I checked the engine electronics fuse and even replaced it...nothing.

I disconnected both terminals, cleaned thoroughly, checked every fuse, reconnected...nothing.

I even disconnected the negative cable again, reconnected it, checked the positive and am charging the battery, although I'm sure that's not it...

Not knowing which specific fuse I ought to check, I've checked virtually all of them.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was changing my plugs on my 99 996. When I got done, it was running rough and the check engine light was on. The problem wa that I didn't connect one of the boots completely. Once I did that, it ran fine BUT the ck engine light was still on. I left the key in the ignition and took off the negative cable hoping to reset the check engine light. Now all the electricals work, but the car won't start! It turned over the 1st time I cranked it but now it just clicks!
I could have sworn when I did my steering wheel and disconnected the negative cable, I left the key in the ignition to make sure all stayed coded.
What have I done and how do I fix??
Loren
All the electricals work. Windows, radio, etc. I got out and locked/unlocked with the key and all works fine. When I try to start it, it does nothing, just like I hadn't depressed the clutch or something. I thought I was supposed to leave the key in when I disconnected the battery. I thought I remembered that from the DYI on repairing the horn?
I dunno...I just know it won't do anything.
Which fuse should I check?
OK. I checked the engine electronics fuse and even replaced it...nothing. I even disconnected the negative cable again, reconnected it, checked the positive and am charging the battery, although I'm sure that's not it...
NOTHING
I just trun the key and absolutely nothing happens. I checked the following fuses:
fuel pump
ignition
Terminal 86s
memory control
psm
everything else on the car works fine.
Not knowing which specific fuse I ought to check, I've checked virtually all of them.
Any chance I've tripped the security system? I can lock/unlock, do everything with the remote key I did before.
I could really use some help.
Sounds like the battery drained. The electrics on the 996 are tricky. What seems like enough power to run windows, is not enough to turn over the motor. Try to jump it, then report back.

Since you caused a CEL to come on, and all this then happened....try reseting the ECU one last time. Unplug the battery completely (both terminals.) Let it sit for 30min or so. Come back, reconnect and see what happens.
If still nothing...Could be a shorted starter. Any scent of ozone or electrical burning smells?
C.
It's making the same sound it does if I try starting it without depressing the clutch or w/o shutting the door.
When I disconnected the battery I accidently touched the terminal cleaner to the negative and it sparked. Could that heve done anything? I would think the worst is to blow a fuse. I just don't know which fuse it could have been that I haven't checked...
My bet is you didn't get a good connection to the battery when you reattached the cable. And BTW, disconnecting one of the terminals (negative for safety reasons) is adequate. Disconnecting both of them is simply a waste of time.
OK. I disconnected both terminals, cleaned thoroughly, checked every fuse, reconnected...nothing. I just don't understand it. When I turn the key, I just here a slight whirring noise, I guess a fan. But it does absolutely nothing. It was running fine b4 I disconnected the battery w/the key in it.
When I tried to jump it, it did the same thing. Like I've been locked out of the ignition or something. But why would the remote unlock everything, activate security system, everything but start the car???
At this point we are all guessing trying to help. When Mine had these symptoms it turns out the theft control unit (996-618-262-03) was bad and had to be replaced...it took some time to figure this out as all of the electronics worked as well.
When you guys push your remote, is the emmitted light red? I've never noticed before so I don't know if that's the color it emmits or not.
I'm thinking it has to be some security issue, either it's locked me out for some reason or it's gone bad. It just seems very coincidal to happen when I disconnected the battery w/the key in. Maybe I'm making too much of that.
Oh well, try to save a few $$ changing my plugs and now it will probably cost hundreds to get this fixed...
This was my next guess. The symptoms are very similar to the OE alarm system faults on the 944 / 968's. Could very well be the cause.
Sorry I can't be of much more help.

I guess I was hoping against hope there was combination I wasn't aware of that could reset it. I may leave the battery off overnight just to make sure.
Would that hurt anything? I've heard of radios having to be reprogrammed, but that hasn't happened to me.
Thanks! Maybe I'll just leave the battery connected then. No using causing 2 problems. Just curious, why is it when I disconnect for 30 minutes the radio works OK? It's an Alpine system, I wonder if it's AM? I bought the car used and not totally familiar w/how it came optioned.
Well. I just sat on the couch studying this thing...it just made no sense. So, I went out and re-traced my entire day. THEN I remembered having to loosen the engine ground to get to the front passanger side plug. I didn't remove it, just loosened it. So... I went out and tightened it up a off she went!!
For as bad a feeling it is went it's broke, it's that much and more when I figure out how to fix it. And believe me (as I'm sure you now can), I'm no mechanic.
Thanks for the moral support...
Nice fix Pat. It can be so frustrating at times to do work on your car and then create a problem like yours, but it feels so good when a solution is found, and you did it.Nice job.
