Five weeks after getting my 996, I installed a B&M SSK.
Leading evidence: 'Install b&m ssk' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good reason porsche goes' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install b&m ssk' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

FWIW, the only difference is the bushings used, plastic-porsche, metal-BM.

I think there's probably a good reason porsche goes with an in car unit ssk, a shorter bracket on the tranny would be way cheaper, but they choose not to, hmm....

Suggestion
Sorry if this is an ignorant/stupid question...If you install a short shifter, do you have to replace the exiting shift ****?

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think they are all pretty close, I have a B&M and coould'nt be happier, The only thing I will suggest is to stay away from the Factory OEM SS, not because its bad quailty, its not , it really is a B&M made part....Its just way to much money...
I find the schnell ss for $158 only, and in the description it said, "...unlike our competitors shifters which position your hand in an awkward grip." Do the B&M has awkward grip position? here is the link for the schnell:

If your car is still under warranty I would consider the OEM SSK, they have sold for $300-350 new on ebay. At that price delta, it's a good buy especially when you consider the cost of a new transmision. If not, get the B&M, it IS the same shifter without a Porsche part number.
I love my B&M but I kind of think they are all B&M. Even the Schnell with the german name and the made in Japan looks a lot like if not exactly like the B&M but a different color.
I have OE on my 04 TT cabriolet. The B&M on my 03 TT was a little notchy to me. B&M is kind of fun though because it like clicks into place. Stock is very smooth. The throw may be a little longer in OE, but I am happier with the OE than I was with the B&M.
Someone said the stock was the same as B&M, but I don't think that is true. I sold my 03 TT to the Porsche service manager at my dealership. He took the B&M out and put the stock short shifter in. Not sure why he would have done this if they were the same. They also do not feel the same.
FWIW, the only difference is the bushings used, plastic-porsche, metal-BM.
The best shifter is the BM, however the best one to get if your car is under warranty is the OEM.
We've put them all in and the only one I _dislike_ is the style that bolts to the transmission. I just don't seem to like it at all. We've taken "off" a few and always replaced them with the B&M "in-car" shifters instead. Those are my favorites...
Basically the ones that mount to the transmissions don't shorten it very much. You have to throw away the stock bracket... and you do all that work for virtually nothing
At least that's my personal feeling on the ones that go to the transmission. The in-car ones reduce the throw and make the entire experience more precise
I have had my Schnell unit in for about 2 months and do not know how I have been driving without it.
Either B&M, Schnell or FVD are grat products but whatever you do..install one. Your driving experience is completely enhanced with the SSK.
I tried the schnell short shifter and was not pleased. Had the snap rings that hold the shifter sleeves in, pop out twice (yes they were in right). I replaced it with a factory 997 shifter which gives a 20% throw reduction from the factory 996 and I love it.

I could definitely tell when I did it but now I am used to it. The other day I drove a car without the SSK and could feel and see the longer throws. But it feels like mine takes a little more effort, so to speak.

Yes, neighbor there could be warranty issues with an aftermarket ssk, remember the tranny is a nonsvc item, 8k to replace. Search the threads, there was a line about this a while back re the warranty issues. Yes, the bm and oem ssk are exactly the same, but if your car is under warranty and the price delta is 100$, why risk it?
hey there spencer, seeing as I'm from the UK too we'll have to figure that out. Just got your mail. I actually ran out of the B&M SSK's (the in car ones) but I have more coming in next week. I have the other style ones that mount to the transmission but I'm just not going to sell those- I just don't like them nor do I feel comfortable with those ones. I wouldn't put them on my car so I'm not going to advocate 'em on anyone elses...
Lots of "what if"s. What if you put in a OEM one, not the dealer? If I experience any problem, in 15 min I can switch back to pre under car B&M, and go to the dealer. I think an in car one may be harder to switch back, no?
I had my car 2 weeks and noticed the shifter was a bit sloppy. I did research here and determined that the B & M kit was the best way to go. I ordered one on ebay - Titanmotorsports their ebay store for 199.99.
My mechanic in Toronto installed it when I had some other work done last week. Let's put it this way, I actually said

out loud to myself as I drove it back home. Definitely go with B & M, huge improvement.
Sorry if this is an ignorant/stupid question...If you install a short shifter, do you have to replace the exiting shift ****? Or does the existing **** work with a shorter throw? I have the alum Porsche shift **** (upgraded version)...will that work? Thanks.
Sounds like a plan, Batman...
No probs. No real rush, as I'm just finishing the fitment (and payment!!) of the PSE at mo' ....Be-Jesus!!
....didn't think a manufacturer would be brave enough to make an OEM silencer that's THAT loud!!...fan-bloody-tastic, just like sitting on the sand banks at Indianapolis/Arnage!!....just got to install the electronics bit now.
fair enough, thanks for your honesty!...was weighing up the merits of one versus t'other....
I'll give you a shout later about it!
Cheers
