Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's long overdue but I promised some people that I would post some pictures of this GT3 conversion project. We're close to being done (but I've said that before) and hopefully will have pictures of a finished car soon-ish (every time I put a deadline on it I think I jinx it).
Anyways, this started out as a '99 996 Carrera that I bought off a kid here in LA. I had to thoroughly de-rice the car, ie. removed the blue light-bulbs, the 150lb subwoofer box in the back with a neon light, the cheap lowering springs, etc. I managed to find someone selling a crashed GT3 in Europe and I had them strip the entire car and send everything but the chassis here to LA. And I also managed to find the world's best mechanic who actually prefers to remain anonymous.
The goal when this project started was to create an awesome track car which I plan to keep and never sell. And to tear up the public roads once in awhile. :^)
Some of you might ask why go through all this with the new '03 GT3 coming out in the US? Well, the short response is that this project started over almost 2 years ago and that wasn't really seen as a possibility. But I really have to say it's been a very rewarding and satisyfing project for me. And I'm going to keep the car so I don't really care about resale or value. Plus I needed something other than the stock market to lose money in. :^P
Here's a list of what's been done so far and other stuff that's being done, but I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot:
- '01 996GT3 street engine with GT3 tranny being put in.
- Coilovers with Hyperco springs and bilsteins. 450lbs in the front, 600lbs in the rear. Forgot the valving. Adjustable swaybars. Camber adjustments on front corners. The car rides insanely low and is extremely rough. (My girlfriend refuses to step foot inside the car)
- GT3 leather seats (sold and replaced with new GT3 fabric seats)
- GT3/TT brake upgrade with GT3 ABS controller
- 19" HRE540R wheels
- '02 front upgrade with bi-xenons
- '02 front cup bumper which comes with mesh grilles (we had to redo the mounting for the center radiator as it's different between the street and cup car).
- GT3 aero-kit - FYI the rear wing is actually a different part # for the 996GT3 because the air intake is located on the other side, so I had to sell my old wing and buy the actual GT3 part (and they're not cheap, carnewal quotes $4k)
- GT3 black lip spoiler on the rear spoiler (a small detail most GT3 wanna-be's miss)
- Rear bumperettes removed and rear bumper cover holes filled in. I replaced my old bumper with the actual GT3
- Re-did the tranny. R&P is now 8:32 and the gears are all much shorter. Top speed is about 160MPH at redline in 6th. The largest RPM drop is 2700 from 1st to 2nd! That means from redline @ 7800, shift to second should plant me around 5000. I can't wait.
- Rollbar (sold and replaced with full 6-point rollcage from Matter/Porsche Motorsports)
- 5-point safety harnesses for both seats
- Removed sunroof - this was some hard work but well worth it, because it is *really* heavy to have the sunroof panel, sunroof, motor, etc compared to just the no-sunroof panel.
- Replacing rear/front windshields (since we have the roof panel out anyways)
- Replaced carpet with GT3 carpet (no holes or provisions for rear seats)
- Upgrading old '99 leatherette and gray trim with newer leather/back trim.
I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot, but I'll add to this thread as I remember (and if there's enough interest). Anyways, on to some of the pictures (which really aren't that glamorous.)
I also have some older pictures of the tranny pulled apart and the engine when it arrived from Germany, but I'll have to go dig those up later.

