this seemed to imply people were doing it without disconnecting the battery.

once you do this you can disconnect the yellow plug on the back-side of the air bag.

You would be best to use a small screw driver for proper leverage.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So i just bought the online Porsche mechanics manual from the UK and when i go to the section on removing the airbag it says " disconnect battery and remove airbag" - no kidding, end of descrption.
Anyway, has anyone got a slightly more detailed comment they can add?
As well, from a search, it seemed like just keeping the ignition off the whole time was recommended to make sure that a diagnosis didn't pop up. this seemed to imply people were doing it without disconnecting the battery.
Hi there, glad to be of service.
Disconnect Battery and give it at least 30 minutes (go have a beer J/K).....
Come back and on the rear side of your wheel facing the gages you'll have two spots where you can locate a tunnel where you'll find two allen wrench female side bolts. Get out your allen heads and a mirror. I forgot which size allen it is or I would tell you now....
Once you get those two bolts out of the way the bag should drop in your hands, assuming that you're sitting in the drivers seat. once you do this you can disconnect the yellow plug on the back-side of the air bag. Careful you don't want to breat that plug. You would be best to use a small screw driver for proper leverage. Once you get that off you're pretty much good to go....
If you need help taking the bag or the column apart let me know.... "I've got skills"...

At our local work on cars days we have removed a few. Hundred.
The battery is connected in this pic and the steering wheel is off. Ignition is also on.
Just stupid Ray with an air bag in his hands, and nothing else.
Boom.
We do this with an instrument cluster face replacement to make sure the needles are pointing in the right direction. Never waited 30 minutes for anything. Beer takes 30 seconds.
thanks for the info guys.
i think i am going to do it with ignition off but battery attached. i think the disconnect caution is more a litigation issue than anything else.
