I got not one call from the ads placed anywhere else even though the ads ran for a while longer.

It is absolutely impossible to set a price on a car when you don't know any of the specifics of that car.

I got 4 or 5 calls from the CL ad and sold the car to a woman who called about the CL ad and arranged for a test drive and then after bought the car.

Given this dealer's experience I can I think in the future it will use CL more often.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2005 C4S for how much? I don't care if it has the diamond encrusted brake handle (option code 749 if I recall), it ain't worth near that much money.
The 2005 C4S was a 996, so the year is very likely correct.
Many of the things he lists as optional are standard equipment for the C4S, such as: full leather interior with alcantara roof liner, Bose premium sound, "premium" wheels, stainless steel exhaust tips, etc.
The car isn't cobalt blue either. It looks like midnight blue to me.
I do like the factory aero kit though. They are pretty rare for the C4S.
Guess I seem to be missing somthing ... What makes the guy an A Hole because he lists a car on C-List and asks more than the car is worth? Free country! Who cares!!
He is just out of touch with reality. He obviously did not do his homework before he put it up for sale. It sounds like he is trying to get out of it what he put in to it NOT what it is worth in today's market.
A-Hole is a little harsh!
Easy on Craigslist. A couple of years ago I had a car to sell and placed ads in various newspapers, their online ad sites, and Craigs List.
I got 4 or 5 calls from the CL ad and sold the car to a woman who called about the CL ad and arranged for a test drive and then after bought the car. From when the ad went up to when I sold the car was just a few days.
I got not one call from the ads placed anywhere else even though the ads ran for a while longer.
More recently, I had my eye on a nice Cayman about which I knew some of its history. It was a good car: Well maintained and in good shape. The dealer just hadn't gotten around to preparing the car for sale and putting a price on it.
I stopped by the Porsche dealer the other day to see if the car was through with the prelims and now available.
I was told the car was sold. On a whim, to test CL, the dealer placed an ad on CL (and other places) even before it had the car ready to sell. Generally the ad goes up and the car is prepped then the calls come in.
Very soon -- within a day or so -- after the ads went out someone spotted the CL ad and called about the car. Not long after he showed up and bought the car even before it had been prepared for sale. From when the ad when on CL to when the car was sold was just about 2 days.
Given this dealer's experience I can I think in the future it will use CL more often.
Sincerely,
Macster.
Same experience here. Sold the wife's old Toyota through CL to a good local buyer. Ads on other national media were a flop. I think CL is a very good source for local buyers, but an over priced Porsche will need a wider net.
I agree with Macster's comments on CL - I've had lots of luck selling all sorts of items there, including cars. it's rare that it takes longer than 48 hours for me to sell anything that I post.
My car was advertised nationally on Autotrader and locally inBoston on CL. The local ad was $1k cheaper. With the CL aggregator site SearchTempest I found the local ad just before I called the owner ;-)
I'm a new 996 owner and I found it via Craig's List. I understand the Bay Area may be different than other parts of the country, but here, CL works very well. Sold my wife's ML320 there, my 67 MGB there, etc. Recently rented a property I own. SF Chronicle was $75 and not yielded 0 calls, but generated spam calls instead. Awesome. CL was free and rented within the week.
I'm a believer.
Maybe the seller is posting it to get his wife/gf off his back and the high price screams "she has no idea what its worth" and he doesnt really want to sell? LOL
All mocking of this dude aside, it is not uncommon to see 996 C4S models listed for around $45,000 north of the border here in Canada - which makes it a great place to sell your C4S if you have one here - especially given that the Canadian dollar is worth slightly more than the US greenback right now. That being said, the Canadian price typically also includes the roughly $5K to $7K (minimum) you need to pay to get it here (transport, duty, taxes, etc.)
I agree with the comments about it not mattering but it is an absurd price. The owner's either not serious about selling or is just going to sit and wait for the one odd duck buyer who doesn't know what they're getting into who says, "Wow, this has everything I want in it and it sounds like a real deal! I mean, it even has Cold AC!!!!" Or maybe they are serious but just don't know the market at all. Who knows?
Yes...although plenty here will say that $35K is Turbo Cab territory.
While this seller is clearly off, for every crazy seller there is a crazy buyer. I say best of luck to him -- it helps keep our resale values up. lol

