But I think if you answer the "personal" questions and get the "repair" questions answered, that may help you decide the best option for you.
Leading evidence: 'Repair " questions answered' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair " questions answered' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Porsche had treated transmissions a lot like the engine, if it went bad, replace the entire thing.

When I read through a lot of threads about the transmission problems I saw recommendations for changing the transmission oil to Redline, I did it and I'm happy, since I have done this the 2nd gear popped out 2 times in 3 months (and that was my fault because I let the clutch go to early).

He told me that I was at least the 10th person with problems that he thinks are due to the fact that Porsche does not recommend a transmission fluid change until the 90, 000 mile service.....went to my dealer, had them drain the fluid, they found shavings in it and would take $9,500 for a transmission replacement....if the other expert is right, couldn't that have been avoided by an earlier fluid change?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 2000 996 C2 convertible with 81, 000 miles, always properly serviced, started producing grinding noises in its engine. An independent porsche mechanic whom I consulted suggested (after driving the car for a couple of minutes around the block)that maybe the bearings are worn out. If so, shouldn't Porsche foot the bill (or at least split the costs with me?).
How frequent are problems like mine? Anybody else who experienced something similar?
Eat whaaaat?? ans?
OK, I wonder what is going on with this guy's transmission.
How about going to a mechanic, and then come back and tell us what
actually happened?
OK, it was late. It was supposed to be "and" but now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind eating Ann's .........! The problem with that plan is that my wife's name is not Ann!
Uhmm.... Michael...... look toward the bottom of page 1 in this (the 996 Forum).
That is where you will find your first "kaputt" thread.
So not the question is.... are both of them in the wrong forum or the right forum?
J/k!
Guess the holiday craze got to me. I apologize to all who had to read my post a second if not third time....you can tell I am new to this.
Now back to my problem with either the transmission or, like somebody suggested: the gear box on my manual C2 from 2000. The local Porsche dealer(Palo Alto,CA) is willing to work with me in order to keep me as a customer. The independent who was recommended to me, listened to the "sliding" noises while driving the car around the block for 5 minutes, and it was his take that it might be the transmission. He could replace the whole thing for around $3 500 to $5 000 if my memory serves me well...which way to go now? With the dealer who is willing to offer something (don't know how much that will be, I let my wife deal with them, she is gutsy and doesn't take "No!" for an answer ...she got on Porsche North America and is still in negotiations with them!!) or with the independent (who will take a while since he is alone after his sidekick injured himself in a motorcycle accident)?
Hope I don't get on everybody's nerves with my posts; if so, just tell me to shut up.
Happy New Year to all!
Michael,
No problem about the double post. I can see how that could have happened.
This is a tough one to give specific advice on. You stated the the dealer said it would be $9,500 for a new transmission and the Indy quoted you $3,500 to $5,000. The dealer "is willing to work with" you to help keep the costs down, but you don't know how much they will "help."
A little over a year ago, Porsche began supplying parts for the transmissions, which, if I recall correctly, had not been available. Porsche had treated transmissions a lot like the engine, if it went bad, replace the entire thing. Here are a few general questions you need to ask and thing about
:
Does the dealer and someone in house that could replace only the worn parts?
How about the Indy, can he replace only the worn parts?
If they replace only the worn parts, what is the warranty period on the tranny?
If they get in there and the whole thing is shot, then what?
How long would they (Porsche/Indy) warranty the tranny?
Now a couple of questions for you:
How long have you had the car?
How long do you plan on keeping the car?
Is it your daily driver or a weekend car?
How big of a burden would $9,500 be on your finances?
Again, this is not really clear cut situation where we can give you a good answer on which path to take. Obviously, $3k to $5k is more palatable than $9.5k. But I think if you answer the "personal" questions and get the "repair" questions answered, that may help you decide the best option for you.
Good luck on the decision and, please, let us know what you decide to do and also let us know what they find once they get inside the tranny.
I also had some problems with my manual transmission (2nd gear when the car was cold), my car has 90' Miles, I had a quote from a local tansmission shop for $2,500 when I bring him the transmission. Vertex in Florida charges around $3,200 for a rebuild transmission ($1,000 core exchange already discounted). When I read through a lot of threads about the transmission problems I saw recommendations for changing the transmission oil to Redline, I did it and I'm happy, since I have done this the 2nd gear popped out 2 times in 3 months (and that was my fault because I let the clutch go to early).
My Porsche dealer asked for $1,700 just for getting the transmission out and for taking a closer look.
