(When I say last, I'm throwing out the Toyos which were generally off the scale bad among the 11 tires tested.) It's because the Contis have very good wet weather performance, are moderately priced, and have the highest treadwear rating.

Tire Rack always seems to be out of the Bridgestones....there's probably a reason for that I guess!

Unless you're driving like a bat out of hell, any Z rated tire should be just fine, noone should be testing the limits of adhesion on public roads, save it for the track
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Awful. Loud. Traction not as good as others. Lots of good reviews on this site. Just search for 'tires'. There are tons of opinions, so clearly trial and error on your part will help a lot. The beauty (or not) of the car is that tires don't often last so long; you can try a bunch over the life of the car.
FWIW, I am going with Goodyears, Bridgestones, or Michelins next. Probably the Goodyear DSC3
Do not buy those tires - my personal preference are Bridgestones, but I agree with nycebo's advice - also, go to
www.tirerack.com
- even if you don't buy your tires there, you can research different tires and read reviews from real users...
I've had Bridgestone S02's on my '03 C4S and just put Continental's on my Turbo....both are fine IMO. Tire Rack always seems to be out of the Bridgestones....there's probably a reason for that I guess! I like the Continentals though, I don't think you can go wrog for street use

Car and Driver (December) just rated 10 top tires. Goodyear Eagle F1 rated first, Continental ContiSportContact2 rated second, Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 rated third and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 rated forth (of course the rating is over a number of tests including wet/dry and track).
I have used Continental Sport Contacts since car was new in 1999. I have put on three sets. Could not get them when I needed new rears a month ago so I put Michelin Pilot Sport Rib N1 Porsche Approved on rear and still have Continental Sport Contacts N2 on front. I can't tell any difference. Both are quiet with the top down except on certain roads. Handling seem the same to me. I have pushed the car hard at times but I don't track the car or race.
Skipp, the problem is that I never trusted the feel of the contis. It always seemed to bounced instead of grip. And, my experiences in the rain when sudden changes were required always scared the bejesus out of me. The Bridgestone S-03 Pole Positions basically stayed glued to the road in the wet....actually it was really frightening how well poised they were because I once spent a ton of time in a huge parking lot pushing the heck out of them and they would not skip a beat. Of course, I have not tracked either tire, but the contis just never inspired confidence. Moreover, they were loud. Did I mention loud?
Meanwhile, I also drove the BF Goodrich g-force T/A KD on a 993 and they were stunning in the summer heat. I mean glue. Those things picked up washers and pebbles from the road like a vacuum. I just wonder how long they would last as a daily driver. But, I was impressed.
What I think I like about the Goodyears is the tread, the fact that they don't seem to be too loud for a daily driver, and they seem to drive like rails in the rain. Living as I do in the northeast, it's important to maneuvre the awful roads up here in the inclement weather. Plus, did I mention the tread? It's very interesting and seems quite aggressive. And, as I have mentioned before, perhaps to the chagrin of others, Corvette users rave about them and that car breaks tires loose like no other.
Good luck with the purchase....let us know what you end up buying and how you like the tire.
I have S03s on my car right now, and they seem pretty good so far. I had the contis and they were fine, but they didn't last very long. I actually even used them on the track and seemed to have pretty good grip. The only tires I have ever hated were the pirelli P-zero rossos. I always felt like I was driving around on hockey pucks.
Dell, send me a pm with your schedule. If I am in town when you come to DC, of course I'd love to meet up with you!
Granted, these weren't the same size as on a P-Car, but I had a BMW 330Ci that came with Continentals - I hated them and never read anything positive - I switched to Bridgestones (sorry, can't remember which version - I think a Potenza sport tire) - the combination of grip, wet handling, dry handling, noise, and treadwear blew the Contis away. Everything I've read about Bridgestones to fit our cars is positive - I've never read one bad review. I can't figure out how Contis wind up high on rankings, as I seem to always read negative things about their various tires in car magazines on all types of cars as well.
My ContiSports (original) were so bad by far, I never gave Continental another chance. I'm embarassed for Porsche for putting these German tires on our cars. Maybe some government or sponsorship deal? So far, I've had (on Boxster S):
Dunlop Super Sport Race (R-compound): 5 stars - surprising wear "considering", amazing grip, very stiff, slightly noisy (all street ratings)
Bridgestone S-03: 4 stars - good grip, quiet, good ride, mediocre wear
Bridgestone RE750s: 4 stars - good grip, quiet, great ride, endless tire life, cheap, sidewalls a little soft (in 17"), 97% of S-03 grip
PZero Asimm's: 3 stars - good grip (about RE750), stiff ride, quiet, mediocre wear
ConitSport 1s: 1 star - poor grip--would break the tires loose all the time, stiff ride, noisy, mediocre wear at best
I also have AVS ES100 on a different car, so not apples-to-apples, and they are similar tires but not as good as the RE750s.