There is no question the price is high. But I also think there are a lot of people who purchase car based on what they feel is a good deal and do not research the cars.
I saw a 99 996 for sale at $29K I dont remember the miles but they were very low. I think that is overpriced for a 99 996. But maybe we're undervaluing our car.
PS anyone wants to pay me 29K and i'm selling!
I don't think any of us should be complaining about a guy taking a flyer at a high sales price. It can only help to prop up resale value for the rest of us. The sellers that are giving them away are inevitably the ones hurting your wallet.
Ok I apologize for hitting CL and calling that fellow an A Hole. I really thought CL was a bad place to advertize. Maybe cars are ok. Massage services are not. A cop stopped me for speeding one time and I said to him. "What would you do if I called you an A Hole?" He said "I would arrest you".. So I said what would you do if I only thought you were an A Hole but didnt actually say it" He said "I couldnt do anything.. " So I said "Well I think you are an A Hole" lol. I should keep my thoughts to myself for fear of being reprimandeder by other posters in furture.
I agree with that. Unfortunately a car is a depreciating asset. I have put my car on CL for 2 weeks now. Got a few replies. Some low ball offers and some who only were looking but said price was about right for the car. But I have seen 99's asking high $20s as well as under $20s.
BTW... love that Avatar pic. Your car looks perfect
Amen.
I don't think I've ever seen another group as determined to drive down the value of their own possessions as I have seen on this forum.
As for asking price, no matter where you set your asking price, people will still come in and low ball. If I put my asking price at $15,000, someone would offer me $10k without even taking the time to look at the car. So where do you start?
I know of a guy picking up a $42k '99 996.
He is flying to AZ to buy the car. What's the attraction?
12,000 miles.
Of course, by the time he gets it back to Boston it will have 14,000 miles.
Not a car I would buy, for a number of reasons...but for every seller there's a buyer.
I guess we should support this guy, the 996 really is undervalued compared to the other p-cars (arguably warranted). I myself is planning on posting my 99 996 at a pretty ridiculous price on craigslist hehe, just in case someone wants it for that price, if no one wants it for that price, then ill just keep her, and take good care of her.
What logic did you use to come up with your opinion?
You haven't seen the car, you don't know which version of 996 it is and you don't know what options it has on it. You also don't know anything about the history or the condition of the car.
You guys didnt read the fine print - not only are you buying the car but you get 4 free weekends with R/T airfare to the bunny ranch... Taxes, Tips and transportation to the airport not included.
The reality with any car and how special they are (options, rarerity, etc) is really how much they really sell for. My audi S4 Avant showed $14-15k in wholesale numbers (from my Audi dealer when I wanted to see what trade in was). I sold it in 1 day from a buyer in the East Coast for $5k more.
I know that the 996s are not rare and I think what KBB shows is about right, but I guess it depends on what the "buyer" is willing to pay for. Some will pay more some will pay less...
Did you call NADA and tell them you wanted to buy their '99 Carrera with 12,000 miles for $26,000?
Am I to infer from your posts that you don't think there should be any pricing difference between standard equipment cars and those with factory options such as 18" wheels, Litronic headlights, full leather, heated seats, hi-fi, DSP, aero, etc...?
Options, desirable colors, etc. can result in a specific vehicle's value being at different places in the range of appropriate values, but don't typically warrant a 25-30% premium over market.
I've bought and sold a number of vehicles based on NADA pricing, including my current TT for which I paid $2K over NADA wholesale which included a new factory CPO warranty.
You asked for the basis of my opinion which I showed you using a proven source, coupled with my personal experiences.
If you don't agree with me then that's fine. Let me know if you ever decide you want a TT. Have I got a deal for you.
You missed the point. It is absolutely impossible to set a price on a car when you don't know any of the specifics of that car. Declaring that you think someone overpaid is one thing, but declaring it down to the dollar when you don't have all of the facts is something else entirely.
To beat a dead horse I have bought and sold cars on CL. I don't think I am an a-hole.
The price is high but it's not complete insanity. It could be worth low $40's. Asking 20% above reality is high but it's not completely out of line in my opinion. I don't mind offering 20% below a person's asking price so why should he not feel ok listing it for 20% above reality!? Ok, maybe it's 25%....
