Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

With my Turbo (which of course has the same fuel tank setup) I always fill the tank when I stop for gasoline, whether the tank is down just 1/4 or empty with the low fuel light on.

Usually it takes about $60 to fill the tank so it should have read about 1/3 full.

It'll recognize & reset when you put in a LOT of gas, but not if you only put in a little.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The following happened twice in the last week. The fuel level was near the empty mark so I went in to put $20 or 14 liters (3.7 gallons) into the tank. Started the car and the gauge reading remained the same. Usually it takes about $60 to fill the tank so it should have read about 1/3 full. So I put another $20 in and this time the gauge went up to 2/3 full (where it should be with $40 in the tank). I usually do a fill up but the gas prices shot up so high I just put in a little to get me through until the prices went down. Today I did the same thing, and got the same results ($20 followed by the second $20). So maybe it's always done that? Is this normal?

POST 2Original post

I'm guessing this is in your C4? If so, this sounds similar to how my car functions when I add a little fuel to a very low tank. The tank is shaped to fit around the front wheel drive components, so you don't get a "real" level reading below a certain point. The computer does some trickery to determine range when the car is below (I believe) a quarter of a tank.

POST 3Original post

Agree if it is the C4. The tank has two basins that extend on either side of the front diff. The basins are not connected at their bottom, there is no crossover connection. There is a siphon jet in each basin to pull fuel from the basin. When the tank level drops below 1/2 tank the OBC takes over and computes the fuel level based on how the car is being driven. If one doesn't add enough fuel to at least engage the real fuel level system the electronic one can't know how much fuel was put into the tank so the level does not change. With my Turbo (which of course has the same fuel tank setup) I always fill the tank when I stop for gasoline, whether the tank is down just 1/4 or empty with the low fuel light on.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the responses. This group is awesome!!

POST 5Original post

Sounds like a great way to save money. BTW, "whats a liter of cola"?

POST 6Original post

My gas tank indicator has never shown a 'full tank' even though I fill it as far as the pump 'shut off'. It shows just over 3/4 full.

POST 7Original post

n'thing the "it's normal". Something to do with the algorithm the fuel level indicator uses to filter out sloshing, I think. It'll recognize & reset when you put in a LOT of gas, but not if you only put in a little. It should slowly correct itself as you drive, and might be showing accurately (or close to it) by the time you get to wherever you're going.
