Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had the chance to test drive an 09 yesterday afternoon with the PDK transmission.

I suppose this might have had something to do with how he did the mod (not sure what diameter piping he used) or where he rerouted it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had the chance to test drive an 09 yesterday afternoon with the PDK transmission. Besides the fact that the transmission was really impressive, the exhaust sound was so much better than my stock 01 it actually made me angry when I got back in my car. Does anyone know how the exhaust from the new models compares to the say the PSE for the 996? I've never heard the PSE so I can only assume that its similar but I'd like to be sure before I track one down.
Thanks, Shawn
Shawn,
You want sound that is close to PSE? Get ahold of some 3.6L (My 2002 - 2004) mufflers and do the MK II PSE Mod to them. The mod sounds great and will cost you a lot less thatn true PSE mufflers.
Here is a link to one of many, MANY posts in one of a PSE Mod threads:
PSE mod to Stock Mufflers
If you need additional info, read more of that thread.
I don't believe the '09 had the pse installed although I should confirm that with the dealer.
Tim, thanks for the suggestion. I've been thinking about that change, but I heard a local guys setup on his 997 and frankly I wasn't a fan. It sounded much more "tinny" than the growl that this 09 had. I suppose this might have had something to do with how he did the mod (not sure what diameter piping he used) or where he rerouted it.
Just spoke to the dealer. It did not have the PSE as the new model of PSE for the 09's hasn't yet be released. Apparently it has quite a different setup in terms of cats, headers, and induction system. Perhaps those differences in addition to the increased displacement explains the sound improvement. I'm not kidding when I'm saying this difference was dramatic and good...
I will still drive one just to see how the overall "S" package feels with PDK (really would like to compare w/ 996TT), but I don't think I'd get into a an 09 until I've heard more about any teething problems with the new motors and trans over the next year.
+1 on the PSE MkII mod for 996 as mentioned by Tim, it's pretty much the same thing as the PSE since you are connecting the same diameter pipe from the same cap on the muffler to the same point in the exhaust pipe, you just can't turn it on and off.
Darin (FisterD) seems to prefer doing a variation of the Mk1 type bypass mod to the MkII cans (straight pipe connecting intake to exhaust pipes, not j-pipe like the Mk1 PSE). I've never heard it but he has a lot of satisfied customers on this site!
One day I'd really like to put a mic behind the car and drive, just to record the sound with some fidelity so I can post up for him to listen to and compare. Just so lazy about rigging something.
High quality audio recordings of different exhausts would certianly benefit the community as a whole. Most of the sound clips are from terrible sources and you can barely tell what is exhaust and what is background/interferance.

That would be ME!!!! I love that mod!! It couldn't be more perfect. And where can u get such satisfaction for a few hundred dollars on a Porsche! That variation is deep and throaty. Not tinny at all. And it is surprisingly tame until you WOT! Absolute perfection...Thanks for talkin me into it Darin!
Yes, it does. I did the MK II mod to both 3.4L and 3.6L mufflers, and the 3.6L mufflers were by far MUCH better sounding, which is why I told him to get 3.6L mufflers.
In fact, if I am ever able to get another 911 (996, 997, or 99?), if the car does not have PSE mufflers, modding the stock mufflers will be the very first mod I do to the car.
