Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got a new 2004 C2 last month and noticed blemishes in paint. It had an aftermarket paint protector applied. Took it in after a couple of weeks and they tried to buff out. Didn't work. Took it in yesterday and they said the only thing they could do was repaint the whole car. It is under warranty but how much will this reduce the value of a new car? Will it be under CARFAX? They will have to have the car for two weeks! What should I do? Thanks for you input.

POST 2Original post

Photograph it well, and get it documented by the dealer....it's still going to hurt you at resale, but not as much if you do the above....most people are worried that it was hit....... You might REALLY try playing hardball, and ask for a new car. I got one once from Mercedes, for a different reason..... I feel your pain.....good luck!!!!

POST 3Original post

If it's painted by a really good shop, the paint will be as good or better than factory.

POST 4Original post

Your dealer probably knows of or has a paint shop that does Porsche warranty work - have it painted there.

POST 5Original post

The factory paint is not that great. If it is a good paint shop it WILL be better than factory.

POST 6Original post

but it will not be as strong as factory paint.

POST 8Original post

Strong?? The factory paint is so watered down to meet the Euro air/water pollution guidelines, that is it thin and chips easily. If you get the car re-painted here in the states the EPA is much more forgiving with the enviorment. Plus it will be thicker too.

POST 9Original post

Evan, u know me about my cars. any paint after factory will be softer & easily to get chipped period. i use both top notch bodyshop in WLA for all the customers' car & they admit it. their quality might be better than factory but no way the paint will be as strong. munro86, have u ever repaint a front bumper on the car? if u do u'll know what i mean.

POST 10Original post

btw, ''strong'' meaning chip resistance. it doesn't mean factory paint will not get chipped but sure it holds up alot better. on the other hand, most of the time we're driving a fresh painted car from bodyshop with a paint is not properly cured. thicker paint doesn't mean it's stronger. the right formula is the key. btw, all bodyshop sucks because they always leave ur windows in the shop regardless they're working on ur car or not. it gets so messy inside they just don't care...

POST 11Original post

I know what you mean, I'm having my bumper cover replaced very soon and am worried about the end result. I'm thinking of getting the clear bra as soon as it's safe to do so. POST 12Original post

[QUOTE=washington dc porsche]I know what you mean, I'm having my bumper cover replaced very soon and am worried about the end result. I'm thinking of getting the clear bra as soon as it's safe to do so. I had lots of chips on my bumper and hood. I got it painted and it started chipping right away. I just got the clear bra put on the bumper and so far so good. I do notice some chips on the hood already. BTW, make sure the body shop is good, because the application of the clear bra can lift the paint.

POST 13Original post

Yeah, when I get this work done I'm going to let the sun bake the car for while then apply the clear bra. Oh, why would I take the clear bra off, btw? I recall having my old car bumper cover painted a few years ago and within a month it started to flake more the "Goldmember's" skin from the Austin Powers movie. I refuse to go through that again. [QUOTE=neil.schneider]

POST 14Original post

My front nose chips very easily, along with the rest of the body,so I don't really agree with the 'strong' notion.

POST 15Original post

The only way to avoid chips on the car is to not drive it on the freeway. The faster the car goes, the more chips it will accumulate......especially on U.S. freeways. Having the bodyshop bake the paint a little longer will certainly help w/ the cure time, but just driving the vehicle from the bodyshop back home can easily accumulate a few chips here and there since the paint is still soft.

POST 16Original post

You'll reduce the value of the car by a couple of thousand at least if you trade it in. In private sale, most people won't be able to tell unless they have it professionally inspected. I had my car repainted and it looked a million times better than the factory paint, but it still reduced its value.

POST 17Original post

To the original thread poster: What kind of blemish is in the paint? Why need to repaint the whole car? If it's a bumper only, your lost of resell should be 1-2k at most. If whole car, you are looking at $5-7k loss in value. Did you agree to buy the car in such condition? A good detailer can do wonders while body shop just don't know how to fix it except respray. I'd get a good detailer to look at it before respray.

POST 18Original post

Who tried to buff it out at your Dealer? If it was just their detailing guys, I would take my car to guys who specialize in this type of repair. In MD the franchise is called "Colors on Parade" and they have specialists who visit many Dealerships to do touch-up work on a weekly basis. Ask your Dealer if they have some specialist that they use and if they do, I'm certain that they will be able to remove the blemishes. This is assuming that you don't have many blemishes. If the blemishes are all over your car, I'd get it repainted.

I'd get a good detailer to look at it before respray." The C2 was a car that had been at the dealer lot. I was looking at getting another Boxster when I saw it. It was an '04 that had not yet been sold and it had the options I was interested in for the Boxster. I decided on a whim to test drive it and I was blown away!! The car was not detailed but I made them an offer and bought the car. I live 100 miles away from the dealer and picked it up several days later. I was so excited I didn't look closely at the paint (just wanted to drive!!!). Got home and my wife said to there was something wrong with the paint. Fifty or so splotches all over the car. I had some kind of protective coating applied to protect the car and I thing they did that prior to getting the car paint totally ready. I called the dealer and dropped it off. Picked it up after hours and the spots were still there. Took it back and they looked at it again and said the only thing that could be done was to paint the car (4K but insured). I think that I will try a private detailer or call Porsche customer service.
