far away and are still working fine after 3+ years of use.

What I found odd was the first time I just cleaned up the electronics and that helped but not great. Then I looked at the little Red LED thingy on the key itself and it was all dirty and all I could figure is that it was degrading the signal. Cleaned it out and it worked MUCH better.

I don't think that the LED has anything to do with the signal. I think it's just an indicator to let you know that it's working. I'll try cleaning that too though. It can't hurt.

It is RF. Look at your key and you will see 315 which is the frequency used in the US. Some other countries use a different frequency.

Try this: From far enough away that the key does not work, place the key pointed at your chin from below, and open your mouth, facing the car (I know you will look very strange). Bet you get 25% more distance.