Here's a picture without the bumper cover attached as I was missing some retaining strips to hold the cover in.
You can also notice the side and center GT3 cup airducts in the front which really tunnel the airflow.
<img src="http://www.kyopo.org/GT3/IMG_0787.JPG" alt=" - " />
Console tray's been removed. GT3 handbrake installed. The door panel's been pulled to install new leather door panels with the cubby holes (no speakers).
All the wiring is finished.
Interior won't be started until the windshields are put back in and the car is painted for the roof and new rear wing (which is currently on its way over from Germany).
I feel sorry for the guy who's going to detail this thing.
<img src="http://www.kyopo.org/GT3/IMG_0789.JPG" alt=" - " />
And here's the beauty almost in. The motor and tranny mounts need to be reworked a bit. So the motor needs to be dropped out one more time. If everything fits, we can hook everything up and work out all the electronics.
<img src="http://www.kyopo.org/GT3/IMG_0791.JPG" alt=" - " />
It's hard to tell, but that's a new roof panel (it's primered black) without a sunroof and let me tell you that baby is *light*. My guess is that just the sunroof panel (without the sunroof) weighs twice as much as the no-sunroof roof panel because of the additional structural enhancements to accomodate a big hole in the middle. And this doesn't include the sunroof itself, the motor, the structure to hold the sunroof in place, etc.
Kyopo,
This is just great! Thank you!!!!
I know that there are three questions you don't want to answer so I won't ask them (1. how much longer, 2. how much money and 3. how much time invested)?
What were the issues with fitting the engine? Did it not just drop right in??
The info on the sunroof is interesting. There has been a lot of conjecture on whether the weight difference is substantial. So now we know.
I recently discovered another god reason for deleting the sunroof. It really does make a difference to the headroom when wearing a helmet! Plus the hardware is solid so you are constantly hitting it.
We have recently been discussing 5-point vs 6-point harnesses on the Ringers list. You might be interested in reading this link:
<a href="http://www.opentracking.com/5_pts_vs_6_pts.htm" target="_blank">http://www.opentracking.com/5_pts_vs_6_pts.htm</a>
Conclusion, dont use a 5-point harness. Also, pay special attention to the mounting instructions there for the sub belts. This is NOT the way we currently do it.
I cant wait to hear how the car is on the road.
All the best,
Stephen

How is your shop doing this exactly b/c I hate the bumperettes on my 03 cab and have the new GT3 nose and skirts being put on as well
Thx for sharing the pix... they're stunning!!!
Can't wait to see when finish <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />
Wow Kyopo!
That's a hell of a project. I really have to hand it to you on doing it right. Can't wait to see the finished product. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Aside from the 996C2, the wrecked GT3 cost me around $35k and this included the engine, tranny, ecu, wiring harness and all the other parts off the car. And then there was maybe another $20-30k or so in other parts including the seats, brakes, suspension, the actual GT3 rear wing. I should really sit down and do the accounting but that kind of takes the fun out of it. :^)
We're not too far away from finishing. Definitely before summer. We started actual dismantling of the transplant car around fall of last year. It hasn't been full time since you have to just keep working until you run into a problem. It's really tough to tell what all parts we needed until you actually get to working on that part. We had a problem with finding one of the transmission parts that broke during freighting and this held us up for about 2 months.

</strong></font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Helvetica">Yes and no. The issue is that it's the same motor that's used in the 996TT/GT2. Thus it uses the same mounts. If you get a chance try looking in the rear corners of a TT to compare what it looks like in a regular 996C2. It's really different. My mechanic theorizes that the GT3 is really a TT/GT2 tub with the narrow rear fenders. So the GT3 engine "fits" in the 996C2, but the mounts are different so things just don't line up quite right.

Yes, it's actually quite heavy. Next time I'm back in LA, I'm going to try and weigh everything to see. The no-sunroof panel is only a few lbs and really feels like a feather compared to the sunroof panel and all the structural supports for the sunroof.

You also have to remove the steel bumperette pieces that attach to the rear bumper.
BTW, the US spec rear bumper (not the bumper cover, but the actual bumper) is heavier than the euro rear bumper. This must be due to DOT regulations.

The conversion is 99% complete. We got her running. It's been a long road and a comedy of errors.
I'll follow up later with a much longer post describing the details of the conversion and some pictures.
A quick question to anyone out there who has access to the Porsche IPAS database in Europe? If I give you an '01 996 GT3 VIN number, could you provide the relevant codes to be able to program and sync up all the electronics? Our current roadblock is that we had a few electronic components that we had to replace and we don't have all the IPAS info to program them with. If anyone could help or point me in the right direction 'twould be appreciated.
More coming soon.
New pictures right before it went off to the paint shop for final detail and sand-polish. It's still missing the side skirts, rear wing, aero fins, side mirrors.
BTW, if anyone can help with getting access to the European IPAS database for Porsche VINs, please let me know. Thanks.
The car is done and is in LA ready to be picked up. I've been so busy with a new company and their IPO, that I haven't had a chance to get down there. I should be heading back to LA in the next few weeks and should have some pictures and more details to follow up with. I can't wait.
