I thought that the 22 ft lbs was kind of 'soft' for the torque, but that's what I used (the factory must have used 80 to 100 ft lbs).

I'll be changing my transmission oil soon and want to confirm I have the right tools. Anyone know for sure if the transmission drain plug on an '03 C2 manual transmission is: 16mm Triple Square or 16mm Allen Also, the fill plug is 17mm Allen correct?

POST 2Original post

Here you go sir! http://p-car.com/996/diy/transmissionfluid/

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Interesting that this DIY states 10mm versus the one on RennTech which said 17 & 16mm. 10mm would seem to make more sense, so I'll go with the one you provided. Thanks Red! See you on the Rennlist NY Tri-State 2nd Annual Spring Run (4/27)?

POST 4Original post

It's 10mm. I'm not sure where you got 16 and 17mm...

POST 5Original post

Hello, I just did this (this weekend) on my 99, and it's a 10mm. I had to use Vise-grips to 'break' the drain plug loose then used the 10mm Allen. No real problem. I thought that the 22 ft lbs was kind of 'soft' for the torque, but that's what I used (the factory must have used 80 to 100 ft lbs). I also put in "just" 2.7 Ls instead of 'until the fluid comes out the hole'. Hope this helps, Patrick

POST 6Original post

16mm 17mm... those got to be Ferrari sizes... LOL! Interesting enough the Ferrari oil drain plugs uses 12 and 14mm allen. Huge drain plugs.

POST 7Original post

993 had 17 and 19mm! It is indeed only 10mm for both. Make sure you get a decent length breaker bar and an allen socket set - using the hex keys are a bad idea overall when you are dealing with something as delicate as these drain plugs. You likely know this already but make sure to open the fill plug first

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 5311757

993 had 17 amd 19mm where? Of all the 993s I wrenched on I never had to use any 17 or 19mm allen, As I don't even have those two size in my chest.

POST 9Original post

I think people may be confusing the thread size with the size of the allen key required to remove it. The thread size could easily be in the 17-19mm range.

POST 10Original post

Patrick Did you go with Red Line? I've been pleased with mine. I haven't missed 2nd gear since the transmission change. I can now go up the gears comfortably even when the tranny's cold. Yes, Magilla Gorilla is alive and well and tightening transmission drain plus at Porsche in Germany!!

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, did it this weekend and it's indeed 10mm. Thanks for all of the replies.

The instructions on Renntech.org are for Boxster and Carrera. I can tell you for sure the early Boxsters had a 17mm allen for the fill plug and on the right is 16mm triple square with a hole in the middle for the drain plug. We also heard that some of the early (1998) Carrrea's also had larger plugs. Always best to check what is on your car - Porsche changes things without notice.

POST 13Original post

Yes I did, I couldn't believe how 'black' the fluid was with only 55 thousand miles! Now get this.....I'm all ready to 'bust' the fill drain plug loose...I have the 10mm Allen socket on a 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor and using my long 1/2 breaker-bar; I'm ready to give a 'real' push on the breaker-bar and 'BANG' my hand/breaker-bar handle smash into the bottom of the car................the damn bolt was loose!!!!!! Okay, if that wasn't bad enough, when I take the plug out.....fluid comes out???? Yes, the car was level....as best as I can tell I got a little less then 3 Liters out; I put in exactly 2.7 Liters. Oh, and I guess I should have known because when I took the plastic back cover off it smelled like 'gear' oil........... Thanks for asking and thanks for telling me about the RedLine oil. C'ya, Patrick

POST 14Original post

It's pretty normal for some fluid to come out when you remove the fill plug because you're supposed to fill the trans until the lubricant comes out the hole, not by some specific volume. Assuming the car is level (carpenters level on the door sill is an easy check for that) of course.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 5314780

I found out the hard way on the 996 transmission it is volume specific, the synchros will not work properly if it is over filled.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 5314876

I must have missed the TSB on that.

POST 17Original post

I don't believe there is any TSB on that, the factory spec. did mention specific volume to be used, so.... With the 993 the spec calls for something like 3.8 liter, filling it to the filler hole was about 4 quarts which never caused a problem in shifting in the 993 transmission. I believe the 996 spec calls for 2.7 liter, and it is possible to pour in almost 4 quarts before it starts to come out of the filler hole depending on how level the car is when it is jacked up. So DIYers need to be volume specific when filling the 996 transmission, instead of just following the old school method of filling it until it comes out of the filler hole, which works fine on older 911s but not on the 996 tranny. There is a reason the spec calls for only 2.7 liter.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 5314990

It's typical for Porsche to list a capacity, but then also to say to fill to the bottom of the hole with the car level. And this is the case with the 996 as well:

POST 19Original post

I guess I must of not conveyed this clearly. Assuming the car is perfectly leveled it will come out of the filler hole( which is difficult for DIYer without a lift at home, using jack stands) so in many cases most DIYers will put in more oil than the specs calls for if they follow the "coming out of the filler hoel method", which will cause the synchros not functioning properly resulting difficulty in shifting into 1st and 2nd gear. Just passing on some personal experience that's all. Maybe this is related with some many people complaining about shifting issues????

POST 20Original post

Always fill the case up until it is level with the bottom of the fill hole which is evidenced by oil coming out. Before putting in the plug, lower the car to the ground and let any overfilll drain out. The bottom of the hole is the optimum level the lube should be at.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 5315116

Robin, I agree with you on this, that is why I put just 2.7 Liters in. I had, when just starting in the morning and below 40 degrees very, very hard to shift into second until the oil get 'warm', problem with my transmission. I guess I'll really know when I drive/shift after first starting out. In my case, it can't be any harder to shift into second, when transmission oil is cold, than before; unless this will hurt my gears................ I'll let ya'll know in a couple of day....Axel is till up on jack stands until maybe Friday or so! C'ya, Patrick

POST 22Original post

Okay, I took Axel out for the first time, after the transmission re-fill yesterday. This time I shifted from first to second while the transmission was 'relatively' cool, as in, just starting out, and the shifting was very smooth. I even down shifted from third into second, then into first with no problems. So, at this point I'd say that the RedLine fluid is doing it's job. I'm also going to stick with the 2.7 liters instead of fill until it runs out of the fill hole (I have no way of telling how much more it would take, after the 2.7 liters, until the fluid started running out). If the folks at Porsche say to put 2.7 liters in I guess that will be okay, I guess time will tell, C'ya, Patrick

POST 23Original post

Patrick One thing I noticed is I can't downshift into 1st while the car is moving at all until the gear oil warms up. Have you noticed that? Once it warms up, it shifts fine. I'm going on 3 weeks now and have not once had the car jump out of 2nd cold. I took 1999Porsche911 and Doug's method of filling to the hole. It took less than 3 quarts to do it that way.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 5326673

pat056, I never had a problem of it "jumping out of 2nd"; just hard to get 'into' either first or second - when cold. It will be tomorrow before I get to take Axel out again but like I said.....yesterday he shifted 'great' right out of the garage . You also wrote: "it took less than 3 quarts to do it that way", so it looks like my putting 2.7 liters should be okay. Thanks for the reply, C'ya, Patrick

POST 25Original post

That was one of the same exact issue when I overfilled the gear oil, and I didn't over fill it by a lot, probably oly by 0.5 quart.
