Frankly for those who just are not that great with the cleaning / re-oiling process, it's better to just replace them.

Suggestion · Original poster

I like the idea of cleaning and re-oiling instead of replacing paper filters regularly but are there negatives with higher flow filters?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What are the thoughts on "upgrading" the air filter on these cars? My exhaust is stock and most likely will keep it this way. I like the idea of cleaning and re-oiling instead of replacing paper filters regularly but are there negatives with higher flow filters?

POST 2Original post

An improperly oiled reusable filter can cost you a MAF sensor every time you retreat it.

Thanks 5CHN3LL. Is this due to over saturating the filter with oil and it contaminates the MAF sensor?

POST 4Original post

Improper washing, incomplete drying and too much application of oil are all likely factors in MAF issues with free flow filters. Frankly for those who just are not that great with the cleaning / re-oiling process, it's better to just replace them. The cost isn't that much higher than a stock filter and it protects the expensive MAF. Having said that, I ran one in my 944 and 986 without issue and cleaned and re-oiled both without issues.

POST 5Original post

Having said that, PROPERLY cleaning and oiling a washable filter should not adversely impact your MAF. The EvoMS V-flow intake on my C2 might not make a single HP over the stock airbox, but the howl it makes at higher RPM is worth every penny. Same goes for a set of good mufflers, they make the 996 sound like a proper 911 instead of a refined GT car.

POST 6Original post

on stock setup I would keep the filter stock... it really is the best keeping the oil clean thus less oil change.
