Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Replace still had the rattle' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ims, he'd be' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check anything' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Suspected cause
I thought cats as well, but it was the passenger side PSE can.

While checking the cats with a mallet, check the mufflers too.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
16 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
Rennlist: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.
2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

No change in RPM while stopped, and no major noise while rolling.
Was riding along in a customer's car recently as a passenger. We were alongside a low brick wall at a light, and though the engine was purring perfectly, and ran great, there was this occasional noise from the rear that sounded like marbles or pebbles getting tossed in a laundry dryer. No change in RPM while stopped, and no major noise while rolling. It was really strange...I heard it, he heard it, and we both were sort of WTF was that? Not too loud either, would probably drown out if other vehicles were moving near us. 2004 996, stock, w/pse.
Not a constant one either, just once or twice while sitting, then again later at another stop. Weird.
Any ideas?
I have this same issue. I took off the belt to check anything that rotates (IE. p/s pump, water pump, pulleys), and came to the conclusion that my p/s pump made noise while I rotate it. I am replacing the power steering pump as we speak and hopefully the sound will be gone.
I would definitely tell your friend to take it in, have it looked at, and based on what we've seen online highlight the IMS. I hope it's something small
Cats. No, not the meowing kind. Happened to both my original cats, and one of the replacement ones. Intermittent rattle at idle, like marbles, disappears when gassed. Hit the cat with a rubber mallet to reproduce rattle. Replace.
Another possible suspect, clutch linkage or release bearing. Sounds like much smaller marbles, very faint, goes away when you step on clutch. Had my bearing replaced, still had the rattle
. Tech fussed around with the clutch linkage, no more rattle
.
C'mon, guys. Enough with the IMS already.
Sounds similar to when one of my PSE cans went bad.
I thought cats as well, but it was the passenger side PSE can.
At first it was noticeable only when driving next to a wall, median, etc.
Later, it became incredibly obnoxious.
FWIW, when my PSE went bad, the mallet test didn't work.
We took the can off the car, shook it like a sob, wacked on it, and no rattle.
Put it back on the car, started the engine, two minutes later, the racket begins.
Apparently, it took heat and exhaust pressure to produce the rattle.
