I run the same rear tire, and have found that there are a decent number of options which won't absolutely destroy your sanity.

Suggestion
As long as the car gets frequent washes during the winter, it should be enough maintainance to keep the body clean for the life of the car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
Well, I happened upon a deal on a turbo, and just couldn't pass it up.
The car is an '01 in arctic silver with a full leather black interior, sport seats, 19-inch maya rims (a little "blingy" but they are actually growing on me somewhat), EVO Stage I kit (GIAC chip, diverter valves, upgraded plugs, intake), and a host of other goodies, including a VERY nice aftermarket stereo system with a custom sub/amp box that fits behind the rear seats. And the BEST part...its a six speed! (although I liked the tip, I sorely missed having a manual transmission).
It has 53,000 miles, and is in absolute great shape (except for the fact that it needs new tires and one of the spoiler pistons is leaking). The owner is a friend of a friend, who was having some serious family/career/financial/health problems all at once, and need the car gone this week. The ironic thing is that I had just decided that I wanted to keep my car for at least two more years, but when this opportunity arose at $38,500 I knew I would be kicking myself later if I didn't jump on it. So, my trusty C2 will go on autotrader soon, which is a bit sad (although the turbo is certainly easing the pain a little bit).
I will get some good pics up soon, but for now I hope these awful night-time pics will keep the wolves at bay for a while at least.
(by the way, one thing I have learned after driving the turbo around for the better part of a day is that the n.a. 996 is a damn fine car in its own right. Athough the turbo is an absolute blast to drive, there is just something that is so satisfying and fun about a solid and well-sorted n.a. 996!)
Thanks for the compliments guys. Yeah, I'm pretty stoked about the deal. I honestly would have been just as happy with a nice 6-speed 996 (3.4 or 3.6), but when this came along it was a no brainer. The car was well take care of as well (cpo until about a year ago). Only bad thing is that I'm learning very quickly these cars are pretty damn expensive to maintain. I need 315/25/19 tires in the rear, and the cheapest local price I could find for an n-rated tire was something crazy like 575 bucks!
yes, 19" Work Brombachers
235/35/19 fronts
315/25/19 rears
If you drive the car daily, I agree with going back to 18s. The rear size on the 19s are $$.
I don't drive the car everyday so the tire cost per year isn't "as much."
I'm sorry to hear about your friends problems, but that is one heck of a deal you got there. I paid more for my 02 Carrera last year!
I'm really starting to get that turbo itch again
I run the same rear tire, and have found that there are a decent number of options which won't absolutely destroy your sanity. Not cheap cheap like 18s, but then you don't have to deal with going out and dropping money on a new set of wheels if you don't want to.

Oh, found this while searching, I'm sure this happens enough over there that you'd actually drop the basis on that new turbo another 1000 dollars!

Yeah, there are some reasonably-priced options out there. I'm trying to decide between the toyos and the yoko advans right now. That's funny you linked to that guy on 6-speed...he sold his wheels before I could make him an offer. You are right, those guys all love 19-inch wheels, so if I do decide to go back to 18's, I don't think I'll have a problem selling my 19's over there (except I'll have to get my post count up on 6-speed in order to post them!).
Wow at $38,500.00! What a deal. I have been reading about low pricing, but it it really is something to read about a concrete example. Most of the real cheapies are that for a reason.
Congrats and I
hope
I can be that lucky when the time comes.
Congratulations Scott! Your turbo looks fantastic and the price sounds like a steal. I bet you are enjoying the view every time you walk out into your garage and get to see two Porsches. Are you sure your wife doesn't need a fun car also?
Ha...you know I tried, but she was having nothing of that! She likes it too, and was pretty shocked how fast it feels.
And yes, those are pumpkins, and they will be gone by christmas (I have to pace myself somewhat!).
I'll post up some daylight pictures later this evening.
OMG !!!
I love the interior...... SWEEETTTTT. I have seen a lot of them painted and most I only like a little, BUT yours has a perfect amount of painted -vs- black (IMHO)
That is really really really a beutiful car !!!
WTG!
I could swap 'em, but then the blue car would look pretty bad. There are a lot of nice parts on my carrera I wouldn't mind putting on the turbo (like the silver center console), but I'd rather see if those parts help me sell it first. If the car is still unsold after a month or so, I'll probably drop the price a bunch and remove a few of the nicer pieces and swap them out with pieces on the turbo (or in the case of the plenum, sell it here on the board!).
Okay, you peaked my curiosity.... I found an '01 Turbo in silver in my area with 45K on the clock for $39K...
Tempting, but now is not the time to be buying a new car considering that we're just about to go into Winter.
My wife would also kill me considering the amount I've spent on the car this year.
Very nice catch, Scott! Congratulations, and enjoy it!
I was actually considering upgrading to a Turbo as well, but this is just not the time to do it.
But if you have the money, and the economy is not affecting you, this is the best time to buy!
Scott, here are some nice 18 inch black Fiske wheels that I spotted on Ebay for a 996tt. The starting price is under two thousand.

