I was at Summit Point this weekend, and after running my 2002 996 pretty hard (wow that track is fun!), shutting it off and restarting it later, I would get huge clouds of burning oil smoke the next time I started the car up.

I heard rumors back in March that "Shenandoah is just about finished and test drivers are running parts of the track".

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was at Summit Point this weekend, and after running my 2002 996 pretty hard (wow that track is fun!), shutting it off and restarting it later, I would get huge clouds of burning oil smoke the next time I started the car up. Is this a known situation or is something wrong? It seems like it might not happen if I let the car idle for 10 minutes or so after I come off the track. Not sure if its a valve guide problem, or oil condensing in whatever PCV system this car has?

POST 2Original post

It could be that the oil temp was hotter than normal driving and you had some valve stem seepage. Was the car parked on a level surface when you started it?

POST 3Original post

I had the exact same condition after the exact same circumstances. Not sure of the cause, but it seems fairly common if you search on this board. It seems to correct itself after some normal driving. Anyone sure of the real cause of this??????

POST 4Original post

This is a common circumstance for 996's run hard at the track. Last year at Watkins Glen this start-up smoking was happening to me consistently, and my instructor explained that there is a little oil seepage that happens on 996's driven hard, e.g. at the track, his 996 included, and that it's not something to worry a lot about. I can't tell you what the true root cause is, only that it is not particular to your 996 - evidently, we've all got it. ______________ Goodloe 2001 996 C4

POST 5Original post

Darren, not to worry. As stated, it's apparently a trait of the flat six engine design. Mine does it on and off the track. Roger

POST 6Original post

Darren: is the new track at Summit open yet? I have been driving the old course for 16 years and am looking forward to the new one. Steve

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I heard rumors back in March that "Shenandoah is just about finished and test drivers are running parts of the track". Well, unless they were driving Cayenne's with big knobby tires, I doubt it. Very little of it looks paved, I highly doubt that its going to be open this year. I didn't hear any construction noise. The website conspicuously lost the link for updates on their status.
