Unless you have to do something to the filler neck I would not see it a dealer installed item if we all can change the shifter, (which I have in another car).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Saw a bit on this somewhere and then today I see it is in the the Tech Equipment catalog for the 2005 model year. Dealer did not know if it was a retrofit to the 996 or strictly a 997 item. They have some on order to see and to sell.
You know your into Porsche too much when you think you must change the gas cap to a stylish one. But I think it's pretty cool.
Anyone seen this item, know if it fits the 996?
Bill
every two weeks?
IF i buy it, i will be seeing as often as i am seen mine now...every 2 days.....
and if i like the design...which in fact i like i might open the tap to see it even if i do not have to fill the car with petrol...
I wonder what the material is as well since it says "aluminum look". I also am now wondering what expensive means here in general terms? Outrageous or just Posche normal expensive?
Bill
Of course, that is so Porsche can charge to retrofit the tequipment ga$ cap. Porsche lost a lot of money on the gas cap recall and this is how they make it back ten times over.
There is also a bulletin that says only a dealer can replace the battery in the remote key.
same thing applies on stereo unit retrofit, tyre changes and almost everything in order to make money...
thanks god we can use any petrol station up today...tommorow who knows?
Porsche Petrol Station....
i preety sure that they will hire porsche qualified stuff to put petrol in our cars...
The Tequipment gas cap was a little design project that I did in between other work. I initially wanted to have a real aluminium cap, but it failed on several reasons (cost, safety regulations and the fact that you will be real p*ssed off when that hunk of metal slip out of your hand and put a dent in your nice new fender). The only way we could save the alloy optic is to metal galvanize the plastic (it's not painted). It will retrofit to all the 996/986 models (and even your VW Passat), all you have to do is select and clip on the correct retainer strap (included in the box).
Using the exchange calculator from Gert's page, this is about $169 USD. So it is ridiculously expensive in my opinion. If that included 3 tanks of gas I would still think it high but maybe justifiable. Oh well, may still be on my list once I see one to see if it is as cool as the photos suggest. Unless you have to do something to the filler neck I would not see it a dealer installed item if we all can change the shifter, (which I have in another car).

Thanks for the info.
You better inform your collegues from Tequipment about that, as all their info is saying that the cap is painted.
Filler cap with aluminium finish, painted
Stef,
Great to hear from you. What is it about Porsche that makes we want to worry about items like the gas cap. But it is such class piece of hardware that I am pretty sure I will need it when available. Looks like I have some time to save up anyway. Thanks for the info.
