Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking at 2002s a bit since 2002 seems to be a good year to get. Found one that's in my price range but has what appears to me to be a strange history. I'd like some help interpreting a CARFAX as I've never had to do this before, I've only ever bought new. - Bought in New Jersey mid 2002 - Serviced 07/03 (I assume not all servicings will show up on carfax? - Offered for sale at a dealer in New Jersey 07/03 - Bought and new owner registered in New Jersey 08/03 - Then nothing till 02/05 where sold at auction - Then 1 week later sold at auction again? Same auction? 200miles more on the odometer. Do auctions register twice? - 07/05 registered in CA - 10/05 passed emissions...so what, sat around for 3 months? - 01/07 titled updated/issued - 02/07 sold at auction - 02/07 sold at auction one week later, 3 more miles on it, again probably the same auction? - 03/07 new title issued/update Basically it's had 4 owners and only one servicing that shows up on Carfax. Should I read anything into this? I'm guessing most servicings don't show up on Carfax unless it's done at an actual Porsche dealer?

POST 2Original post

Service appearing on carfax is no big deal but four auctions and four owners is cause for concern. When shopping last year, I looked at a 4 owner car and it had basicly been abused. Be sure to get PPI, eyeball it yourself, and have someone check every panel with a paint guage.

POST 3Original post

VIN Service History check + PPI should be primary sources of "background" info. CARFAX with a grain of salt.

POST 4Original post

Many years ago I sold cars. We used to send our "rats" to the auction. Nowadays it is a little different as there are tons of "lease" and "program" cars. BUT, four auctions would scare me. There are plenty of other cars out there. If you are stuck on this one def. do a service history check and PPI!

POST 5Original post

Take a look at it. Get someone that knows what to look for to go with you. I suspect it was leased many times or just had its share of owners.

POST 6Original post

I am a dealer and I can tell you that sometimes a wholesaler will buy a car at the auction and turn around and sell it if he thinks that it can bring more money after auction fees ect and not have to try to sell retail or to a dealer. If a reputable dealer bought the car first and quickly re-runs the car at auction normally this means it has issues as they dont buy and sell at the auction for profit only to get inventory or get rid of what they dont want. I would put no stock in carfax service or emission reports or lack of damage for that matter. Dont consider auction sales as owners because they are not. The auction history would make me wonder however. As stated before a very good PPI will tell you more than a carfax ever would.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sounds reasonable, thanks for the replies. I'd love to go look at it but its in LA and I'm in Vancouver. Much more variety in the states and the weak american dollar makes shopping in the US very attractive. Once I find one that has exactly what I want, I feel comfortable with the seller, and I can get to a price I want I have no problem flying to see it, and probably will (unless it's in Florida!).