Ditto for the Dunlops on the track, I was pleasantly surprised as they were so cheap. Too bad they're discontinued
. For the street, I don't care much and tend to buy what ever is cheaper. The tires on our cars wear within 12-15K miles. I'd rather save the extra cash for PSS9's or PSE, or GT3 seats or....the list goes on.
Unless you're driving like a bat out of hell, any Z rated tire should be just fine, noone should be testing the limits of adhesion on public roads, save it for the track
I thought the Contis on my C4 were great when they got warmed up, but not very good when there were cold or in the rain. There are better options out there, but they're not a bad tire if you live and drive in mostly dry conditions.
Far superior. The S0-3 is the non N-rated iteration of the S0 line (S02, S02A). Cheaper (slightly) than the N rated line but still most would rank the MPS2 above the S02 slightly.
I had several sets of contis. I thought they were sort of OK as a street tire. They tend to become rather noisy quickly though. Don't even think about tracking them....
I am now running PS1 and am rather happy.
Okay, I got my car back yesterday and I had a chance to drive it again with the Contis. Let me reiterate: I hate 'em. They track grooves in the road and don't give me that straight-on direct feel that I am accustomed to with the Michelins or the Bridgestones. And, don't even get me started on ruts in the road that totally pull the tires out of track. Now I'm no expert, but I would NOT recommend them to anyone. There are just too many better options out there.
And by the way, if this is any indication of an N-rated tire, then that rating means naught to me. I can't believe I only have 6k miles on these tires and won't be changing them out for about another 10k. I guess it gives me reason to drive it more.
Agreed, of the tires I've run, the N-rated ones were the worst. If you are planning on doing any suspension, brake, or performance mods, now is the time. That's what I did with my Contis, basically used them as testing/thrashing tires. It was either that or run over some nails. I couldn't wait to get rid of them.
I'm happy to hear all this. My car came with Conti's and I like the car on the road and the track. That means when it's time for tires it'll be an even better ride. Yee-Ha!
I finally got this C&D issue. With all due respect to those who are satisfied with Contis (I and/or II), C&D's calculations are fundamentally screwed. For example, a tire that generates 0.92 G's on the test (the low except for 1 tire) vs. 0.95 G's (the high) scores 97% as high. Similar story with track times which maybe varied by 1 second. Although C&D scored treadwear and cost as "only 20%", these cost measures and wet performance is where all the differences (as defined above) were. Basically, this was a cost contest with some wet performance thrown in. Seriously, how can the #2 tire (Conti IIs) be last in dry autocross, last in dry skidpad, and 2nd to the last in dry braking? (When I say last, I'm throwing out the Toyos which were generally off the scale bad among the 11 tires tested.) It's because the Contis have very good wet weather performance, are moderately priced, and have the highest treadwear rating. If you read carefully, the Yoko Advan Neova's were really the best. For the same screwed scoring reasons, the BFG KDs came in #10 yet had the fastest dry autocross and highest dry skidpad numbers. I don't care to race or do skidpad challenges in the rain. If wet weather performance is a valid concern, I and others would agree that the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 is among the best choices and was C&D's overall winner. Otherwise, the C&D review is better scored for SUVs. Just my 2 cents...
P.S. That's not to say the C&D review is a terrible article. If you are in the market for tires, I highly recommend getting it. Just read it through a couple of times and remember to throw out their scoring. They even admitted that the results didn't match their subjective feelings and to use the raw numbers if you disagree.
