I ask as i've just had these components replaced on mine to cure a definite suspension creak, now the car is back i have this completely new steering column noise....how frustrating!!!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This was the first really cold morning here and I noticed that when I was pulling out of the garage the steering wheel made a strange noise when I turned it at slow speed. I thought it went away but when I was parking at work, there it was again. It just started out of the blue. The other strange thing is apparently my rear defroster no longer works. The light comes on but it does nothing. Any ideas on either of these?
Thanks
Patrick

My steering wheel started squeaking at about 30K miles during low speed turns. Sounded like a plastic piece binding slightly. It's just normal wear and tear.
I have the same problem. When I turn my wheel left or right I get a strange creaking sound. I still havent figured out what is causing it so any suggestions are welcome. My garage queen only has 10,000 miles on her.

If your noise is a groaning noise that only happens when the car is cold, then try spraying a little belt dressing on the polyrib drive belt on the engine. The belt noise sets up a harmonic that makes it feel like it is coming through the steering column
If it is a creaking noise, then it is the steering column spring.
It sounds like my problem is most likely the steering column spring. I'm out of warranty, does anyone have any ideas on how to change or fix this. Also just in case I should spray the belt, can you tell me where the belt is? Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to porsches.
The belt is on the engine which is in the back of the car. You can locate the engine by opening the trunk looking cover at the rear of the car. Inside you will find a mechanical looking device which is the engine. On the exposed area of this device is the belt which is the narrow black band that runs around some round looking things called pulleys. Lubricating the belt is done with the engine turned on. Holding the spray can nozzle pointed toward the belt, spray on the belt dressing liquid on both sides of the belt. Be careful because the belt is moving, and if your fingers or other bodily appendages become lodged between the belt and these pulleys, they may become separated from your body.
Good luck.
Very funny,
I said I was new to porsches not new to the 21 century. Due to your very informative explanation I now know that the polyrib belt is simply the main drive belt. I will give it a shot of lube and watch out for my fingers, I would like to keep all 7 I have left.
Now on to the real problem like sandman asked, whats the deal with this spring?
BTW any ideas on my rear defroster problem, fuse, connection???
.....my 996 has developed this same noise. Did you replace the spring, if so was it easy?
Does anyone know if this could have been caused by having top strut mounts and bottom suspension arms replaced. Could it have been disturbed during the process? I ask as i've just had these components replaced on mine to cure a definite suspension creak, now the car is back i have this completely new steering column noise....how frustrating!!!
