Any time I stored cars over the winter I've always used a few dryers sheets.

I have always used moth ***** in the storage area to keep mice away, sheets smell like a better idea.

Suggestion
holes in sheet rock in garage -- gaps even around pipes that run from inside wall to water heater or gas pipe that runs from inside wall to heater -- stuff some steel wool on those holes or fill the gaps too.

I also set couple of sticky-pads mouse-traps on both sides of the garage door sides that have tight gaps but enough for small mices to get in during cold winter time.

The first option that comes to mind, if you're going to leave again for 2 weeks or more, would be to pull your batt, bring it inside, and set a trickle charger on it there.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I found signs of a mouse who decided to use a clean t-shirt rag in my trunk as his winter home today.
It is unbelieveable that there are holes in our car which allow a mouse to get in.
My car has never been in an accident so ....
I cleaned out my trunk and set two mouse traps in there. Let the hunting begin. I just hope it does not make a mess....

It's the Porsche "murine storage" option - $875. I didn't order it with my car, so I should have no problems over the winter. Only problems I saw last year (other than the leaking battery) were a large and happy population of stinkbugs living in the garage where I store it. But, no signs of any mouse droppings. They wouldn't dare ....
Phil,
Mice like warm areas.... last year your car was cold, be careful driving this year and getting it warmed up as that might be an invitation....
hehehe, that will slow him down Wayne
I can see the wheels turning and hear the Therapist's phone ringing now
It was cold because it's damned cold here today.
No mouse would be happy out there right now. I'd want to be hiding also... that reminds me I'd better go and take the batter charger off of my car and close the trunk.
Ferdinand,
I have no idea how it got there. My car is in an indoor public parking garage so trickle charger is not an option. Its a concern for me now.
Tim,
I am leaving the country again this week and return end of January. I have made a note in my Outlook task list to check them traps.
I hope the little bugger likes apple pieces.
Wayne,
Invest in a few mouse traps and put them in your garage. It is a few dollars and just cannot hurt. Can you imagine if the mouse starts to chew wiring? I would just send the car to Mfletch(Mark) and beg him to rewire it.
They can squeeze in some incredibly tight spaces. The gap between the hood and battery compartment would probably be enough.

This is a well known trick RV and boat owners use because those vehicles sit for extended periods of time and are prone to critters calling them home
Personally I had a neighbor tear down and old shed and the resident promptly moved into my truck in my garage. I killed the son of a gun, but not before it pissed all over the engine compartment and built a nest in the windshield motor area. Smelled like hell !!
I put dryer sheets all over the garage now because I am not interested in finding an alternative name for P-car
Charge them enough rent to pay for a new battery. BTW, mice
love
peanut butter. If you put some on the apple slices, I may come and live in your Porsche this winter. Oh yeah, and leave the sheets in the trunk - I might be cold.
I also set couple of sticky-pads mouse-traps on both sides of the garage door sides that have tight gaps but enough for small mices to get in during cold winter time. Time to time one does get trapped on those sticky-pads, so those do work without making a mess. I don't like to do this but I do need to protect my baby... My Bro in law had mices destroy the whole ignition wiring harness on his brand-new BMW 750Li that requires dealer to special order new harness from Germany for a lot of money, crazy.
Don't know if it's the smell or what but it does keep them away. Put a few in the trunk, a few in the passenger area, even in the engine bay if you want. I use them in cars, boxes in the garage, anything.
Chao, I would gladly help you, if little rodents snacked on your Porsche wiring. I am taking delivery of my next project car in a few days. I will post pictures of it here, when I have it in my garage. Rodents have been living inside it for about 25 years. It should be fun.
Where's a kitty when you need one?

And the dryer sheets make nice little blankets to help keep the mice warm!
BTW - I have never smelled moth *****, I couldn't get my head between its legs!
Cheap insurance,....

Like I said, Cheap Insurance even if it doesnt work, the smell is not a negative and it surely wont hurt anything, but it will work
Update:
Checked the traps and found hairs. Only one of the traps actually worked. The other one had the bait taken from it. Replaced bait with peanut butter and the hunt continues.
I think peanut butter is a better bait than apple slices because it is messy and cannot take all of it away with one trip. The mouse needs to keep going back to clean it all off. Sooner or later, I am going to get it. Hopefully before I leave the country in three days....
Ferris wheel mouse trap.
Best set up ever for storage places. I use them in my shop and barns. work like a charm!
Five gallon plastic pail. String a cofffee can length wise with coat hanger wire then string through the lip of the pail such that the coffee can rotates on the wire in the opening of the pail. Paint peanut butter on coffee can such that can is balanced and rolls freely around the wire axis. Pour a gallon of anti freeze mix into the bottom of the pail. Place pail on the floor against a wall in storage location, with wooden ramps leading from the floor up to the lip of the pail.
VIOLA, dead, pickled (no smell) mouse trap you do not have to empty.
Works like a charm. I have caught over a dozen in my two barns since I set it in early November. Try it!
out in your car. Rodent damage quite common in winter to vehicles left parked for long periods of time. Inside or outside. Shelter is shelter and the drier the better.
Mouse probably got in my gnawing hole in something. It might be able to squeeze through the air vent flaps that vent cabin air to the outside and from the cabin then it squeezed or gnawed its way into trunk.
Check traps frequently. If one catches a mouse the stink will permeate the car.
Not likely though trap will work. With trap on carpet the animal can get enough grip its reaction time will allow it to jump out of way before trap catches it.
To catch fast reacting mice and even roof rats -- which became a problem in an older place I lived for a while when lots of development going on and old sheds, barns, and woodpiles being cleaned up -- put traps on top of dryer top in garage.
Slick painted surface didn't provide any grip. Caught one animal one night and the other the next night. No more problems.
Sincerely,
Macster.
10 mouse traps in my garage- I refresh peanut butter in traps every few weeks. The worse is when they eat through wire harnesses- I put socks over exhaust pipes also
They say in the link that "Fresh Cab" was tested and repells rodents,
but does it mean that regular dryer sheets work also?
Is this another internet myth?
I am parked in a public parking garage. I have to move the car to another parking garage in a few days anyway.
Hopefully with cleaning out the trunk and a different location, his relatives and friends will find another place to spend their winter.
WOW you really caught one in your car, hope they did not damage anything to your car... Those are the exact same size mices that I frequently catched on my sticky pads in my garage at the thin side-gaps on both sides of the garage door.
That is my concern now. What did he chew through to get in? I have heard that mice can squeeze through holes the size of a pencil but it still worries me.
Actually, it reminds me of the Faulty Towers episode with the rat.

Painful, but very funny.
I loved that show.
I would say that british humor is more sophisticated than american humor and comes in more varieties.
I still love to watch a British comedy, but they're hard to find, as they typically don't do well when shown on American tv... they only do well once they've been dumbed down and translated into an American accent.... pretty sad.

Yep, I've seen that work real good too. For all you victor trap guys, take a bit of string, and tie it around the 'catch' part of the trap and leave about 3/4" exposed and put peanut butter onit. This will greatly reduce the chance of finding only hair instead of the whole mouse.
I think it's a hole the size of a dime. Especially for one that size. I wouldn't be too worried about anything being chewed. Do a quick check around the battery, amp, anything else in the trunk area. Unless it's air tight, they can still get in without chewing. And I don't think there's any vehicles that are air tight
No wonder you caught him with that dollar bill in the trap. Even the mouse world is in a recession.
