Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 993 and it will probably remain in my garage for a long time to come (or until it could be replaced by 964RS/993RS!) but the 996 moves the 911 into the truly modern era.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well, after having owned my 95 993 C2 for over two years, I've decided to add a 996 to the garage. Although I would really like a 964RS, I need a semi-daily driver for now(don't worry, the RS WILL make it's way into my garage one day!). I looked around at several new cars for similar money, but when this car came available, it was a no-brainer, at least for a P-car addict like myself!
The car is an 02(May/02 to be exact) C2 in Guards Red with black interior. It is equipped with the 18" lightweight Carrera wheels, heated sports seats(yes really), BOSE stereo, BI-Xenons and a few other minor options. The car has 46000KM(29000 miles) and one previous owner. It also had a new engine installed under warranty just 6000KM(3700 miles) ago. Car also has H&R springs and clear side markers. Looks pretty good to my eyes, even though red might be a bit too "look at me".
I'll be picking the car up late next week and will post pics then. I'm looking forward to advice/assistance/support similar to that of the 993 forum and I'm sure you guys won't disappoint.
Oh yeah, I CAN"T WAIT!
Tim.
Congrats Tim....welcome to the water pumper club. '02 is a great year with the facelift. Am interested to hear your feedback on both "feels". The creature comforts in the 996 are fantastic....great for daily driving.

Good heaven Man, not so loud!!! The 993 guys are only five forums up from here and you're going to ruin the secret. If word like this spreads and others actually test drive the 996 too, you'll upset the delicate balance we have achieved and people will start switching left and right....
Shhhhhh, be wary wary quiet.....
I did the same, after owning a 993 for almost 10 years I bought a 996 and have been using it as my daily beater car. Owned both the 993 and 996 together for awhile and realized that I didn't even drive the 993 anymore, so ended up selling it. Everyone from the 993 board was puzzled at my decision, even my dad told me that I was stupid for selling the 993.
Little do they know.
Yep. I have never looked back since selling my 98 C2S. My current ride is better in every way I can think of. After more than a year I haven't once thought " wow I wish this car had XYZ like my 993". Just has not happened. They love to bang on their chests over there that the 993 is the best of the best. Truth is though that it is a great car as all the Porsche's I have owned (about 8). But so far the 996 has been the best.
Having been there with several earlier Porsches including a 993, none of the earlier models match up to my '99 996. The truth of the matter is that each new year these cars get better and better.
I will confess though that the outside body style of the 993 is more appealing to me than the 996, but it is how it drives and the inside comforts that make the difference.
Truth be told, I had never driven a 996 of any kind until I drove this one last week and was truly amazed. I think I knew that Porsches generally keep improving dynamically each model year and didn't want to "see the light". Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 993 and it will probably remain in my garage for a long time to come (or until it could be replaced by 964RS/993RS!) but the 996 moves the 911 into the truly modern era. Do I really NEED the increased comfort/convenience of the newer car? Of course not, but it sure will be nice in a car that will be driven much more frequently than my old flame. Am I worried about some of the 996's reliability issues? Of course but the 993 doesn't have a perfect reputation either. Since my 993 has been absolutely problem free during my ownership (a dead battery caused by an absent minded owner doesn't count), I'm hoping the 996 follows in it's tracks. The fresh motor goes some way in this regard.
Thanks for the welcome guys!
Tim.
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuq, needs to be lowered on 18" BBS LMs for me to drool over it tho.
plus make the interior black, sport seats, white backs, cf interior. game over!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did the same thing almost 5,000 miles ago. A few things about the 993 I miss but not enough to buy another. I still enjoy the looks of the 993 but I have come to really appreciate the much improved style of the 996.
Sloan has a virtual clone of that car for sale, but it is a Turbo S (non-andial), and it has only 12K miles.

