I've not done it on mine yet (as they only need cleaning every 30-50K), but it appears to just be a matter of loosening the ring clamp and sliding it off.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I am not starting this thread to debate how effective or ineffective this part is, Thats been beat to death. I have one question. Does it really matter if I get an Fabspeed, Schnell, Evo..whatever? Are they all about the same, we are just talking about a hose and a plug correct? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Marc, The consensus seems to be that EVO's is a better product. It is also the most expensive. I have the first gen of this and pictured is the second generation. the sound at WOT is great and that is about all its good for. Performance is highly debatable.

POST 3Original post

Quotes source post: 5228140

+1, its still a piece of crappy plastic... but great sound!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

BUT, is the evo worth 500 more? I dont expect any performance increase, Just a little more noise

POST 5Original post

Yes it is, I have one in my garage with 350miles, then I went with the SC... pm me with a price

POST 6Original post

Sound is worth it on the fabspeed. I gots one and it is all of that floored @ arount 4500 rpm I chose it simply because of the no real hp gain and prefer the look/price of it (like the stock look better) BTW, I'm running the stock air filter and the plastic intake screen to avoid any possible issues. The ratio of risk vs performance gain is not enough or worth it for me. Could not hear any change in sound with or without screen. The key is the intake muffler removal, the orange cap thing

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5228231

But the question remains, are all the ones like the Fabspeed essentially the same part? And I kind of like the stock look and filter as well.

POST 8Original post

I went down to Home Depot, got a piece of flexible pipe/hose for $5 and made a Fabspeed knockoff. It sounds just like the fabpseed mod, works just fine.

POST 9Original post

Questions... Is this part a huge cosmetic concern? I keep my trunk closed 99.9% of the time. What kind of noise does this put out? I have MKII muffler mod. already, video clip anywhere with sound?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 5228260

With schnell, yes and about $100 less. They also have the muffler "cap". I like the red fabspeed as well as the carbon fiber looking cap better. I also found a used one at pelican parts for $100, made it easy for me.

POST 11Original post

EVOMS has my vote -Best looking, best quality -Least amount of issues reported Debating over sound is silly because no one's yet done up a back to back to back comparison taking notes on sound. I will say that the EVOMS positively howls at WOT upper RPMs and is not noticeable at any other time. hp/tq boost wise... again, no one's done a back to back to back real world test on these and even on a dyno, tough to get the wind ram effect with those weak **** fans at the shops.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 5228378

Good question. Don't know if one could hear it so well with performance/louder mufflers. Since it is an intake sound improvement I would imagine the combination of having both would be slightly better from within the cab. If I had bought/moded the mufflers first, I probably would not have messed with getting a CAI. It was just a cheap/easy way to get that sound. At the time I thought and hoped it would be all I needed to satisfy my need for that better sound. What it did is fuel my desire for more

POST 13Original post

the evoms easily drowns out any engine noise or exhaust noise at WOT at the upper band of the rev band. i have the factory PSE cans and you can hear it on the lower end of cruising along, but the exhaust noise is drowned out again when you're going WOT right at about 5.5-7K RPM? you simply won't hear intake noise period anywhere else or it's jus too hard to detect which is fine by me. i'd rather hear the PSE at work. brap. sure cosmetics count. wtf would you ever discount that? do u want to spend money on an ugly pos? evoms is it baby!

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 5228595

Me too. The sound when wide-open is great. I can hear both the intake and exhaust at WOT. It sounds like a banshee exploding out of the gates of hell. But in a good way.

POST 16Original post

i remember when i first picked up the car in burlingame, CA (Bay Area) headed to downtown SF as I was gonna crash at a buddy's place (where barry bond's leases a unit, i know cuz i pissed him off in the parking garage) for a long weekend before driving it up to seattle.... i rev matched it down to 3rd driving at around 60mph and just mashed it and shifted into 4th at redline.... the noise pierced my ears; heavenly noise. at that moment, i was like by ebye M3, HELLO 911! so i got some mad love for the EVOMS/PSE combo

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 5228740

Gets attention from cars around you, too. To the OP's question, I should add that mine has been zero trouble in terms of MAFS, water ingress, all the stuff people worry about. And I drive the car year round, and use a commercial DIY car wash on it (though not an automatic). It seems to be a very well engineered piece that I can just forget about other than at service time.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 5228755

even if my car sounded like a prius, it gets attn around me period 24/7 to the point where it's getting old. anyways you can't hear the intake but only in special circumstances... PSE... that's crazy awesome.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 5228740

You do know "steriods = short fuse" right?

POST 21Original post

Damn...just when I thought I was done spending money. You guys have me sold. Mod it is.

