If you set aside the money you would pay for these warrantees and instead deposit it in your own account, at the end of you Porsche ownership, whenever that may be, you will likely have more money in the bank than if you actually paid for the warranty.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

im coming up on my second anniversary of 01 c4 ownership and cpo will expire shortly.
i am ready to take it in for the final lookover by the dealer. other than rms, which was actually done within a month of purchase along with a new clutch, anything specific i should be asking them to take a hard look at?
thanks in advance for any input.
There's really not much you can do with the CPO expiring. There are so many different scenarios that they dont' cover that it's not like taking it in for a bumper to bumper warranty where you can nit-pik little things here and there and they'll fix them. The CPO is set up to only cover major items like drive train, engine internals, power steering pump, turbos, and things like that. If something isn't going clunk or tick-tick-tick, or oil or coolant dripping out...that they can isolate and determine that it's a covered part....then what happens is the CPO just runs out and you're on the hook from then on.
When the CPO expires, what is the best option assuming one is keeping the car? I know this has been covered in other posts, but what are the "best" aftermarket warrantees out there, and what do they cost, cover?
Phil,
A lot of guys here have Warranty Direct coverage

and as I recall, most have had good luck with them. How much longer until the TT comes in?
If you set aside the money you would pay for these warrantees and instead deposit it in your own account, at the end of you Porsche ownership, whenever that may be, you will likely have more money in the bank than if you actually paid for the warranty. I'm willing to bet on it. I fact, I
AM
betting on it with my C4S that I've owned for the last 6 years.
With regards to what to look for when the CPO is expiring, short of paying for what would be equivalent to a PPI, there realy isn't much more to do. My CPO, or actually the extended warranty since I owned the car from new, expired last Feb '08. As a courtesy, the dealership did a PPI equivalent for free when I brought it in for regular service in Nov '07. Eveything was ship shape.

Hmmm, sounds like the warranty companies make a profit... do insurance companies know about this too?
I am in a similar situation... My extended warranry is about to expire too and not sure if I should get another one or take my chances. I do not drive much and I feel wasting the money away with another extended warranty. Though when I just got this car, within the first 3 months, I had so many issues covered by this X-warranty (coolant tank crack, control seat module failure, ignition switch broken, pax side mirror reverse tilting switch failure, reprogramming of Auto-lock above 5mph). So lucky I had my X-warranty
. But since then I have been enjoying a trouble-free car (knock on wood). But I plan to take it to Ruff for an detailed inspection (PPI) before the warranty expires in July just to make sure I did not miss anything.
I just came off of my CPO warranty in February. I just made sure I took it into the dealership in December for the 90,000 mile service. During that service a problem with the limited slip clutches in the transmission was finally diagnosed and as a result I got the transmission replaced. I also had a check engine light that lead to the MAF being replaced.
Basically a good service by a good dealership should pick up any fixable problems. I did make them aware that the car was coming off of warranty and asked they look at everything.
Now that I am on my own without warranty, I am only nervous of engine failure, but figure if it happens, an new engine at this point would only make the car more valuable. There is nothing I can buy right now that matches what I have.
You're probably right. Honestly, getting another warrantee in '10 is not high on my priority list. I guess it also depends on how long I plan to keep the car, and whether or not I have problems between now and then. Although my mileage is low, the car is over 4 years old and zero mechanical problems to date - RMS is clean, etc.
If you are the type of person who always wants to have the car under warranty, then I would suggest buying an after market warranty from the dealer. I like the fact that the dealer direct bills the warranty company and you do not have to go through a claims process.
There are a lot of threads on here with a lot of opinions talking about extended warranties.
At the end of the day, it is about your comfort level, peace of mind etc.

Oh, sorry was that over the top?
This is a new thing for me, see Tim normally gives the newbies a hard time, but he hasn't been feeling well the last couple weeks...it's just the winter blues we are all hoping. I dont do this very well, but since it HAS TO BE DONE, I will do it
Ed,
Why were you so nice to the Newbie? I keep telling ya'll to "slap 'em quick and slap 'em hard!"
BTW - thanks for filling in for me!
I do have to eat and sleep sometimes, you know?
just live on the wild side....go without and hope for the best (got my wife pregnant twice) without warranty I mean.
I purchased a warranty and the company was closed by Florida State....have been without any warranty and besides tires and a new battery (knock on wood) the P has been holding up pretty well.