I know a lot of people who have been around Porsche's for a long time don't care for the look of the 996. I am 50/50. I much prefer the look of the front of the 996, especially 02+, but prefer the wider body rear of the 993. The interior of the 996 is miles ahead of the 993 though, and it's actually comfortable to drive.
I sense a great disturbance in the Force...gee, I wander over here from the 993 forum and look what I catch you at...guess with my recent musings over Ferraris, I can't throw stones, eh? Seriously, I drove a friend's 996 cab a couple of times and loved it. These are superb machines. Enjoy yours.
I may be a bit biased, but with regard to the looks of the 996, the rear end of the C4S is one of the finest looks ever produced by Porsche...IMO. Sexy as hell. Difficult to argue otherwise.

Ed, is my secret out? Hopefully I'll have the car by Friday, I'm getting a bit impatient. Should be a good day, take the 993 in for the "big" service and leave with the new DD.
Tim.
I've owned 5 911's including 2 996's new in 99 and again in 2001. They are all great cars and while there's no doubt the 996 is more "capable" than the 993, the 996 will never be regarded as an iconic representation of the heritage upon which Porsche was founded (and that's not a knock against it either). It's a new beggining with much room for evolution. Again, the 996 is a great sports car but even Porsche would tell you that it was a good starting point that didn't exactly get it all right from their 1st generation. Remember, the 993 is the result of an entirely different technology evolved over a 40 year period. To compare the two directly isn't quite apples to apples.
Having said that most of the negative comments I've heard from 996 owners about 993's have come from owners who love their 996 (rightly so) but who also have never owned an air cooled 911 of any year.
My personal advise to those who are no less of an enthusiast than any of the air cooled camp, is that if it's at all within your financial capabilities (at any point down the road) to experience what it means to live with an air cooled 911 (again of any year) you might well feel differently (beyond a pure peformance perspective) and you would most definitely gain an even greater appreciation for the heritage of your modern water cooled example to boot.
Rememeber that the water cooled cars will be here forever. The chance to experience a great example of a technoloigy that is gone forever and something that can't be found in any other marque remains desirable and exclusive and for good reason. The 993 was the last example of a car built mostly by hand with last say by engineers who stayed true to Dr. Porsche's founding principles. That chance won't always be there as times passes and no one can argue that the Porsche of today is holding true to those same principles.
Just my two cents.
Some nice thoughts Jordan. Love your 993 BTW, it's been my desktop on a couple occasions. STILL waiting for Friday to arrive. I'm feeling pretty happy with myself being able to own both a close-to-end-of-an-era car as well as the new generation(3.6 at that!) car at the same time. Should make the coming summer months a lot of fun.
Tim.
That's a beautiful 996 you've got sittin' on them LMs. Thx for sharing your thoughts here.
As a newer 911 owner (1 year old), and having driven my cousin's 993 on a few occasions and a buddy's 993TT (lovely), I guess I just ended up not being able to connect with the 993. It does have a special place in history for those that do like the aircooled noise and the odd floor hinged pedals and the inferior ergonomics and performance platform.
As for the whole handmade comment... bro, the 996 and 993 shared the same assembly line. The same factory assembly guys used their own hands on the same line.
Anyways, I love the shape of the widebody 993s and it always catches my eye and so do the 996s and 997s and on and on. Though I'd take a 997GT3 over the 993TT, I would take the 993TT over the 996TT no question.
It overlaps that much and that's a testament to the 993's staying power.
Congrats, both cars are great and both very very different.I absolutely love my 996, however my Buddy has a 993 C4S and its absolutely gorgeous, If i had the space I would have one from every generation, your on to a great start. Let us know how you find the" fake Porsche "
Thanks Tim and congratulations on your new to you 996. My 1st mod on my 1999 was also H&R springs. Next up were Gemballa sport mufflers but they didn't do it for me (at all). Went to factory PSE immediately on my 2001 (above), on full time and loved it. A must do mod for the 996.
Look forward to some pics....