POST 23Original post

Send me whatever your going to pay and I'll build you one for half the cost

POST 24Original post

as far as looks go...the evo looks more sporty than stock due to the exposed filter and set-up. if looks do not matter, but still want to spend money because you want to say you have a "cold air intake", i'd go for the fabspeed unit. their kit eliminates the muffler box inside the filter housing which supposedly reduces turbulence and increases flow. do not know if the fabspped unit does anything to the exhaust sound.

POST 25Original post

how does the fabspeed unit sound? similar to evoms?

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And again I ask.. whats the difference between these two other than aesthetics? They are both a tube and a plug? correct? Schnell - 90 Bucks Fabspeed -$225 Bucks

POST 27Original post

Fabspeed has very expensive screw clamps? Sorry. Just couldn't hold that in.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5229621

Nothing beats a good screw clamp!

POST 29Original post

Another vote for the EVO - no issues and sweet sound

POST 30Original post

What about the K&N cai? I believe retail is under $300. I paid $150 on eBay. Installed in an hour, K&N even sent me some replacement hardware for free. Exactly the same experience, pure heaven in 3rd@WOT! Especially in a tunnel It even has a "sock", for lack of a better word, that covers the filter element allowing you to run the filter with less oil and hopefully fewer MAF alarms(I have yet to have a CEL in almost 2 years of use. I actually had the light checked). Having said that, I have some concern about allowing particulate matter and water into the intake. Since mine is still CPO I also remove it before going in for service.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 5229617

mark...like i said the fabspeed has provisions to elimate the muffler box entirely from the inside of the air box. the shnell does not. also i believe the fabspeed unit incorporates the plastic screen within the airbox to improve flow. i do believe that the elimination of the muffler box from within the air box does improve the amount of air across the top of the filter. wheather this warrants the additional cost i do not know...but definately the schnell does not appear to do anything imo...

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 5229050

You're kidding, right?

POST 33Original post

Yes, it matters if you actually want to increase horsepower, but as far as sound and hp the Fabspeed provides the least of sound and HP.

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 5231005

I know! Wishful thinking...

POST 35Original post

I'm interested! =) I think I need the growl... and can hope for HP too! Anyone not using theirs? =)

POST 36Original post

Evo CAI http://youtube.com/watch?v=okru3YLgRHI Can't beat the sound.

POST 37Original post

Does anyone have experience with an EVO installation on an X51 motor? Thanks Mike

POST 38Original post

Anyone have instructions on how to swap out the filter on the EVOMS unit?

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 5318782

Yes, I installed one on my X51 C4S. The only difference is that you need to order it with the tiptronic intake tube. The tiptronics and the X51 have an additional "breather" line between the MAF and the throttle valve. BTW the sound above 5K rpm is AMAZING! Christian in Atl 03 C4S, X51, X73, PSE, Aero

POST 40Original post

Christian Besides sound, what has been your experience with the EVO on an X51? Any CEL issues? Fit / Clearance issues ?? How about seat-of-pants dyno or have you had it actually dynoed? I am running GHL Loud mufflers and the sound is incredible so this might really finish it off. Thanks Mike

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 5318834

I've not done it on mine yet (as they only need cleaning every 30-50K), but it appears to just be a matter of loosening the ring clamp and sliding it off.

POST 42Original post

Quotes source post: 5327018

30K eh? I guess I have about 10K left then. Instead of cleaning, I just bought a new one. The fit is tight. Not much room if any to slide it off in that box.

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 5327053

The milage depends on use and dust in your area. I think that K&N have a pretty wide range for cleaning intervals (if my memory is correct). To be honest, that's what I'll end up replacing mine also. When mine needs cleaning I'll replace it with one of these and remove the hassle of having to deal with oil and risking messing up the MAF. http://www.aempower.com/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryID=93

POST 44Original post

Wait, so you're saying K&N because the air filter is a K&N for the EVOMS intake unit? My filter looks pretty dirty meaning it's got some crusties in the folds.

POST 45Original post

Quotes source post: 5327271

Well, the filter I have on my EVO unit is a K&N. Here's a photo of my engine bay.... You can see that it's tight, but I figure that if it cannot be wiggled out, then I would take off the MAF, then remove the intake from the engine to get to the filter - a bigger pain, but still not that much hassle, as all of the clamps are easily accessible.

POST 46Original post

I have the same setup as above in Wellardmac's car and kudo's fro BruceP description of "banshee's from hell" sound. I think that describes it perfectly! The howl is so addictive and raunchy, the only comparable sound is an F-car winding it up!

POST 47Original post
