I'm also contacting my wheel supplier to check availability so we can avoid any drag from that end.

It seems like a nice shop (recommended by Porsche shop Advance Auto) - clean, nice equipment, high caliber cars.

Prestige/Louie seems well recommended so far and is very close to where the car is right now.

One thing I feel I've learned about fancy cars and collisions is you never know what lies beneath since they are all designed to distribute these forces and keep you safe, so I'm really focused on using a major league expert so that frame and suspension damage is accurately assessed up front.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Had a spot of bad luck over the weekend, damage to front passenger fender and leading edge of door, both passenger wheels. Didn't take pics since it was dark and pouring rain. I'm fine, it was a very low speed affair, but I still want the car returned to perfect.
It seems all the local dealers I spoke with farm out their work, so I'm thinking I might as well look at an indie (so long as they will work 100% w/ GEICO and handle the aftermarket wheel order).
The vehicle is sitting in my father's garage since I couldn't tow it to a shop on Sunday and couldn't bring a damaged vehicle back to my garage in Manhattan, and honestly I think I would prefer to use a shop in Rockland County NY or Bergen County NJ (or Westchester, NY) if possible would like to avoid Brooklyn/Queens/Bronx shops.
The vehicle is still under CPO, which makes me want to give it to the shop my servicing dealer (Prestige in Nanuet) farms out to, but really I just want to get the work done by someone who is going to assess possible frame and suspension damage as accurately as possible.
And then time for PCA appraisal and diminished value research, ahhh no fun!
So any recommendations on shops guys? Much appreciated.
The shop that Prestige uses is Premier in Nanuet on Middletown Road, they did a superb job on my Aerokit install and were nice guys to deal with and understand that Porsche owners are NUTS!
The paint match was PERFECT
Thanks for the vote Mark, I'm leaning in this direction. Prestige/Louie seems well recommended so far and is very close to where the car is right now.
Thanks Ed.
Thanks for the sentiments guys! This is further proof that we are the best online Porsche community.
I have a couple of days to make a decision on where to go with it, as I want to spend some time with the adjuster before putting everything in motion and he may not get out there for a couple of days.
It's been 12 years since I had to deal with collision on one of my personal vehicles, but I've been through the process with family and friends several times in the intervening years and feel pretty well equipped to handle the situation. I was pretty angry initially but I know it's just part of driving in this region. All in all, I feel that I was very fortunate, no airbags, no injury at all, my nearly full bottle of water in the cupholder didn't even spill, the police and community were very kind and helpful, and it looks like pretty minor damage aside from the fender.
Again, while the damage doesn't look too bad on the surface, both passenger wheels were struck, and the main impact was forward of the a-pillar including some of the fuel filler door. The leading edge (literally like a centimeter) of the passenger door panel is also creased at a right angle, and the leading edge of the rocker panel is curved inward. The front trunk opens and closes cleanly and the gaps look correct, and the passenger door does open and close cleanly but there is some resistance at the full aperture. I also did notice some steam seemingly coming off the driver's side or center radiator, but it was dark and pouring, so I don't know if that was just rain hitting a hot radiator.
One thing I feel I've learned about fancy cars and collisions is you never know what lies beneath since they are all designed to distribute these forces and keep you safe, so I'm really focused on using a major league expert so that frame and suspension damage is accurately assessed up front. Maybe I'm being a little too ****, but I feel like if I don't it'll be me who gets taken from behind someday in the future.
I'm also contacting my wheel supplier to check availability so we can avoid any drag from that end.
If anyone has any advice on making the process as efficient as possible, I'd appreciate it greatly, since I'd ideally like to take the car down to Miami for the winter (I should be down there starting Jan 15th assuming anarchy doesn't break out before that!). I know these things can take time, but if I can do anything to make it smoother I'd like to.
I've used them for all my warranty work since I shipped the car back to NY, and I think both the parts and service people do a good job there.
Since I plan on continuing to be with them for at least another year until my warranty is up, they (Premier/Louie) are definitely the front runner. I probably will post up a few other names that the PCA and other friends recommend over the next day or two just so you guys can opine. Thanks again!
Sorry to hear.
My 944 is at Cimorilli's in New Windsor (having the frame straightened).
It seems like a nice shop (recommended by Porsche shop Advance Auto) - clean, nice equipment, high caliber cars. I pick up my car on Wednesday, so i can't yet tell you if they've done a nice job.
Sorry to hear of the accident Hans, glad no one was injured. How did the damage happen through all the wax and sealant
It's that time of year. I just had an accident last week in my SUV. Hit black ice, then a guardrail head on at 40 mph, then rolled it onto the passenger side where I slid and spun over a hundred feet across three lanes.
