Suspected cause

A number of folks think supercharging is probably the way to go if you're trying for really impressive power/torque gains, and others also point out that suspension upgrades will allow you to make better use of the power you've already got.

Suggestion

Porsche changes a bunch of engine parts on the 3.6 996 engine to get 25 more HP with the "Carrera Powerkit" - if bolt-ons could provide meaningful increases I think Porsche would have gone that route.

A quick way to get a little more out of the car is make sure you run a gasoline that has the design octane for the car.

Suggestion

The car seems to run stronger, particularly in the higher RPM ranges, but realistically it would probably take a stopwatch to quantify the gains.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What does the power chip do? Do they help? Any negatives to the engine? If anyone has one or any experiences with one I would appreciate an opinion. Thanks

POST 2Original post

This topic has been discussed at length in the past - you might want to try a search to locate the previous threads. I don't have one in my car. The powerchip is touted as a relatively cheap and easy horsepower enhancement for the 996. Some folks who have tried them swear by them, others swear at them. Excellence Magazine did a story a year or so ago and concluded the 996 does not lend itself to significant, if any, horsepower gains through quick and easy bolt-on modifications. Porsche changes a bunch of engine parts on the 3.6 996 engine to get 25 more HP with the "Carrera Powerkit" - if bolt-ons could provide meaningful increases I think Porsche would have gone that route. A number of folks think supercharging is probably the way to go if you're trying for really impressive power/torque gains, and others also point out that suspension upgrades will allow you to make better use of the power you've already got. A quick way to get a little more out of the car is make sure you run a gasoline that has the design octane for the car. The 996 is designed for 93 octane, but here in California the highest widely available octane is 91. I get 100 octane unleaded and add it to the tank to bring the tank octane up to 94 (1 gallon of 100 for each two gallons of 91 yields 94 and it's easy to remember that ratio). The car seems to run stronger, particularly in the higher RPM ranges, but realistically it would probably take a stopwatch to quantify the gains.

POST 4Original post

I have heard that there is aa add on piggyback computer from Racers Group that works pretty well.

POST 5Original post

Even though the people who work at Powerchip are nice, their product is bunk. I made the mistake to install it on my Boxster and the dyno afterwards showed a slight loss of power. Find someone else ...

POST 6Original post

Did you get your money back, because they claim to have a 14 day trial.

POST 7Original post

I did not get my money back but this is my fault. I trusted them and I did not do an after-installation dyno within the 14 day trial period. Big, big mistake ... When I dynoed my car, it was too late. Months had pased ... My fault of course but this does not change the quality of their product, i.e. there is not any

POST 8Original post

Try Todd at EVO motorsports. They have a strong reputation for ECU modifications. I will probably look at theirs when I am ready to add an electronics upgrade to my 996. http://www.evoms.com/p%20996%20computer.htm

POST 9Original post

LOL,..Chips (ECU re-programming) are like people; they are not all the same and some are decidedly better than others,... From experience, GIAC software is the best in this business and the end results are well worth the outlay. Both ourselves and EVOMS are GIAC dealers/installers since their software provides better performance & drivability than the others do. Just my biased (for good reason) opinion.

POST 10Original post

SPR: 1 gallon 100 octane to 4 gallons 91 octane yields 92.8 octane for the 5 gallons. 1 to 3 yields 93.25 for the 4 gallons. 1 to 2 yields 94 for the 3 gallons.

POST 11Original post

Gains from chips in NA cars are minimal and the car needs to be custom tuned on a dyno to get any (I believe that's how TRG does it). Some gains are found by mapping for higher octane levels, but that doesn't work for most people. I sometimes buy 100 octane at the track for street driving. I'll mix 50/50 with 91 (yields 95.5) and then top off locally with 91 at 1/2 full (yielding 93 for the full tank afterwards) to stretch it and maintain at least 93 octane. It does make a small difference, maybe even more than a chip.
