Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Getting my car fixed. Had a knock on the rear right side and will need new driveshaft , wheel suspension etc.
They are taking the engine out to see its still squared up and I was wondering would it be worth getting a new clutch in and rms? It has 40k and I think its still on first clutch. Also by changing the rms am I tempting fate and will have future rms problems?
Cant wait to get my ride back... I miss it soooo much!
thanks
Nick, when you say knock, I assume you mean smash? Or was the engine knocking?
What happened any way?
Don't change the RMS uness it is leaking. If it isn't leaking at 40k then you will likely have an RMS trouble free engine.
My car has also done 40k and its still on the same clutch. There's plenty of meat on it. I inspected it myself and decided not to change it.
i did change my clutch when engine was out for RMS treatment @ 35.000 klms...even if i knew that there was a little bit more life approx 10.000-15.000 klms more on it.
i wouldn't touch the rms.
it is most likely that you will not have an rms prob...since you've never had one
Thanks. I took a corner too fast and lost control and banged the kerb. Im having it repaired at an official Porsche approved bodyshop. They have the special 911 plates that allow the jigging to be 100% right. Most body shops use a universal jig but that can be up to 3mm out! The repairs come with a life time guarantee...
If it aint broke why fix it. If your RMS does not leak don't touch it, as the replacement might give you trouble. As far as the clutch have a qualified mechanic give you an estimate of how much is left and make your decission from that point of view. If 50% or more don't do it. If it is less like 30% consider it.
Change the clutch disk. Really cheap at this point. If RMS not leaking leave it alone. I'd keep old throwout bearing as well not likely to ever fail if good.
Mine is just a C2. I might have to replace the gearbox as well. The shunt on the wheel also seems to have knocked thru and pushed the other rear wheel out of alignment by an inch or so.
Any ideas to the durability of the gearbox?
I would replace the clutch... simply for the fact that it will not be too much additional work anyway since the engine is out and the tranny needs to be replaced. This will give you the confidence that you will not have to go back in there in a long time (and incurr additional expenses) - So I suggest new pressure plate, clutch plate, and throw out bearing.
I'm going to be the minority here and say changing the RMS would be a good idea. If it hasn't failed yet it will eventually. Some get more mileage than others, but it's going to happen. While the car is apart it should be done. That's a pretty significant amount of labor. I would also recommend changing out your intermediate shaft flange seal. From the look of the car I'm assuming pre '02, so you will need the small depth flange seal which is much easier to install. There are updated bolts from Porsche that help to keep these from leaking. You'll need 4 999-385-004-09's and 3 900-385-275-09's. A lot of "RMS leaks" could possibley be attributed to oil seaping past the threads on the earlier design bolts.
I'd change the clutch plate and leave the rest alone. I'd even put in a lighter Flywheel if was my car. By the way, why do you have a GT3 badge on your car? It makes you look like a Poser. You see that kind of stuff on BMWs and ricers.
Still here DoubleNutz. Just been out on business to Chicago and San Fran. Busy with work and my cars laid up waiting for its gearbox to be rebuilt on Dec 1st. So desparate to get ot back on the road
WOOOOE, what happened?
I was in Chicago only a few weeks ago and I am just North of you in Portland, Oregon at this moment (If you are still in San Fran). Just got back from Caracas myself working on a pretty big project and leaving for London in a few weeks. Perhaps we can hook up there when I arrive.
Well the car runs fine but the gearbox has got noisy so best not use it until it gets fixed.
Back in the UK now. When you head over this way we must hook up. PM me when you coming out here and I will arrange to be in London (200 miles from my place but I get down there very often with work).
Cheers,
