To lower the car, do I have to change springs and shocks or just springs?

The compromise you run into with the Bilstein HDs is that they're "one size fits all".

If you look up the PCA article on the sport suspension difference the shock from the ROW and US m030 are different setting yet the springs re the same rate.

The point I'm making is that there will not be any significant detrimental effect using the HD compared to the ROW as they are not really matched to the springs.

What I am saying it depends on the use of the car and that most people only use there cars at 6/10th on the orad and maybe 8/10th at DEs so all of this perfect tunning really does not matter.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can anyone comment on which is better, the Bilstein HD kit or the ROW 030 upgrade? I don't plan to track the car, I'm just looking for a replacement set of shocks and/or springs since my stock shocks are worn out.
(Looking at Carnewal, I noticed that both of these two options cost roughly the same.)
For those of you that have either of these upgrades, tell me how you like them.
Thanks,
Mark
If you are lowering, get the Bilstein Sports, not the HD's. Since you are looking into the ROW springs, get the sports. Just my .02.
also note that if you check eBay, a guy has been selling Bilsteins on there for around $700. Great deal.

OK guys, let's think about this for a minute.
- ROW M030 shocks are Bilsteins
- ROW M030 shocks are tuned to perfectly match the ROW M030 springs
If I had the choice (I did, actually), I'd go factory tuned every single time. Especially when compared to a one-size-fits-all Bilstein HD shock.
makes sense... but many have tried the Bilstein Sports and H&R springs (which give you much lower ride height than ROW 030) and also like them...
COUNTERPOINT: ROW 030 comes with beefier sway bars.
Kilgrt... can you chime in on the ride quality of your sports+H&R vs. Stock...?
thx
Pete
Hey Pete...The ride is very very good, i can almost say better then the stock setup, the only thing i worry about, and what all lowered car owners SHOULD worry about are speedbumbs and potholes. If your thinking about doing this setup, we can go for a ride in my car so you can feel for yourself....maybe shift into spring at Pfaff...

The advantage of using Bilstein HD compared with ROW030 is waranty. The HD are lifetime and ROW is 2 years. If you look up the PCA article on the sport suspension difference the shock from the ROW and US m030 are different setting yet the springs re the same rate. So there really goes that theroy that they are tunned to precission. What it really is tunned to the differences in driving habits of european and american drivers. They tend to put more understeer in the US version because its safer. Now if you look up that article you'll find that the HD are stiffer in the front and softer in the rear than the ROW sport. IMO you can't go wrong with either shock.
Your argument seems to prove the inverse of what you're trying to. Yes, Porsche tunes the shocks differently for the ROW M030 when compared to the US 030. You argue that this means they aren't specially tuned for the springs, which doesn't make sense to me.
I believe the different shock tuning is because of:
a) the ROW M030 springs are shorter. Even if they are the same spring rate, the effective rate when considering the bump stops is going to be different. The ROW cars are much closer to the bump stops, which means you're going to be using these stops much more than the US spec cars will. This raises the spring rate, in effect, and requires different damping.
b) Porsche thinks the us drivers have rougher roads, and are less tolerant of a rough ride. So, different tuning.
c) my WAG is that the ROW M030 suspension received a lot more track-focused testing than the US spec setup did. I have no proof of this, but given Porsche's opinion of US drivers, I doubt they put as much focus on the tuning of the US setups.
Net: Porsche spent significant time matching the springs and shocks of the ROW M030 setup (or the X74, for that matter) to the car. The compromise you run into with the Bilstein HDs is that they're "one size fits all". Kind of like a cross trainer, they're not ideally suited to anything. I personally find the ROW M030 setup to be a wonderful compromise. I wish the shocks were a little less harsh in their low-speed damping, but with that said, this is a beautifully matched spring/shock set.
Finally, I'm not sure how much water your warranty argument holds, since my guess is most of the mod-hounds on this board will either be switching suspensions, or have a different car, by the time warranty becomes a concern
One would also assume that the HDs have a longer shaft than the Bilstein Sports, which theoretically equates to less piston travel when combined with a shorter spring. Just $.02.
Great discussion Gents. I appreciate all the feedback. Any idea where I can get a good deal on the US 030, ROW 030 or the Bilstein HD's? I see that Carnewal has them, but I'm wondering if someplace stateside has a better price... Where did each of you get them and approx. how much $$?
Thanks,
Mark
The point I'm making is that there will not be any significant detrimental effect using the HD compared to the ROW as they are not really matched to the springs. What the ROW is is that they tuned it to what they think is right for the sport package with the sway bars.(which are the same for US and ROW) I just making it a point that too many people here think that there is gonna some detrimental effect for not matching the spring and shocks. What I am saying it depends on the use of the car and that most people only use there cars at 6/10th on the orad and maybe 8/10th at DEs so all of this perfect tunning really does not matter. What really matters is that if the shock works for you. Some people actually like something different than the factory shocks. Mark its really up to you, but from what your needs are either one will work for you fine as you are not a serious track person. The HD will give you some extra spring rate up front which may give you quicker inputs when you turn, but at the same time the softer rear will give you some understeer at the limits. You have to decide what is the biggest problem you are trying to address with your handling, and how stiff of a ride can you take.
