Any danger in using my car's weight to compress the springs for removal / installation?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I need to replace the bearings in my front upper spring strut assembly. Does anyone know if I can do this without removing the entire strut assembly from the car? I found this post in on of the other forums which explains the procedure for other P-models:

Would this procedure work on my stock suspension system? Any danger in using my car's weight to compress the springs for removal / installation? Any advice would be appreciated; any DIY instructions would be GREATLY appreciated :-)

What bearings in the stock strut tops? the thrush bearings that allow the spring to spin in the perch? It'd be awefully rare that they'd be bad if you ask me. and the only time you'd here it is turning the wheel at extremely slow speeds. Other than that the stock top mounts are rubber except for the metal sleve that serves as a guide for the sthock shaft.
None the less, you have to remove and take apart the entire asembly to do what you're looking to do. Go to AutoZone and they'll rent you a spring compressor for free. Just have to leave them a deposit until you bring it back.
The work's not that hard. Search on renntech and you'll find a guide for the R030 suspension install that will be a good guide for how things come apart and go back together.

Thanks Andy.
Those are the bushings that I'm referring to. It's precisely when the car
is driven at slow speeds when the bearing binds. Nothing major, just
annoying after a while.
I was thinking that short-cut looked like a much faster / simpler procedure, but you're right, I'm sure it won't be too difficult a job to remove the whole assembly. Will be kinda fun to poke around in there.
I think I've got this little issue coming on too.
Sounds like a little clicking noise?
Wouldn't even want to think how many hours labor at a shop to do this.
Might be an opportunity to change suspension at the same time....
I upgrade to the M030 suspension. I did the work by myself without a spring compressor for two of the wheels and it took me about 12 hours. I was quoted 12 hours of labor for the dealer to do it so I save about $1,200.
Once you get the procedure down you can get the front strut assembly out of the car, taken apart and put back together rather quickly.
I'm on suspension #3 and I've also had as many different top mounts on the car as well. It got to the point that the last time I swapped out the top mounts I managed to get both front struts out, new top mounts on and everything bolted back up in about an 1.5 hours. The rears the more time consuming one to get in and out.
Andy
It's not so much a clicking... sounds more like tension being
applied to a cable, but only when the car is hardly moving.
Easy to see and hear when you have a helper turn the steering
wheel for you.
It would be a good time to upgrade the suspension in some
way, but I've always liked the stock system. Seems like just the
right combination (for me) of comfort and handling.
