Before you buy new mufflers have the exhaust system checked for leaks.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have 26k miles but I think the mufflers are rattling, and the car sounds like a Chevy truck!
I really don't want a louder roar, stock sound is fine - what are my best options to replace my cans without breaking the bank (that's what SHE said)?
Or, would it be unusual for mufflers to fail with such low milage?
Might not be the mufflers. Could be with the climate conditions where you are some exhaust hardware has rusted/failed and the car has a simple exhaust leak ahead of the mufflers.
Before you buy new mufflers have the exhaust system checked for leaks.
In some regions exhaust hardware are wear items that need to be renewed every so often.
Could be the cats - or a leak plus the cats. The rattle happens when I'm shifting into 1st from a stop, if I'm not careful with the clutch.
Aren't cats a fortune to replace??
Could be one or both converter bricks have broken loose and are rattling about but you do not report a CEL. Based on this I would then have to put the probability of the converters being the source of the noise a bit lower than just a (relatively) simple exhaust leak after the converters (well, after the 1st ones which are monitored by O2 sensors) and before the mufflers.
The noise could be from loose heat shields too. Cars used in bad weather can suffer corrosion of the hardware used to hold the shields secure (and the exhaust system too) and rattly heat shields can have one thinking bad exhaust when of course the exhaust is ok.
Before you book the car into have the converters replaced and order the parts have the exhaust system and heat shields carefully inspected for anything that can account for the noise. At the same time the tech will check as best he can for loose converter bricks or something else wrong with the converters that might account for the noise.
The converters are expensive. Factory prices run (roughly) around $1000 per side parts alone. Labor to replace is I would (roughly) estimate 2 hours per side. Seems maybe a bit 'high' but techs tell me they always have to deal with the troublesome fasteners which snap or break and require more time.
My car has been a garage queen, so I am guessing nothing is corroding. Could be the heat shields, I'll poke around the exhaust while it's up on jack stands when I do my break pad change in a few weeks.
PS--No way would I spend over $2k for stock cats. I would either buy used, or, get a whole new exhaust w/cats from Fabspeed, etc.
I'm dealing with that exact issue now. One of my cats was bad, rattling. I'm installing a Fabspeed system, from headers to tips.
See my thread: Fabspeed Performance Package on Order".
I figure if I am going to spend a pile of $$, I at least want to improve things, rather than just bringing back to where it was. Be aware, it ain't cheap!
.
That's one pretty exhaust system Cuda!!
It's not motor mounts - I changed those recently.
If my cats are rattling around, would it still pass inspection (which it did recently)?
Yeah, cats are crazy money, I would have went after-market but I was still within the emissions warranty when they failed so the repair was on Porsche.
If it is the muffler seams take them off and have a wrap welded over them. I took mine to a fabricators and had a stainless wrap cut shaped and welded over the original seams, good as new, maybe better, for 200 :-)
I had both of mine go at 80,000 kilometers, but even thought that was unusual. Was harder than it should have been to get new ones from the Porsche supply system....and they weren't cheap. They didn't sound like a truck, more like a small VW putt putt at the time.
Even with cats rattling, CEL may not come on...yet.
Take mufflers off and shake them. The internal baffles do go bad and can rattle.
Use a rubber hammer and tap right before and after both cats to see if they rattle.
You can narrow it down to one of the 4 muffler/cats that way.
Used oem mufflers ebay...300 or so
Used oem cats on ebay....400 or so if the timings right for both.
If not, go aftermarket. Many many cats/muffler products available with price difference in the thousands between products. Do your research.
I'll bash around with my rubber mallet and see if I could get any rattles. It could be a loose heat shield for all I know! If not, I'll see what's actually rattling, and go from there.
If you bang on the cats with a mallet they will rattle. As I said previously, if the cats were "going" then you will get an O2 code. The cats could certainly be rattling and still get you thru an emissions check. There are all sorts of
OTHER
things that might rattle with regards to the exhaust system. I would make sure it's not just a busted weld.
I would also point out that the cats are quite capable of going 200k miles or more. The failure mechanism is virtually always unburnt fuel going through the exhaust. So if your cats do fail find the actual cause of failure before junking another set of cats.
Mine did the exact same thing 3 weeks after I bought the car. 37K showing. Left cat element was lose. No cel lights or anything. Swapped in fabspeed sport cats. Now in a year and a half just find me a "shady" smog station and I'm all set. I had read blogs that said the Porsche cats often fail at 30K to 60.
I drove the car this morning, and heard no rattling. Maybe it's a loose heat shield that only rattles when the engine stumbles at idle? I'll check it out when I get the car on jack stands next.
Ok, about 4000 miles ago, my car started sounding very loud. Fister D mufflers with Fabspeed headers. I get a CEL with P1275 code from time to time - clear code and it comes back after 300 or more miles. When he had it in over the summer to replace a bad fuel pump, Doc at Rennsport thought the noise was only coming from left tailpipe. I've had it up on my lift a couple of times and the exhaust system looks in good shape. I didn't pound on the cats with a rubber mallet, but really haven't heard rattling. I'm sure Doc could fix it easily, but I'd like to try tackling it myself. Car runs fine, just sounds loud, especially before it gets fully warmed up. Thoughts?