Hans,
u are ABSOLUTELY right about being cautious and going to the best.
I got rear-ended in Sept, and other than a scratch on the bumper I didn't notice anything. I almost didn't take it in. Turns out the frame was tweaked and $8G of damage occurred.
I don't think this process can be streamlined much.
If you need help with a Diminished Value Claim, let me know. I'm about 25% into mine. Gettin ready for a fight!
I was thinking the same thing when I jumped on the board today, they have it out for us!
Thanks buddy
Out of curiosity, do you know what the straightening bill looked like?
I hope you and yours are OK buddy, that sounds like the real deal. Everyone safe and sound?
I was thinking about what happened to your car when I was writing the post this morning Aaron, thanks for the reassurance.
As far as streamlining goes: The wheel supplier did put a set of wheels aside for me, so they won't be the holdup, and I plan on being there for the adjusters estimate, the shops initial estimate, and the supplemental / teardown estimate. I'm pretty decent under a car, but I'm not a 996 expert yet so I will be spending some time reading up on suspension components and fuel filler stuff and where the cross members are in the front and all that so I can be well armed to point out issues. I want it back perfect.
In terms of the possible DV or (shudder) total loss claim, I am thinking I will outsource some of the process. I'm so crunched for time right now I don't think I can give it my all if I have to go it alone. I remember someone recommended autoloss.com (Terry I think it was?), any other opinions recommendations?
Thanks for that Van.
Does anyone know if most of the frame subframe members steel in the 996, or is there a lot of aluminium?
I have been trying to find a dealer who would manage the process directly , and the only one in the area I can find who does this is Town Motors Porsche in Englewood NJ (aside from manhattan motorcars, and I really don't like the idea of using them or their body shop for some reason). They would manage the process and supply the parts, and sub the body work to their "great, the best" body shop. My dad bought a Lincoln from them 15 years ago and still dislikes their in house Lincoln service people, but I would think the Porsche operation is separate.
Anyone have any opinions on Town or any experience with the shop they use (I will re-post with the name of the shop today)
I visited Deman Motorsport last weekend and they specialize customer race prepped Porsche including fixing track wrecks... Rick seems like a good guy.
http://www.demanmotorsport.com/
....he's also here on RL as a sponsor. Rick Deman is his screen name.
That's a good idea, thanks. Rick does get a lot of good reviews from the PCA as a track prep guy, but I wonder if he even does insurance work. I'll call him right now, and I'm going to bounce him off the Metro PCA guys to see what they think of using him for collision.
Rick is a good guy.
I picked up my 944 from Cimorelli's - I'm really happy with their work. The technician is a classic car guy and was really careful, and he took the time to explain all of the before and after measurements.
Just for the frame straightening, the bill was $800. I posted pictures over on the 944 turbo board, if you're interested.
I wasn't able to get him today but I'll definitely speak to him before the end of the day Monday and report back.
That's a decent price all things considered.
I'll jump over and check out the pics.
This is gonna be one heck of a Thanksgiving for a lot of us huh? I'm sorry to hear all the news, but here's to bouncing back!
The economy sucks right now... the sad thing is that the people that caused this mess will almost certainly come out the other side even wealthier than before.
OK Guys, need some opinions
The two shops I've narrowed it down to from word of mouth and dealer are
Premier Collision in Nanuet (Louie) - does 90% of my dealer's body work
Protosport in Pompton Pains NJ (Paul) - some really unequivocal recommendations on 6speed
Anyone in the NNJR PCA or otherwise NNJ want to opine on Protomotive/Protosport for body/frame? Paul there says he does a lot of business with Prestige Porsche (my dealer) and did know the master tech's name there without blinking an eye, and I just spoke to the dealer who said yeah they do a lot of parts business with them and take care of warranty work on a lot of cars his shop works on.
The only reason I'm still at this stage is Premier didn't have lift time for disassembly until the 15th. It's not a big difference in time, Protosport is a little far but I just want someone who is going to be accurate and Proto seems to only do 911s
Let me know what you think and thanks again for all the support!
Hey guys. I connected with Rick DeMan today, seems like a great fit so I decided to go with him for the repair, and he had the car picked up in an enclosed trailer the same day. They seem like a great, responsive team and I look forward to reporting a positive outcome in the coming weeks. Thanks again for all of your advice and suggestions!
I, too, had a bad accident on my C4 Cab about 2 weeks ago.
I ended out sent her to Fairfield Collision Cneter in CT, refered by a fellow enthusiastic in 6speeds.com.
I might have sent her to Deman if I came accross this tread earlier, since their shop is much closer to my home. Anyway, I hope both shops would do great job and return our cars to pristine condition.
Now, just wonder has anyone done diminshed value claim? I found out guite a few co. provided the service when googling "diminished value". Does anyone have experience with any of them?
