I replaced the front amp with a Rockford Fosgate 600W 4 channel amp and wired the door speakers and front dash speakers into the front channel and the backs into the rears.

I recently replaced the head unit with an Alpine system and love it.

I replaced all of the speakers in the car with good quality Infinity coaxial's and put in a Kenwood CDC-X995 that has Bluetooth, HD Radio, Pandora an iPod Gateway.

Suggestion
I ended up replacing the head unit in my 996 with an Alpine, but if I had to do it over I would look at Nakamichi.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Remember the facory set up is crossed over at the amp so even if you just change those door speakers with coxials all your going to get out of them is lows.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
I was thinking about adding the factory Nokia equalizer to my CDR-220 radio. I know that the factory radio sucks, but I have a thing about keeping the car's interior stock looking.
1) My question is other than the obvious EQ unit (or faceplate), what other parts do I need in order for it to work? I know that there is a port on the back for some sort of wire...
2) does anyone have any part numbers for what I will need?
3) is it worth doing? Does the eq sound nice? the unit seems like it has some presets and a user button where you can make your own settings...
I recently replaced the head unit with an Alpine system and love it. I now have satellite, I-Pod-MP-3 capabilities and far superior sound. Kept the stock speakers and equalizer. Simple install and the update face does not significantly alter the apperance to any great degreee. I'm sure the "Purist" would disagree but that stock unit sucked in 99 never mind 2012.
I don't think an EQ is going to solve the sound problem for you, and it might even make it worse if you're equalizing line-level outputs. The people who are suggesting speaker upgrades are right. I did this with my truck last year, and was amazed at the selection of really efficient (ie are adequately powered by the head unit) drop-in replacement speakers out there.
I ended up replacing the head unit in my 996 with an Alpine, but if I had to do it over I would look at Nakamichi. More money and not as nicely featured in many cases, but they look super OE in our cars.
So you have the factory EQ... how did it connect up?
The reason why I am even thinking about doing this is because I can get this part for $50... and if all it will need to work is plugging in a wire to that one port plus a mounting frame/collar that is widely available and pretty cheap then I would like to put it in.
Thanks
You might want to look into the Kenwood Excleon's too. I just upgraded my stock stereo, and that got me iPod, iPhone/bluetooth, and HD Radio and I was able to keep the DSP. Custom color control for the display, so it isn't too bad a look. The installers had to use a small adapter to keep the DSP, but I think it was like a $20 piece. The deck has more controls for EQ than the stock one, but the stock looks cool in the dash.
Speakers are a good call, but I'm not sure about the "drop in" replacement. Most of the info I have seen is you need to have the speaker mod'ed to fit the face plate for the P-car and they can only be very shallow speakers. I think you are left with some Alpines, a Polk Audio or two, and some great Focals that will set you way back on price. Since my C4 supposedly has the Bose speakers ( I haven't opened them up to peek), I decided to save up my $$ and left them in.
Cleanest upgrade solution I have seen is a guy in Britian that takes the speaker faceplates and mounts the Alpines on to them, creating a plug-and-play system where you can just drop the new speakers into place without destroying your stock ones - incase you ever want to go back. Great solution, but it does force you to use the Alpines (I asked if they had any other speaker options - no go).
I can post pictures of the Excelon if it would be of interest, but it's pretty normal looking.
Thanks for everyone's input... really, but for the third time, my original question was about the factory EQ or DSP unit.
How does it connect? Is is just a plug and play item or will I need something else...
If someone has a part number that would be nice also.
Tell us about the rest of your sound system. Do you have door speakers? Do you have the factory 6 channel amplifier? Those will also be needed for the equalizer to work.
I changed the whole system on my '99. I replaced the front amp with a Rockford Fosgate 600W 4 channel amp and wired the door speakers and front dash speakers into the front channel and the backs into the rears.
I made my own sub box for the rear that looks like the Bose box and put an 8" Punch 2ohm woofer and mounted a 450W Rockford Fosgate Sub Amp right on top of the box.

It took a bit of tweeking on how to set the gains on the amp and the crossovers in the head unit for me as a rookie but it sounds amazing. Great highs, deep lows and super loud. The head unit can be set up to match the orange illumination exactly.
Best of all it was all done pretty inexpensively because I did it all myself. The dash and rear speakers are easy as well, there are posts on how to cut the speakers off of the mount and epoxy the new speakers on the mount so they screw right in.
I also found posts on the wiring of the factory front amp so you can identify what color wires go to what speaker. I took my time did it myself and probably saved alot of money.
Remember the facory set up is crossed over at the amp so even if you just change those door speakers with coxials all your going to get out of them is lows. Thats why I decided to start from scratch. It can all be done in a day, I did it in bits a pieces so it took me a few hours here and there over two weeks. You will be amazed how great the sound can be compared to what you have now. My advice DIVE IN.
