Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was torn between a slightly used M5 and a new M3.

I will base this review on my test drive or the dealer's demo.

I test drove the 335i sedan and liked it but with the kids I had to agree to the wife that we should get the wagon.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just took delivery of a new 2008 M3 sedan. What a car, the ultimate family sedan!!!!!!
I'm keeping my C4S for the weekends and the M3 will be my daily driver. It will replace my 2005 Audi S4 which is coming off lease.

Great everyday car. Handling is worlds better than my previous E46 and I would say that it's faster than my C4S. Don't know that for sure, since my car only has 50 miles on it now and I'm still breaking it in.
I was torn between a slightly used M5 and a new M3. The M3 has much better handling and get's better mileage, not that's its good. The M3 will probaby avg about 15-16mpg and most M5's seem to average 10mpg.
I wasn't crazy about the SMG trans of the M5 either. Every car I've ever owned (about 15) have been stick shifts, I've never owned an automatic.
The M3 is an amazing car and since it's now available in sedan, you get a decent back seat for kids or adults, trunk, etc.
It's the ultimate family car in my opinion.

Good choice! I picked-up below one some days ago to replace my X3 as a daily driver. I'm just not a SUV guy and love the 3-serie. Not 420hp but good for 28mpg and a decent trunk to put a stroller in.
That's exactly the issue; it's only available as a 328i and not with the 335i twin turbo engine. I test drove the 335i sedan and liked it but with the kids I had to agree to the wife that we should get the wagon. In EU you can get a 335i or 335d touring but not in the US. However, the engine is a to 230hp de-tuned 330i engine and I didn't feel too much difference between these 2 models. Especially without AWD and with the sport package, the car feels pretty strong.
+1 on Ben's question. We just turned in an Audi A4 Avant with the 3.2 engine (end of lease). I loved it and hated to see it go. My wife wanted a Honda Odyssey, so that's what I got. She's the best, so I give her what she wants (also, she fully supports the Porsche thing).
Anyone won a 100 series BMW yet? Impressions, if you do?
i love the odyssey. if i had a family i wouldn't hesitate to get one so long as the other being was into it as well.
i'd actually probably never end up getting a rover or some big **** $100K suv over a honda pilot. they're so well made.
i drove the 135. it's nice, but i'd rather be on the cheap and drive my cherokee than drive this thing. it's nice for someone who's never really had a fun car.... but i've had some fun cars and so have you. underwhelming. but then i find a lot of cars underwhelming these days.
+1...I don't know why so many people insist on driving trucks over something equally useful that drives like a car. The Odyssey is actually a pretty elegant solution to the problem of carting around kids and their stuff.
A cow-orker that test drove a 135 said the same thing..."I can see why people say they're such fun cars, but the thing is, I know better."
Sure.
Audi S4 - 2005, V8, 6 spd manual, I bought it new, drove it 51k miles over 3 1/2 years.
Great car, awesome in the rain, awesome in the snow with snow tires. More torque than the E90 M3 and a lot more torque than the E46 M3. Great shifter, much better shifter than either M3.
Downsides, gas guzzler and lots of understeer. I put sway bars front and rear as well as a milltek exhaust and a revo chip. With those minor mods the handling and power was incredible. Very reliable, only problem I had towards the end was adding a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.
Pedals are also a little far apart for heel toe shifting but you get used to it. I just roll my foot over.
Review of E46 M3 - 2003 M3, bought new, 6spd. Drove it 10k miles in 7 months and then it was stolen
Pros - nice neutral handling, some understeer on tight corners, some oversteer on high speed corners. 50/50 weight distribution. I auto crossed this car. I liked the raspy sound of the exhaust, though most people don't.
Cons - bumpy ride, no torque, shifter a little notchy. You have to rev it all the way to get the power out of it.
Review of E90 M3 - bought new 2008, I just took delivery a week ago so i only have 60 miles on it. I will base this review on my test drive or the dealer's demo.
Pros - Lots of torque (not as much as the S4 but a lot more than the E46 M3) Handling is amazing, car stays flat, very neutral handling, 50/50 weight distribution. Engine, exhaust sound amazing. Fun to drive. Power is really found at 3k and over. Fantastic acceleration, faster than my C4S, but not as fast as my previous Z06, but incredible acceration for a four door car. I would says accel is equal to the E60 m5 but the M3 has twice the handling. Great brakes too. The perfect family car.
Cons - notchy shifter (that's it so far).
I would rank the cars in this order (they are all very good)
1. 2008 E90 M3 sedan
2. 2005 Audi S4
3. 2003 BMW M3
I also test drove the Lexus IS-F. - Great power, lots of oversteer, bumpy ride (you would never know it's a Lexus). half the back seat of the E90 M3. The paddle shifter 8 spd auto is actually pretty good, even though I've never owner a car with an auto trans.
I just didn't want an auto, give me a clutch pedal every time so it wasn't the car for me. The Lexus IS-F is a great car for someone who wants an auto trans.
