The leatherette ( kind of like a vinyl) is actually quite durable and has passed the abuse test from my kids many, many times.

Hey. I test drove a 996 today. The front seats are leather (not supple) surfaces but what are the rears? They feel like rough canvas. It actually works for me since I would put a kid seat. Just curious what the seats are made of.

If it's the standard partial leather interior the fronts are leather and the rears are leatherette. The leatherette ( kind of like a vinyl) is actually quite durable and has passed the abuse test from my kids many, many times. Cleans up easy with a wet cloth. I never thought I would say it, but I'm glad I have partial leather with young kids in the car. That said my next 911 will definitely be full leather, at least the seats.

Most rear seats are simulated leather (vinyl). There is a optional full leather package on the cars, but not many of them has it.

My 2001 C4 had the full leather option and I believe my C4S came standard with full leather.