Here's an '01 TT auction that's over in 20 minutes. Car has 65k miles on it, but the bidding is only at $33k with no reserve. Ouch!

I dont know, there was a tear in the seat (looked like) and the front was dinged up quite a bit...door handle area was a bit rough too..
my guess is that it was really rough and cleaned up as best as they could... indicates an owner that really didint care ? might find more wrong than just scuffs when its driven... still, hard to beet that price
Well,l I'd bet that the TT that was listed locally at $39K could be bought for $36K with some time spent talking to the dealer.
It's pretty scary to see the days of TTs in the $30ks when 993s are selling for that price.
Nah, I'd never do it - I couldn't bear to drive a car like that all year with the amount of salt they put on the roads here - no nice car deserves that treatment.
Wayne,
I know we have two different thoughts on this issue. I am driving my car until the wheels fall off in the next couple of years and part the aero bits before saying goodbye. After that, I would be looking for a good deal on a turbo and do the same since these cars are mass produced compared to previous generations.
As long as the car gets frequent washes during the winter, it should be enough maintainance to keep the body clean for the life of the car.
Not to me...I'd much rather have a 996TT than a 993, and this helps that become possible. I've already got a new car purchase cleared by my better half...now it's just a matter of whether I want to trade my 996 in on a 996TT or 997 or get an Elise and keep the 996.
I just want something that drives damn well...I'm not looking to have a romantic relationship with the vehicle like a 993 owner.
You just had to revive that shining moment! You want to know the ironic part? When I purchased my car fax membership I clicked the wrong button and accidentially bought the $39.00 unlimited (for one month) option, which was ten bucks more expensive than the cheaper option I had wanted to select. That's karma for you.
hey scott...great find!! trust me you will love the new power. introduce yourself over on the 6tt forum. lots of great info there as well. do not know if you are into modding, but a simple re-flash and a good free flow exhaust will get you close to 100 additional ponies and that is only the beginning. enjoy in good health and for many years to come.
Hey Scott, Congrats on the purchase. If you haven't already discovered him, Jack Doverspike at Stuttgart Southwest in Tempe is the best mechanic ever! Fair and reasonable and way closer than the dealership! Great body shop too.
Hi there. I have taken my cars to Jack on many occassions, and you are right, he is a great, honest guy. If I ever own an air-cooled porsche, Jack would be my guy. However, for the newer stuff, I really don't think you can beat Robert at Redline Motorsports. Robert is an ex factory tech (premier tech, actually) (super smart...has engineering degree), his prices are great, and like Jack, he really goes out of his way to make sure the customer is happy. I'll use Redline until the day I die. He knows these cars like you would not believe, and is so fair I'm surprised how he even stays in business.
I do love the power...it is simply incredible. The few people I have taken out on rides seriously had no idea a street car could feel like that.
You are right, these cars are soooo easy to mod for huge power gains (at least compared to the n.a. cars). That's one reason I think I'll be happy with this car for years and years to come (if it starts getting boring...just add another 100 hp!). This car has the evo stage 1 (chip, diverter valves, upgraded plugs, and intake), and I'm pretty sure that will hold me over for a while! For now, and for the sake of marital harmony, I think I'm going to limit the next mods to things like clear sidemarkers and bumperplugs (and even then I might be pushing my luck!).
